The statistics are staggering. Thirty percent of the people diagnosed with breast cancer go on to get metastatic breast cancer.

Metastatic beast cancer is an incurable disease. It is when breast cancer has spread beyond the breast, possibly to the lymph nodes or other organs in the body. Around 40,000 people a year in the US die from it. It is the advanced part of breast cancer and it is rarely discussed.

CHS has many opportunities for students to become a part of something bigger than just themselves, not that making a name for oneself is a bad idea or anything, but it is up to the student to step on up, come on in, and check them out. The Carson High School cross country team returned home with several personal record times and personal goals achieved Saturday during the 10th annual Pacific Tiger Cross Country Invitational in Stockton, Calif.

CARSON CITY — Registration is under way for the Nevada’s 2020 Poetry Out Loud competition and high school teachers and students throughout the state are invited to get involved.

The Nevada State Museum, Carson City will open its doors for free to all Museum Day ticketholders this Saturday, Sept. 21 as part of Smithsonian magazine’s 15th annual Museum Day.

Museum Day is a national celebration of boundless curiosity in which participating museums emulate the free admission policy at the Smithsonian Institution’s Washington DC-based museums.

Friday Sept. 13, no bad luck on this day, beginning at 1:18 p.m. was an assembly in the Big Gym during the last class of the day as an introduction to CHS’ Happiest Homecoming on Earth. Leadership students led the assembly with the first activity being the introduction of the Homecoming King and Queen candidates who made their grand entrance onto the floor.

On Thursday morning, a military convoy led by veterans and military enthusiasts stopped at the Nevada Railroad Museum in Carson City after having already driven 150 miles that morning.

Heading into Thursday, Sept. 12, 2019, events around the capital city region include a morning hike at Lake Tahoe, a Healthy Communities meeting in Virginia City, a cross-country convoy of vintage military vehicles that will make a stopover at the Nevada State Railroad Museum, activities at the Carson City Library, book author presentations at the Nevada State Library and Archives and the Brewery Arts Center, food trucks at Mills Park and more. That fated Tuesday and the days immediately following it truly were, for those of us who witnessed the events unfold, altogether the worst of times and the best of times.

On the same day, we watched two jetliners burst into fireballs after striking both towers of the World Trade Center in Manhattan and dozens of heroic first responders run toward danger, putting themselves courageously in harm’s way to rescue people trapped inside.

Carson City is so full of amazing history that sometimes it boggles the mind. As we have always asserted, the true history of Nevada was made right here in Carson City and from time-to-time, we are reminded of our rich heritage.

One of those reminders will be evident once again on Thursday, Sept. 12 to commemorate the Centennial Celebration of the arrival of then Lt. Colonel Dwight D. Eisenhower who joined the convoy to test the shape of America’s roads and military vehicles as part of the first U.S. Army Transcontinental Motor Convoy that started in Washington, D.C. and ended in San Francisco.

CARSON CITY — A convoy of vintage military vehicles, making its way cross country to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first U.S. Army Transcontinental Convoy from Washington, D.C. to San Francisco, will make a pit stop for lunch at the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City on Thursday, Sept. 12.

RENO — As fire hazard has built through the summer, ALERTWildfire, a network of mountaintop cameras that helps fire managers spot and monitor fires over large swaths of land, has been on a frenzied pace to reach its goal of adding 300 cameras to the network in the western U.S. by the end of the year. In the past three years the network has been involved with nearly 1,000 fires.

CARSON CITY — The Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest welcomes Matthew Zumstein as the new District Ranger for the Carson Ranger District. In his new position, Zumstein will provide oversight of the staff and resources needed to manage over 400,000 acres of National Forest System lands in the eastern Sierra region of northeastern Nevada and eastern California.

UPDATE: 6:09 p.m. According to Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong, the root of the incident tonight was yet another telephone scam that has led to a terrible situation.

According to Furlong, no one has been arrested and no robbery took place. A man received a call from Mexico saying his daughter had been kidnapped and was being held for ransom, and the man went to the bank to retrieve funds to rescue his daughter.

However, the call was a scam; one of two that have occurred just today that the Carson City Sheriff's Office has dealt with, said Furlong.

RENO — The U.S. Geological Survey has awarded more than $12.5 million to seven universities and a university-governed non-profit to support operation, improvement and expansion of the ShakeAlert earthquake early warning system for the West Coast of the United States.
