Taxes

Gaming, Unions and Politicians vs. Voters, Taxpayers and Business

The defeat of efforts to repeal the commerce tax shows that Nevada’s political establishment – controlled by Big Gaming and Big Unions – owns not only many officeholders of both political parties but nearly all of state and local government.

Many large corporations and industries in recent decades have decided to join – not fight – the destructive liberalism and predatory agendas of the bi-partisan establishment and the selfish union and other special interests that jointly dominate US politics.

Candidates for Carson City Mayor and State Assembly District 40 addressed a nearly full house of voters at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall Wednesday night during a candidate forum sponsored by the Carson City Chamber of Commerce.

The candidates participated in a structured debate moderated by Nevada Appeal Editor Adam Trumble.

As a group, they were asked questions on specific topics and each given two minutes to provide a response.

Column: Helping parents with their finances

It is difficult to ask for help. Sometimes parents need to ask their children for assistance in handling financial matters. One of the most important things is for the parents to do is the power of attorney for financial matters.

Deep Thoughts, Cheap Shots and Bonbons

The Nevada Appeal had a letter-to-the-editor (dated May 1, 2016) stating:
The Downtown Project is more than aesthetics and declared: “Seventy percent of the total expenditures of the downtown project, currently underway, are for vital infrastructure improvements that are failing and run right down the middle of Carson Street under the medians.”
Here are the most up-to-date facts on funding amounts presently available for this project.

Sandoval Errs: Commerce Tax Repeal Will Not Cause Budget Cuts

Event Date:
May 11, 2016 - 8:15am

Gov. Brian Sandoval and his allies don’t think voters should have a say on the commerce tax they snuck through in the closing hours of last year’s legislature.
They're entitled to their views. However, they’ve been wildly misrepresenting key facts about the matter and about the actions and words of Ron, who is leading the effort to repeal the tax. Below, we set them and the record straight.

John Bullis column: Treasury is working to reduce tax evasion

The Treasury Department recently told of the efforts to curtail tax evasion. Some proposed regulations would use the recent release of the “Panama Papers” to audit the high-profile individuals and overseas tax havens largely used to hide cash and avoid taxes.

Carson City Republican Party Terminates Membership of Assemblyman PK O'Neill

Tuesday the Executive Board voted to remove Assemblyman PK O'Neill from the Carson City Republican Party. There has been much press and he has a very good writer who accentuates his few highly selective non-controversial votes while in the legislature and ignores the bulk of his decisions. Obviously our action is not due to his non-challenging votes but rather his many dubious ones. He does not acknowledge his campaign promises. He does not discuss attending a CCRP meeting at which he asked for our direction on this tax issue.

Carson City makes gains but still searches for a sense of place

“Every American city, whether it prides itself on its public sculptures or deep-dish pizza, on hot-air balloons or woolen jackets, on abundant trout streams or Greek architecture, needs to develop that identity, or if it has been allowed to escape, remember what it once was.”

That single sentence written by Robert E. Price, author of “The Bakersfield Sound” and award-winning Executive Editor of the newspaper Bakersfield Californian, struck a chord with me, for as we go forth with our “reimagining,” we still don’t have a clear vision/identity of who we were or who we are today.

John Bullis Column: Establishing Simplified Employee Pensions

Suppose you (or a someone you know) has business profits in 2015 but would like to save income taxes by doing a retirement plan contribution. However, they did not get around to setting up a standard Profit Sharing or Pension Plan before Dec. 31, 2015.

Column: Extension of time when filing federal income tax

Suppose you just don’t have your 2015 Individual Income Tax Return ready to file by Monday, April 18, 2016. Maybe you have not received the Schedule K-1 from a partnership of S corporation or a trust or estate. Maybe you just have not found time to get the return prepared.

Easter 2016: The Butchery of Carson Street

I should not have done it, but old habits, and common sense, die hard. Carson Street is the main drag through town, always was, always will be, for going between the north and south sides of town. Just look on the map. There are no through-street alternatives that run the length of town, from College Parkway to Clearview Drive; only fragments, most of which are residential.

Al Kramer files for Assembly District 40

The following was submitted by Al Kramer, who filed for Nevada Assembly District 40:

We cannot tax our way to prosperity.
Nevada needs to attract employers with good jobs. The State's business environment needs to be stable with future changes foreseeable.

That means they need to know that lawmakers will not raise taxes on them as soon as they begin to make a profit. The Commerce Tax passed during the last session moves the State in the wrong direction. If we want our children and grand children to live in the area, there must be jobs. We can't get attract the employers we need if we keep increasing taxes.

A Rendezvous with Destiny: Why We Do Politics

Opinion: 'All Pain No Gain' Federal Overreach

“No pain, no gain!” For years, exercise buffs have encouraged people to hit the gym with this phrase.
Would as many have been eager to get off the couch if the rallying cry had been, “All pain, no gain”?

Each year, the Nevada controller’s financial reports have included an “economic outlook” section, as have reports by many government agencies and business, academic and journalistic entities. Nearly all such assessments are based on business-cycle analyses focused on economic sectors and geographic regions in the short and intermediate terms.

If an employee receives tangible personal property such as skis, tires, clocks, television sets, radios, clothing, etc. and the value is not more than $400, then it can be tax free if it qualifies as an employee achievement award.

That is tax free of income, social security, medicare and unemployment taxes for both the employee and the employer. The award can not be cash, gift certificates, vacations, meals, lodging, tickets to events, stocks, bonds or other securities.
