Thanksgiving Weekend

Be swept away this Thanksgiving weekend when snowflakes, bonbons and sugarplum fairies come to life! Enjoy this magical performance with professional dancers Erica Chipp-Adams and Oliver Adams who will return to inspire audiences as the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier.

Once the dishes were done from Thanksgiving dinner, shoppers kicked off the shopping weekend immediately and headed to stores and online retailers to take advantage of deals and discounts over the long weekend and Cyber Monday. In the Silver State, the Retail Association of Nevada estimates that more than 1.7 million people spent a total of $638.9 million on gifts, decorations and other merchandise over the five-day period.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the 31st season of the Nutcracker Ballet, a Feast with a Hero fundraiser at Slot World, Small Business Saturday throughout Carson City and Carson Valley, photos with Santa, a Telegraph Square sign dedication, Polar Express train rides at the V&T Railroad and more!

Today is known as "Black Friday" the official launch of the holiday shopping season and Small Business Saturday, where independently owned restaurants, shops, art galleries, merchants and speciality stores urge all to shop and buy locally.

Pinkerton Ballet Theatre presents the 30th anniversary of The Nutcracker Ballet featuring a live orchestra in Carson City this Thanksgiving weekend.

Performances are Friday and Saturday, Nov. 23-24, 2018 at 7 p.m., and a matinee on Sunday, Nov. 25, 2018 at 2 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center, Bob Boldrick Theater.

Some people do all of their holiday shopping on Black Friday. Others do their best to avoid shopping completely and spend the day after Thanksgiving relaxing at home. The tone of Black Friday can be equally mixed with retail businesses large and small.

Once the turkey has been devoured, all thoughts turn toward shopping. Shop Small Saturday helps to throw a spotlight on our local gems, and the great gifts you’ll find. New this year is Museum Store Sunday with both the Nevada State Museum and the Nevada State Railroad Museum participating. Every year, the Veterans' Administration holds a talent contest open to all U.S. Veterans. This year, a bronze medal was won by Carson City veteran David Kotzebue.

Supporters of action on climate change took to public venues and social media throughout Thanksgiving weekend about the need for bold global action at the Paris Climate Talks.

Activists from organizations including the Sierra Club, Peoples Climate Movement, Avaaz and others took part in public Sunday strolls and rallies at two key venues, the Reno-Tahoe International Airport and public sidewalks near Meadowood Mall, as part of global climate actions coordinated by 350.org.

The Polar Express on the historic Virginia & Truckee Railroad has sold out for the fifth consecutive year, with more than 15,000 passengers securing rides to the North Pole.

A wait list sign-up is available online here that could offer a last chance to ride the Polar Express in 2015. Tickets for next year’s holiday train go on sale in August 2016.

This is a local event to raise public awareness and support for the crucial Paris Climate Talks to take place Nov. 30 - Dec. 11. Global climate events will be happening worldwide on Thanksgiving weekend before the talks begin.

Heavenly Mountain Resort and Northstar California Resort will expand terrain for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, officials announced Wednesday.

Heavenly will open Orion on Thursday, an intermediate run accessed off Dipper Express, boosting the open terrain to 2.3 skiable miles. During the holiday weekend, beginning on Thursday, Heavenly will open daily at 8:30 a.m. Heavenly will also provide the tubing hill as additional beginner terrain.

Featuring Erica Chipp of the Smuin Ballet in San Francisco as the Sugar Plum Fairy and Maykel Solas as Cavalier, this 26th year of performances is not to be missed.

There was a run on Christmas trees in the Lake Tahoe Basin over Thanksgiving weekend. The bad news is that all 2,500 permits were snagged and there won't be anymore issued between now and Christmas.

The good news is nearby Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, which has 5,000 permits this season, continues to sell them at a rapid clip, Forest Service officials said.

It’s a proven hot ticket to catch a ride from Carson City to the North Pole. For the third year, The Polar Express train aboard the historic Virginia & Truckee Railroad has sold out. More than 16,000 passengers secured tickets on the Christmas season-flavored, children's story-inspired holiday passenger train.

Even with the addition of 18 more trains representing 6,500 seats over last year’s 10,000-plus capacity, a 66 percent increase, the train’s popularity continues to grow, V&T officials note.

Deputies responded to several calls over Thanksgiving weekend.

Each of our special guest performers brings his own persona to characterize "Mother Gigogne;" an ever-popular comedic character with exaggerated makeup, costume and flamboyant behavior. Mother Gigogne, a role which is traditionally played by a man, is an enormous woman who conceals a whole brood of children beneath her skirts.

Wrap up the long Thanksgiving weekend with a wonderful holiday concert. Bella Voce performs on Sunday November 27th at 4pm at the Brewery Arts Center. Reno's premiere women's vocal ensemble will perform both classic and contemporary holiday music.

Bella Voce, which is Italian for beautiful voice, has been performing for more than 20 years. Known for excellent vocal technique and a beautiful sound, this ensemble has earned a unique place among performing vocal groups in northern Nevada.

CARSON CITY, Nev. — Carson City’s Old West meets the North Pole this holiday season as the Polar Express™ train will take weekend railway runs across the frosty Northern Nevada landscape Thanksgiving through Dec. 23, according to the Carson City Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Carson City during the holidays always springs alive with a festive collection of entertainment, music, and traditional favorites for the whole family.

Winter arrives just in time for Thanksgiving as the Arlington Square Ice Skating Rink opens for the season with daily skate sessions from Nov. 24 - Jan. 22. Group rates and multi-use punch cards provide savings to ice enthusiasts.

The Carson City Pop Warner Jr. Midget Team recently won the 2010 Snow Bowl and are going on to regionals in Santa Clara, CA Thanksgiving Weekend and then possible on to the national level. The team is currently trying to raise fund to be able to travel to compete at the higher levels. There will be a fundraiser Monday, November 22nd at the Dairy Queen on Highway 50 East in Carson from 6 pm-9pm. Also monetary donations can be made.
