Trash Mob

Many people in Carson City have had an opportunity to enjoy the beautiful pedestrian and bicycle friendly downtown corridor since it officially opened Oct. 28. With its wide sidewalks and bike lanes, downtown Carson City is something we all can be very proud of. Let’s show everyone that we love our new downtown corridor by doing our part and keeping it clean.

Good luck, Carson City. The options for this weekend are endless, but you can’t be everywhere at once. CASI’s annual Pooch Plunge at the Carson Aquatic Center is always a fun time for your furry friends. Red’s Old 395 welcomes back the THiNK PiNK kick-off to breast cancer awareness month. Downtown you’ll find the wine walk, a rummage sale at the Veterans Memorial Hall, and the Fall Vintage Market at Due Sorella. Toast the season at Fandango: Oktoberfest has returned. Keep reading and be prepared to make some hard choices.

The Waterfall Fire of 2004 was one of the worst fires in recent history to devastate the Eastern Sierra foothills near Carson City. After it was all said and done, over 8,700 acres and 18 homes were destroyed. As a part of the recovery process plastic tree protectors were put in place to help the seedlings that were planted.

The kids deserve some fun for surviving their first week back at school, and Carson City delivers. The first annual Northern Nevada Family Fun Day takes over Mills Park with music, a kids zone, activities, food, raffles, and much more. Check out the Bowling Blast Off at Carson Lanes for a Car Show, bowling specials, and fun. Once the sun sets, Washoe Lake State Park offers a basic astronomy lesson and some celestial viewing. You may consider Muscle Powered a hiking and biking organization, and you wouldn't be wrong. But Muscle Powered's motto is "Walk, Bike, Build," and it is the "Build" part of the motto that is sometimes overlooked. With the official opening of the Ash to Kings Trail last season, the building aspect of Muscle Powered's motto was highlighted.

The Trash Mob has been going strong for more than a year now. Through the efforts of volunteers, and their partners at the Carson City Parks, Recreation, and Open Space Department, Muscle Powered has removed thousands of pounds of garbage from local trails and walkways. With an eye towards improving the overall community and environment in the Carson City area, the Trash Mob is holding a very special and limited event this month.

Last weekend the cyclists ruled our city, but now the hot-rodders are king of the road. The Rockabilly Riot is jam-packed with activities all over town: the races and booths at Mills Park; a street dance at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar; a tattoo show in the Community Center; a free concert at Gold Dust West; and Burlesque at the Nugget. Don’t think that’s all our valley has to offer, though, keep reading for all this weekend’s fun.

SATURDAY:

During the Comstock Lode stamp mills dotted the landscape along the Carson River east of Carson City. Ore from nearby mines were brought to the stamp mills to be processed and have the gold and silver removed from the rock before it was sent off to San Francisco.

You can probably take ‘beach day’ off of your agenda. Spring has been briefly usurped by a blustery chill. Grab a coat and hit the town anyway. The early spring farmers market downtown, the Cops and Kids event at the Sheriff’s Department, and the Annual Relay for Life at Mills Park are still a good time. This weekend is jam-packed full of fun, so take a look at the weekend event summary for your options indoors and out.

With the high winds we sometimes experience throughout Carson City, trash ends up blowing around and settling in places where it shouldn’t. The Wellness Mile located at the Carson Tahoe Medical complex has suffered the consequences of this very situation.

After that cold snap earlier this week, it’s time to go enjoy the sunshine. Spend the afternoon cheering on the WNC Wildcats as they take on Salt Lake Community College. You’ll find the softball double-header at Livermore Sports Complex off Edmonds; baseball is played at the Harvey Field at Western Nevada College. Trash Mobs are a grass-roots community effort to keep the walkways and bike paths around Carson City free of littler. For just one hour on the third Saturday of each month, Muscle Powered holds the events at various locations around town. Volunteers, who are supplied with work gloves and trash bags by Muscle Powered staff, remove litter from areas often used by citizens of Carson City for recreational purposes such as walking, jogging, or cycling.

The spring thaw has arrived, and my event list is getting longer. Carson City has some fun stuff happening this weekend, so please take a look. If you haven’t made it to see Wild Horse Children’s Theater’s production of Disney’s The Aristocats, Kids, or the Carson High spring musical, ‘Kiss Me, Kate.’ what are you waiting for? Keep your eyes peeled for Girl Scouts, this is the last weekend of cookie sales.

Volunteers from Muscle Powered often assist with maintaining the area's trails, cutting back encroaching brush, or building sustainable features into a trail in order to prevent erosion.

Got kids? Plenty of fun awaits. Start out at Dunkin Donuts for their Community Celebration complete with face painting and more. Love on a Leash at the Carson City Library will give them a chance to practice their reading skills with a non-judgmental furry friend. Celebrate the Asian New Year with crafts and music at the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada. You use them. Now's your chance to do your part and maintain them. Help keep the walkways and bike paths of Carson City beautiful and free of litter. This Saturday, Feb. 20 from 8-9 am, at Greenbelt Park, just north of Office Depot and PetSmart along the south end of Stewart Street, Muscle Powered will be holding a Trash Mob.

The countdown to Turkey Day has begun, and living in Carson City gives us plenty to be thankful for: Beautiful views, our own deer herd, great shops, yummy restaurants, talented actors, artists, and craftsmen, and wonderful people. Get in the spirit of giving with a new tattoo from Hooligan’s Ink to benefit the Austin House. For something less permanent, drop off a turkey at one of the contenders in the Salvation Army’s Battle of the Bars. Giving your time is valuable, too. The Muscle Powered Trash Mob meets once a month to help keep Carson’s trails clean and litter-free.

UPDATE: The Light after Dark Walk/Run scheduled at Riverview Park in Carson City tonight has been canceled due to the dangerous conditions of the track from the bad weather. Muscle Powered, the local non-profit organization that advocates for cycling and walking, is continuing their monthly clean-up project called Trash Mobs. The Trash Mob meets on the third Saturday of every month for an hour to clean up litter along Carson City's walking and biking paths.

Do you like shopping, Carson City? Check out the Vintage Fair at Du Sorrella downtown. The last Farmers Market of the season is at Third and Curry, so get your fix of fresh fruits, veggies, honey and more before the leaves fall. Wild Horse Children’s Theater is hosting a huge Warehouse and Multi-family sale; if you need a Halloween costume, you won’t want to miss it. The Teixeira Pavilion at Mills Park is where you’ll find the Autumn Earth Spirit Faire with vendors, workshops, and more.

They did it in July and hauled off over 200 pounds of trash in an hour. They did it again in August and removed well over 100 pounds in 60 minutes.

Now September is here and the Mob is at it again...Trash Mob, that is. The non-profit organization, Muscle Powered, has been behind the Trash Mob effort to keep walkways and bike paths free of litter. The group meets on the third Saturday of every month, each time at a different location.

It’s a blast from the past weekend. Get started with some history at the Dangberg Home Historic Ranch with the Naughty Tea Mistresses. A walking tour of our haunted past begins at the corner of Third and Curry with the Downtown Ghost Walk. Celebrate Prohibition-style at the Brewery Arts Center: the annual Speakeasy Swing Dance Party wants to see you in your finest zoot suit or flapper dress. Head back to the Eighties at Living the Good Life; DJ Bobby G is spinning the hits from yesteryear.

Muscle Powered, the local non-profit organization that advocates for a walkable and bikeable Carson City, is hosting a Trash Mob Saturday morning, August 15 along the Lone Mountain trail located north of the cemetery in Carson City.

Trash Mobs are a grassroots effort (based on the popular flash mobs) with the intention of keeping the Carson City walkways and bikeways free of litter.

Designed to make it convenient for people with busy schedules to give back to their community, Trash Mobs take place on the third Saturday of each month from 8-9 a.m.

Volunteers participated in Carson City's first Trash Mob bright and early Saturday morning, setting their sights and trash bags on the south side of College Parkway near the I-580 overpass.

Volunteer Randy Gaa said he noticed the trash along the multi-use path and wanted to do something about it. As a member of Muscle Powered, a community group that advocates bicycling and pedestrian friendly development, he brought up his concerns to Donna Inversin, Muscle Powered's president.

Thunderstorms are on the horizon, so seize the day and enjoy the sunshine while it’s here. Muscle Powered has organized a monthly trash mob to help keep our trails clean, join them at US Bank to help out. The Ghost Walk returns: meet behind the Firkin and Fox for some local haunted history. Teens will enjoy a ‘Night at the Library’ with pizza and games. And as always, the Nevada State Railroad Museum beckons: this week with rides on the Steam Train available.

Saturdays, 9:40 am through summer is the kind of organized bike ride for the family. Meet by the Muscle Powered bike rack in front of the Carson City Aquatic Center at 841 N. Roop St.
Bicycle rides will be moderately paced and distance will be at the discretion of the riders. The goal is to develop skills and endurance over time. Riders must wear helmets and closed toed shoes.

Muscle Powered, the organization for a walkable and bikeable Carson City, is sponsoring a new initiative in the community in order to keep the local walking and biking paths clear of trash. Once a month, the local community will be invited to participate in a “Trash Mob.”

Why: This is the second in our series of quick trash pick up events. This area attracts a lot of walkers and bicyclists, and dogs. For all of you who walk or bike this area please come out for just 1 hour and help us clean up. If you have a pooper scooper please bring it.
We’re asking for only 1 hour of your time, not a lot, but it can make such a difference.
Carson City Parks and Recreation has promised to put up a Mutt Mitt station, so if we can get it cleaned up maybe it’ll stay cleaned up.
