Train Museum

I hope you like live music, Carson City, because tonight you’ve got plenty of it. No matter what your style, there is someone for you. Take the kids to the Nevada State State Train Museum for Lucky Diamond and the Gents of Jive or to the McFadden Plaza for an outdoor concert with Musicole. Leave the kids with a sitter if you’re going to head to Living the Good Life for some outdoor fun with CV-41 or inside the Westside Pour House with reggae group Whiskey Lung. A to Zen has a store-wide scavenger hunt to accompany their weekly open Mic.

This is no sleepy Sunday. Genoa will be a fun place to explore with their monthly Sweet Sippin Sunday stroll and Art in the Park. Jazz and Beyond Music Festival continues with four bands out at the Silver Saddle Ranch in conjunction with a celebration of 20 years of the Quality of Life Initiative. I can understand if your plans for the weekend include sitting half-naked in front of a swamp cooler with an icy beverage. It has been quite roasty these last few days. Let me, however, attempt to lure you out with this weekend’s event list; there is plenty of fun to be found around the valley. Some of your options even include air conditioning and icy beverages.

SATURDAY:

Sunday is the last chance for celebrity sightings at Edgewood Golf Resort in at south shore Lake Tahoe as the American Century Celebrity Championship tournament comes to a close. Learn about the legacy of Douglas County’s Dangberg family from the rancher’s grandson, author Steve Archard. Locals enjoy a special price on the Virginia and Truckee steam train, or the McKeen Motor car at the Nevada Railroad Museum.

SUNDAY:

I really hope I’m not required to choose a favorite event. I would be hard pressed to choose between the Nevada Day Parade and the annual Taste of Downtown. Luckily, I can adore them both, and for much the same reason. They are a celebration of community, of Carson City, of our historic downtown and all that it has to offer. In addition to 'The Taste', the Brewery Arts Center goes country with the Southern Drawl Band on its outdoor stage, and Madam Curry leads another downtown Ghost Walk. Summer nights were made for outdoor concerts. Bring a chair and enjoy All Hat, No Cattle at Dangberg Home Ranch Historical Park. The annual Reno Corvette Club Show and Shine will give you something to drool over. Planes, trains, and bicycles are the theme of this Fathers’ Day weekend. Epic Rides has taken over downtown with booths, bikes, beer, music, and more. The Carson City Airport is hosting their annual Fly-in and Open house, complete with hot air balloon rides. World War II aviation buffs won’t want to miss the Wings of Freedom tour at the Minden Airport. Steampunk meets Steam trains at the Nevada Railroad Museum. The weekend winds down Sunday, but not with a whimper. The Fair has one more day of fun to offer. Take to the track with Carson City BMX at the Livermore Sports Complex. Today we remember those who have fallen while defending our country. The Historic Stewart Cemetery on Snyder will feature a ceremony at 10 a.m. Lone Mountain Cemetery hosts a ceremony at 1 p.m. and the public is invited to help remove the several hundred flags that were placed on the graves of veterans at 4 p.m. Dayton Cemetery holds their service at 9 a.m. Enjoy a free bar-be-que at Evergreen Gene’s. MONDAY: Memorial Day

A new campaign is encouraging residents to see Carson City in a new way — then share it with the rest of the community.

“Ride Carson City is more than just a campaign,” said Kyle Horvath, social media manager for the Carson City Visitors Bureau. “It embodies the Carson City lifestyle. It celebrates a community that is active at all ages.”

Midnight Madness has descended upon the valley, bringing with it a 72 hour softball tournament at Centennial Park. Don’t be surprised to see more cyclists on the road: an unofficial pre-ride for Epic Rides is this weekend. Head to the Nevada State Railroad Museum to see the Glenbrook all steamed up. Details: The Night Sky Star Train pulls out of Ely for a special journey to view the wonders of the galaxy. A telescope viewing guided by the Dark Rangers of Great Basin National Park will put you in touch with those beautiful stars of ours. Much love to the Mothers in our valley, and those that we love like Mothers. Treat that special lady to a day at the Carson Hot Springs. She gets to ride free with a child at the RSVP Spring Carnival. Travel to Virginia City and back on the historic Virginia and Truckee Steam Train. Brunch, bingo, and BMX racing are just a few of the other things that Sunday has to offer.

SUNDAY: Mother’s Day

I am not even going to attempt guessing what weather we have in store. The west side of the Sierras are notoriously unpredictable. You are much better off betting on the Kentucky Derby; and the Firkin and Fox is just the place to cheer on your favorite horse.

Today is a day for leftovers and crazy shopping. If your family is in town, take them down to opening day at the Arlington Square Ice Rink. The Railroad Museum of Northern Nevada has rides on the McKeen Motor Car special for this weekend. Pinkerton Ballet begins its annual run of the Nutcracker at the Bob Boldrick Theater tonight. Get inspired for your own decorations at Candy Cane Lane: Carson Valley Inn’s drive-thru light show. Happy birthday to the Blue Bull; beer and cocktail specials start at noon.

The historic trains of the Nevada State Railroad Museum meet up with an old-fashioned pumpkin patch, artists and crafters that include Carson City Confections and Great Basin Woodcrafts and more this Saturday and Sunday at the Harvest Train Festival in Carson City. Trains run throughout the day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Dog Days of Summer have hit town, so grab your favorite four-legged friend and have fun. CASI is hosting the ‘pooch plunge’ at the Carson Aquatic Center so that your pooches can beat this late September heat. Join the Nevada Humane Society at Lake Tahoe Brewing Company for the first annual ‘Brew-paw.’ Adoptable pets, a raffle, and more await. Don’t miss out on the downtown walk Sunday following coffee and mimosas at Adele’s. The ‘wag-n-walk’ will end up at the Visitor’s Center where you will be rewarded with a special pet tag.

Do you like shopping, Carson City? Check out the Vintage Fair at Du Sorrella downtown. The last Farmers Market of the season is at Third and Curry, so get your fix of fresh fruits, veggies, honey and more before the leaves fall. Wild Horse Children’s Theater is hosting a huge Warehouse and Multi-family sale; if you need a Halloween costume, you won’t want to miss it. The Teixeira Pavilion at Mills Park is where you’ll find the Autumn Earth Spirit Faire with vendors, workshops, and more.

Ready, set, GO! Whether you want to watch camels race, or hot air balloons light up the sky, this is a great weekend in Northern Nevada. If cool cars are more your style, you’ll find Carson SYFL Sunday Funday Show and Shine at Johnny Rockets. The annual Luau, Auction, and BBQ for the Boys and Girls Club hits Mills Park this afternoon in the Teixeira Pavilion. Enjoy all you can eat roasted pork and Mai Tais for a great cause.

It’s root, root, root for the home team as the WNC Wildcats play a double header at Harvey Field.

Happy Labor Day, Carson City! There will be two parades to enjoy today. Head up to Virginia City for their annual Labor Parade, followed by the Battle of C Street as part of the Great Civil War Days. The other parade is comprised of the thousands of people leaving Burning Man; watch out for their dust! Join Keep Tahoe Blue for their annual beach clean-up at Nevada Beach this morning, then head over to Heavenly Village for a car show and huge winter sports equipment sale.

From Carson City to Silver City, Fallon, Virginia City, Sparks and Lake Tahoe, Sunday is filled with activities as we round the corner into the three-day weekend. There's a 5K Remembrance Run in Carson City, a rib cook-off in Sparks, a farm-to-fork festival culinary festival and fireworks at South Lake Tahoe, the Cantaloupe Festival in Fallon, the Comstock Community Rummage Sale in Silver City and the Great Civil War Days Camp at Virginia City.
