UPDATE: A series of threats have been made to local schools, including Carson High School, as well as schools in Douglas, Storey and Lyon counties, officials said Wednesday. Authorities have advised the threats have been investigated and determined to be hoaxes.
The Carson City School District notes a threat was made to Carson High School, which was temporarily placed on hold. The hold has been lifted, according to a news release.
“The Carson City School District is aware of a generic High School threat to exterior school grounds, which was sent to several school districts in Nevada today. The Nevada Threat Assessment Center (NTAC) is investigating. The threat is not considered credible. Out of an abundance of caution, Carson High School was temporarily placed on hold, which has now been lifted.”
Douglas County School District also received a threat. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office released the following information:
The Federal Bureau of Investigation has determined that the reported threats made to several schools in Northern Nevada this morning were a hoax. Investigators are continuing to work to identify the origin of the threats.
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office conducted extensive checks in response to the reported threats and found no suspicious activity. There is no new information at this time.
Storey County School District closed Virginia City High School following a threat to that school. The Storey County Sheriff’s Office advised the following:
On Jan. 21, 2026 at approximately 6:06 a.m. Storey County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to a reported bomb threat at the Virginia City High School. The threat was communicated via email to school officials. No students were present at the high school at this time.
The high school was cleared of all persons and a perimeter was established. Bomb detection K9s and their handlers from neighboring agencies were dispatched to the location. A sweep for explosives was conducted. No threats were detected.
Storey County Sheriff’s Office detectives are investigating the origin of the threat email. This is an ongoing investigation. At this time, there is no threat to the public and the incident has been determined to be unfounded. Out of an abundance of caution, and due to the activity in the area, school was cancelled for high school students for the day.
We will update as any new information becomes available. We would like to thank Sparks Police Department, Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, Capitol Police, and Airport Authority Police for their assistance.
