Lake Tahoe clarity held steady in 2009 for the ninth year in a row, but remains significantly poorer than in previous decades, according to UC Davis scientists who have monitored the lake for more than 40 years.

Carson City, Carson Valley area and Lake Tahoe south shore see June gaming revenue increase

The Carson Valley region, which includes Carson City, and the Stateline casino corridor at South Shore Lake Tahoe were the only two regions in Nevada that saw an increase rather than a decrease in gaming revenue for the month of June, the state's gaming control board reported today.
The casinos in the Carson City and Carson Valley area climbed by 5.1 percent over the fiscal year for June, followed by the Tahoe casinos, which jumped to 13.5 percent.

Storms produce hail and heavy rain throughout South Lake Tahoe

While the Carson City area was spared the brunt of significant rainfall on Sunday, other places such as Lake Tahoe and Virginia City were not. Heavy rain and quarter-size hail pummeled parts of South Lake Tahoe and Emerald Bay on Sunday afternoon as the National Weather Service tracked a large thunderstorm in the area issuing a severe weather warning around 4 p.m. and advising boaters to get off the lake.
   

Road re-opened after V & T derails near Virginia City (UPDATE)

A storm cell that hit the Gold Hill area produced mud slides that may be behind what caused V&T Engine 29 to derail, officials said this morning.

The V&T engine derailed last night at about 6:30 near Gold Hill after a series of heavy rains produced micro-mudslides, many of which may have flowed onto the V&T Railroad tracks.

Flash Flood Watch issued today by National Weather Service for the Carson City region

A flash flood watch has been issued today for the Carson City, Carson Valley, Lake Tahoe and Reno areas, according to the National Weather Service and www.carsonweather.com.

The watch will be from 1 p.m. through this evening. Scattered thunderstorms with very little movement may produce heavy rain today for the Carson City region. According to the Reno-based weather service, the strongest storms may produce rainfall rates of over one inch per hour with a strong potential for flash flooding.

Nugget Project update: a look at the Meridian report

Last week we reported that the governor's office sent a letter to Nugget Project consultant Mark Lewis taking issue with certain parts of the feasibility study for moving three state agencies into the Carson City Center/Nugget Project.

The one big item missing in that story was the Meridian Business Advisors feasibility study itself, which we now have a copy of.

Carson City man admits abusing toddler; faces felony child abuse charge

A 23-year-old Carson City man faces a felony child abuse and a gross domestic battery charge after admitting to abusing a 20-month-old toddler.
David Phillip Gawdun, who lives in the 1700 block of Russell Way, is being held on $43,132 bond in the Carson City Jail after he was arrested on Saturday. In an interview, he has admitted to slapping the girl and other instances of child abuse on the toddler and the girl's 3-year-old brother.

More thunderstorms possible today for Carson City region

The National Weather Service reports that a low pressure system near the California coast could produce thunderstorms again in the Carson City and Tahoe region today similar to those on Saturday and Sunday. Lighting and gusty winds can be expected with the storms if they indeed generate.

Three years and walking, Carson City group remains dedicated to our troops

As we go about our business after work on Fridays, celebrating the end of the week, about 30 people clad in red t-shirts and carrying American flags have gathered for three years running to walk down Carson Street in support of our American troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
I first met Mike McElfish, organizer of the Friday Red Shirt Walk, in September 2008 after he helped coordinate a similar walk in memory of Army Sgt. Timothy Smith of South Lake Tahoe who was killed by an improvised explosive device in Baghdad on April 7, 2008.

Child falls out of raft into Carson River, taken to hospital by Carson City fire and rescue

A two-year-old boy fell out of a raft in the Carson River near Brunswick Canyon tonight and was transported to Carson Tahoe Hospital.
The condition of the boy is unknown. According to emergency dispatch and personnel at the scene, the child was unconscious but was breathing at the time of the rescue and subsequent transport to the hospital.

Lake Tahoe is home to Wa She Shu It Deh Native American Festival July 24-25 at Tallac Site

One of Lake Tahoe’s most notable cultural events will take place at the Valhalla Arts, Music and Theatre Festival the weekend of July 24 and 25 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Wa She Shu It Deh Native American Festival is a rare cultural event for families taking place on the grounds of the Valhalla Grand Hall with a basket weaving competition, native film festival, traditional dance, native artists, performers and much more.

Carson City mom faces felony child abuse charges after ER finds meth in infant's system

A Carson City woman who told authorities she had smoked methamphetamine and then fell asleep next to her infant daughter faces felony child abuse charges after the baby tested positive for the drug.
Charlene Marie Benitez, 22, is being held at the Carson City Jail on $50,000 bond after being arrested early Saturday morning. Charges include felony child endangerment and abuse that caused the infant physical or mental harm. The condition of the infant is unknown at this time.
Subsequent portions of the investigation report appear to be withheld.

Carson City BLM office: Statewide public land fire restrictions begin July 16

Casino game winnings in Carson City and Carson Valley dropped by 1.1 percent in May, while statewide gaming revenues declined by 4.7 percent, according to figures released today by gaming regulators.
