Enjoy the last few days of summer as fall is around the corner. Today is Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2018. Today brings the second and final volunteer training event at the Nevada State Museum, morning and afternoon hikes and walks, a rally at the capital, a fundraiser at Mills Park, plenty of art exhibits and more.

Thursday hike to Clear Creek Trail, sponsored by Muscle Powered

This week's hike has CHANGED to the new Clear Creek Trail. Since Nevada State Parks is closing some of the trails for forest management, the original trail advertised, Tahoe Rim Trail Spooner Summit-North will closed.

The meeting place has not changed. We will still meet at Highway 50 Park and Ride where we will carpool up to Spooner Summit to park in the south parking lot for the Tahoe Rim Trail.

The Clear Creek Trail begins just east of the bathroom and is accessed via the Forest Service Road just east of the bathroom.

National Public Lands Day to be celebrated at Lake Tahoe's Nevada Beach

Spooner Lake portion at Nevada State Park to close this fall to address forest concerns

With dense vegetation spanning over 300 acres, the iconic Spooner Lake portion of Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park is increasingly susceptible to environmental disturbances threatening the health of the Tahoe Basin. State officials from forestry, parks and lands announced Thursday the closure of the Spooner Lake portion of Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park from Sept. 12 to Nov. 16 to address forest health issues.

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. – The Marlette Flume Trail will close from Marlette Dam to Tunnel Creek Road for a landslide repair project on Monday, August 27. The Trail will be closed to through traffic on the following dates (out and back traffic will be allowed):

Muscle Powered hosts Saturday hike to the Tahoe Rim Trail from Spooner Summit to South Camp Peak

Carson City's Muscle Powered group will host a Saturday, August 25 hike to the Tahoe Rim Trail from Spooner Summit to South Camp Peak.

Meet at 7:15 a.m. at the Park and Ride lot on Hwy 50 just west of the intersection at 395 to carpool to the trailhead since parking is limited. Plan on 5-6 hours which will include travel time and breaks. For fit, experienced hikers only! This is a great hike but includes some steady uphill, high elevation, and needed stamina to keep up with the group.

Yeah, it’s hot out there, but it’s the area happenings that are sizzling. The Carson City Fair at Fuji Park offers a plethora of entertainment for all ages including tractor pulls, a carnival, and farm animals. Under the shade of the Mills Park cottonwoods, you’ll have all day to peruse the varied vehicles in the annual Run Whatcha Brung Car Show. The sun will come out tomorrow, but it’s the stars that are coming out tonight for the free Levitt Amp Concert at the Brewery Arts Center.

The Muscle Powered Hikes are always contingent on the weather, so the later trek may be moved to the MAC if the rain shows. Whatever the day brings, you can always grab your boots and head to Carson Lanes for Country/Pop Line Dancing; they’ll even teach you some new moves. If you drive by Fuji Park today, you’ll see quite a bit of activity. The Carson City Fair begins tomorrow, and they are working hard to get everything just right.

Muscle Powered Saturday Hike to Tahoe Rim Trail, North from Spooner Summit

Join us on this Muscle Powered leader-led hike to Tahoe Rim Trail, North from Spooner Summit to the saddle of Snow Valley Peak. This is a beautiful hike with some spectacular views of Lake Tahoe and the surrounding area. It is a 11-mile round-trip hike to Snow Valley Peak saddle on the Tahoe Rim Trail. The hike will be quite an uphill climb going out and downhill coming back. This is a strenuous hike for experienced, fit hikers only. Plan on approximately six hours for the hike. From the trailhead at the Spooner Summit to the saddle is 1800 feet.

Come out and join us for free hikes each week to enjoy Nevada outdoors around Carson City! Meet in the Hwy 50 Park and Ride to carpool to the trailhead.

Bring a friend and/or friendly dogs. All hikes are 2-4 miles with duration of about 90 minutes, sometimes with elevation gains of 500 feet or more. Water and sturdy or athletic shoes are required. Hat, sunscreen and hiking poles recommended. Some trails are dirt and others are paved. In case of bad weather, we will cancel.

Muscle Powered Saturday Hike to Tahoe Meadows Interpretive Loop and Boardwalk Trail

Come and joined this Muscle Powered leader-led hike on Saturday to Tahoe Meadows Interpretive (TMI) Loop and Boardwalk trail. This beautiful trail starts at the Tahoe Meadows Tahoe Rim Trail Parking lot, on the south side of highway 431, just past the Mt. Rose Summit. It is an easy and fairly flat hike of about 4+ miles around the TMI Loop and then “down” the meadow trail to the boardwalk trail loop and back to the parking lot.

With approximately 2,485 miles of national trails throughout the Silver State, the Nevada Department of Conservation and Natural Resources is excited to “wear our hearts on our backpacks” as we join the country in celebrating five decades of the National Trails System.

Missing snowmobile rider found dead on Tahoe Rim Trail near Spooner Summit

On Thursday, March 29 at approximately 4:50 p.m., deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the Tahoe Rim Trail at Spooner Summit for a reported missing person.

Meet at the Hwy 50 Park and Ride to carpool to this trailhead. We will hike about 3-4 miles roundtrip. Closed-toed shoes and water are required. Bring a friend and/or friendly dogs. Hats, sunscreen and walking sticks recommended.

Muscle Powered Thursday Hike program are hikes of between 2 to 4 miles in length, often with some elevation gain (no more than 500') and can be on a paved path, smooth wide trail, or single track. The hikes will usually be of approximately 1 1/2 duration.

A jazzy Tuesday has arrived. Catch the Millennial Bugs this evening as they perform in the Comma Coffee Courtyard. The trails are are permitted by Carson City Parks and Recreation & Open Space Department and the Humbolt-Toiyabe USFS.

National Trails Day celebrated with festival at Spooner Lake
