Laura Lau has joined the Nevada Rural Housing Authority in the position of Management Assistant. In her new role, she will be responsible for providing administrative support of the Home at Last programs in the Northern Nevada office.

Lau has spent the past five years as a licensed real estate agent in the Carson City and Dayton areas. A 25-year resident of the area, she has also spent more than 16 years working for Carson City and Douglas County reviewing residential plans for new construction and remodeling projects.

CASA OF Carson City will begin a training for CASA volunteers Wednesday April 16, 6 to 9pm at the CASA office, 1539 E. Fifth St. in parking lot beyond the Juvenile Court.

CASA volunteers are appointed by the court to serve as guardian ad litem for a case of abused or neglected children in a child welfare court case. Being a CASA volunteer requires patience, caring, research, writing, speaking and follow-through.

Here is this week's fishing report for rivers, lakes and streams in Nevada, Northern California and the Sierra. This report is for the week of Jan. 30 through Feb. 4, 2014. The snow is a welcome relief for drought conditions affecting the regional water ways. We hope it continues.

Eight individuals who display strong personal commitment to protecting and restoring Lake Tahoe were recognized Wednesday by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency during the third annual Lake Spirit Awards ceremony at the Agency’s Governing Board meeting in Stateline.

The Foundation for the Betterment of Carson City Parks and Recreation will present Special Recognition Awards for year 2013 recipients in a brief ceremony on Tuesday, Nov. 12, at 4:30 p.m. at the monument at the entrance to the Pony Express Pavilion in Mills Park.

The public is invited to attend this free, outdoor event. The awards will be presented in the following categories:

Volunteer of the Years - Scott Tully, an individual who has an impressive, sustained record of donating his time and expertise for recreation programs.

Hello fellow anglers. I would like to start out by telling you of a friend of mine. I started writing this column in 1992. I had my many sources of information from local law enforcement to departments of fish and game in the two states that I wrote about.

The most influential and most informative was Dave Zellmer from the Alpine County Fish and Game Commission.

The Biggest Little Tennis Association has announced the selection of Diane Baker-Roberts of Carson City as its Tennis Hall of Fame inductee.

For the past 31 years, Diane has volunteered and been an important part of the life of hundreds of youth in the Carson City tennis community by giving her time and efforts with passion and dedication for the betterment of the Northern Nevada/Tahoe Tennis community.

Her accomplishments are many, including volunteering for the Carson City Tennis Club and working for the Carson City Recreation Department as an instructor.

The Carson City Parks and Recreation Department would like to thank the many employees of Carson City’s Home Depot store for their volunteer work project on August 22nd and 23rd. They arrived at 8:00 A.M. both days and their employees donated their own time to doing various park improvements to Korean War Veterans Memorial Park, located at East Fifth Street and Marsh Road.

The State Historic Preservation Office, Nevada Site Stewardship Program, is pleased to announce a Stewardship Workshop to be held at the Churchill County Museum on Sept. 7 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. This workshop is free of charge and is open to all who are interested in volunteering to help protect Nevada’s heritage.

The museum is located at 1050 South Maine Street, Fallon.

“Feds Feed Families” a food drive to benefit the hungry in our community has kicked off again for the summer. In Carson City, federal employees from USDA Rural Development, the Bureau of Reclamation, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Federal Highway Administration, and the U.S. Geological Survey will be volunteering and collecting donated food in front of Grocery Outlet, at 1831 N. Carson, on Aug. 3 and Aug. 10, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. each day. Grocery Outlet owner Dave Cox provides discounts on purchases for food drives.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Rural Housing Authority staff, along with its Board of Commissioners, are mourning the death of Commission member, Tom Cook. Cook died at Carson Tahoe Hospital, while surrounded by loving family, on April 25, 2013.

Through the efforts of hundreds of volunteers, and with the strong support and leadership provided by Let Them Be Kids, Bordewich Bray E.S. in Carson City will build a brand new playground for its Kindergarten area.

A low cost gelding clinic will be held at Snow Livestock & Grain in Fallon, NV on Saturday, Nov 24th and Sunday Nov 25th. Private horse owners in need of this service are invited to participate in this event that is co-hosted by National Equine Resource Network (NERN) and R-VETS.

One of Nevada’s most significant historic treasures is now the nation’s newest historic landmark with action today from the United States Department of the Interior. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar listed the McKeen Motor Car at the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City as a National Historic Landmark.

Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar on Wednesday announced the designation of the Virginia and Truckee Railroad McKeen Motor Car #70 based in Carson City as one of 27 national historic landmarks.
Calling the McKeen Motor Car #70, Virginia & Truckee Railway Motor Car #22, "the best surviving example of the first commercially viable application of internal combustion power in a self-propelled railroad car" the designation possess exceptional value and quality in illustrating or interpreting the heritage of the United States, Salazar said.

Many served in the unpopular Vietnam War - they had to. Those who served were not accorded the respect or hero status of those now serving in the various wars since. It is now time to honor those brave soldiers, sailors, marines and air force veterans who fought so valiantly in a war that to this day causes such controversy.

Join the League to Save Lake Tahoe and the U.S. Forest Service for a weed pull on the evening of June 28th in Rabe Meadows near Stateline, Nevada. Volunteers will be helping to remove invasive weeds that are threatening Tahoe’s native plant species and wildlife habitat. Learn about invasive weeds and how to properly remove them. Learn more about volunteering to becoming a guardian ad litem and speaking up for a child. CASA of Carson City will hold an Information Hour on May 21, 5:30pm, at the CASA of Carson City office, 1539 E. 5th St. Carson City. CASA volunteers are appointed for to speak up for the best interest of children removed from their parents custody due to abuse or neglect. Being a CASA volunteer requires research, communication, patience and caring. It is rewarding and challenging. CASA volunteers make a difference for kids.
