Recently, I received a photo of a stink bug that I suspected was the invasive brown marmorated stink bug. However, the insect seemed to be more charcoal gray than the typical brown color. Insects can look very different not only at different stages of development but also when found in different areas.


My gardening clothes stink and I’m a happy woman! I’ve been pruning a Rhus trilobata, commonly called skunkbush sumac. Its name tells the story. I should have left my malodorous garments outside rather than carrying that pungent scent into the house. Oh well, I don’t care. I’m happy because I’m pruning. It takes so little to put a smile on my face.

Red wriggler worms are decomposing work horses. They eat paper and food scraps turning them into compost, a nutrient-rich material for plants.

I asked Cory at The Greenhouse Project to share a worm composting method. He suggests a 3-bin method, starting with plastic bins approximately 1-1/2 feet by 2-1/2 feet. The boxes are shallow, because worms are surface-dwellers and prefer to live in the top six inches of bedding material.

Long overdue, there’s a new place in Carson City that will be able to comfortably house visitors — and that means friends and family who want to stay more than a few days in your place — in a comfortable home-like setting. You know what Ben Franklin said about visitors staying more than three days: “Fish and visitors stink after three days.”

American founding father Benjamin Franklin is credited with having once said, "The first mistake made in politics is getting into it."

Here in Northern Nevada, the same could be said about jumping feet first into the debate over the Silver State's population of wild horses, an emotionally-charged, hot-button topic if there ever was one.

Finally the Nevada Appeal includes my name and the statements I made at a Board meeting. I have not had this much attention in the last four years.

Politics is held in an arena, where punches are thrown. I have been in the boxing ring earlier in my life; knocked out cold, my opponent had the best left hook. My nose has been re-arranged a few times. I can take a punch.

Sean Miller of Carson City took home Best Overall Beard at the annual Nevada Day beard contest Saturday following the parade.

Beard enthusiasts came from all over the state to compete in Carson City's annual tradition where there are 9 different categories. According to competition veterans this is one of the nation's best beard contests.

"I have been to the nationals and Sacramento's beard contest, but Carson City's gets bigger and better every year," said three-time Salt and Pepper division winner, Ken Swiff.

ANGEL LAKE, ELKO COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (http://www.ndow.org) reports:
Fishing varies from day to day, with some days being good, while others being slow. Best time of day is from about 6:00 am to 10:30 am and then again after the shadows start to hit the water in late afternoon.
Best conditions seem to be with a 5 to 10 mph breeze, putting a small chop on the water.
A few fish are being taken with small dry flies, mostly yellow in color, but most of the luck is still coming with nymphs below an indicator or dry fly.

Fort Churchill Cooling Ponds:

The Carson City Board of Supervisors today approved $106,255 plus a 5 percent contingency to fund the Arlington Square ice rink for the coming season.

Parks and Recreation Director Roger Moellendorf said they are looking at leasing to own the ice rink equipment this year, thus reducing the cost for future years, and the contingency was requested to account for the additional costs.

The item was originally discussed two weeks ago and postponed because the supervisors preferred the ice rink be funded through redevelopment funds rather than the general fund.

The Carson City Board of Supervisors will consider a proposal to operate the Arlington Square Ice Rink for another season at the board's Oct. 7 meeting.

According to the staff summary, "This request is to expend $192,730 from the General Fund to support the operations of the Arlington Square Ice Rink for the 2010-2011 season. Staff is estimating that the ice skating rink will bring in $86,475; therefore the net subsidy will be $106,255."

The state Republican party has confirmed it will be filing an ethics complaint against Secretary of State Ross Miller and state Treasurer Kate Marshall alleging the improper use of publicly funded web pages, phone lines and state employees for their respective reelection campaigns.
“The Nevada Republican party is moving forward with an ethics complaint,” confirmed Ciara Turns, Communications Director for the state party.  “We look forward to the ethics commission completing an investigation into these improper actions.”
