The Nature Conservancy has named Lori Leonard as the new preserve manager at River Fork Ranch Preserve outside of Genoa.

“I’ve been working for The Nature Conservancy as a Restoration Technician at the McCarran Ranch Preserve on the Truckee River for nearly four years,” explains Leonard. “Now, I’m really looking forward to bringing my conservation skills and background to the beautiful Carson Valley. I’m excited to engage with community members to make the most of this incredible preserve and to build on the success that TNC and partners have had here over nearly two decades.”

The U.S. Forest Service has purchased a conservation easement on Jacks Valley Ranch six miles southwest of Carson City, officials announced Tuesday. The property is between National Forest system lands on the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest’s Carson Ranger District and the Jacks Valley Wildlife Management Area.

RENO — The Board of Regents of the Nevada System of Higher Education at its Nov. 16 meeting in Las Vegas, the sale of a 104-acre parcel at the University of Nevada, Reno’s Main Station Field Laboratory for $18 million, the appraised value of the property.

Much more than a nature preserve, River Fork Ranch Preserve near Genoa is an outdoor classroom, living laboratory, working cattle ranch, recreation destination and more.

CARSON CITY — Did you know that Nevada Day is the largest celebration of statehood in the nation? Nevada Day is more than an extraordinary parade, it is Nevada’s heritage celebration – a gathering of communities to salute our State’s past and embrace its future.

Tardigrades, or more commonly water bears, will be the topic of Marianne Denton’s Oct. 27 lecture, “Teeny-Tiny Tardigrades: The Wondrous World of Water Bears,” at Western Nevada College’s Jack C. Davis Observatory in Carson City.

Due to the botulism outbreak at Carson Lake and the wetlands south of Fallon, the Dayton Valley Wildlife Reststop is taking in dozens of shorebirds and is asking for the public's help in getting the birds through rehabilitation.

FALLON — The Nevada Department of Wildlife is continuing its efforts to monitor cases of botulism within the Truckee Meadows area, and specifically in the Carson Lake Wetlands.

The local chapter of Ducks Unlimited will be holding a dinner event at Dayton Valley Country Club, 101 Palmer Drive in Dayton, on Saturday, Sept. 22 from 5 to 10 p.m.

RENO, NV – At Nevada Field Day on Sept. 8, visitors will be treated to a variety of free activities and giveaways, and even some tasty food samples.

As part of this year’s activities, nationally acclaimed local food advocate Mark Estee will present a cooking demonstration at 10 a.m. Estee has been featured on Food Network’s Diners, Drive-ins and Dives, and in Esquire Magazine.

Less smoke in the air Saturday morning brought out hot air balloons that hovered over Carson City. Wildlife were also active early in the wetlands and retention ponds in East Carson City just off the Interstate 580 freeway.

Nearly 25 years ago, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency and dozens of partners embarked on an unprecedented mission to conserve and restore the Lake Tahoe Basin’s treasured natural resources through the Lake Tahoe Environmental Improvement Program.

Lake Tahoe is one of the clearest lakes in the world, known around the globe for its spectacular scenery. The lake’s water clarity is one of the many attributes that make the Tahoe Basin such an amazing natural resource and a mecca for outdoor recreation.

Did you know that approximately one out of every three bites of food you eat depends on the work of a "pollinator?” Bees, butterflies, moths, beetles, flies, and hummingbirds are keystone pollinator species in Nevada, supporting healthy wildlands, ecosystem diversity, and a nutritious food supply.

RENO — In addition to navigating pristine wild rivers and dirt roads, big-fish wrangler Zeb Hogan of Nat Geo WILD’s “Monster Fish” show also had to navigate a maze of dangerous military zones in order to tell the story of his travel and research in the remote and wild Salween River that runs through China, Thailand and Myanmar.

It’s going to be a chili weekend, and that has nothing to do with the weather. The annual Chili on the Comstock Competition takes over the tiny town of Virginia City, including a saloon crawl Saturday and the hilarious ‘Fun with the Runs’ 5K. Families will have a hard time choosing between the Cops and Kids Open House and Safety Fair at the Sheriff’s Office and the ‘Kids to Parks’ Day activities at Silver Saddle Ranch.
