If your new year’s resolution includes volunteering, the Muscle Powered Trash Mob is a quick, but mighty, helping hand. Learn about the future of the Stewart Indian School Historic Site during an encore lecture at the Nevada State Museum. You’ll be ‘Singin’ in the Rain’ all weekend; Youth Theater Carson City’s final weekend of performances is sure to bring down the house. The Monks of the Gaden Shartse Monastery will teach a Tibetan Calligraphy and Butter Sculpture Workshop and hold a Vajravidarin Healing Ritual in the Brewery Arts Center today. Carson’s nightlife features live music, karaoke, Carson Comedy, and west coast swing. Read on for all the details.

FRIDAY, Jan. 19: Things to do in Carson City

There will be free live music this weekend at The Loft inside the Carson Nugget in Carson City. Soul Persuaders have been working together for most of their lives.

They brought with them decades of professional experience playing, recording and touring with many of the biggest names in R&B, Motown, Soul and Funk including the Contours, Carl Carlton, Marvelettes, Rick James, Temptations, Four Tops, Ray Charles, Shotgun, Little Anthony and the Imperials, Freida Payne, Leslie Gore, Miracles, Drifters, Gene Chandler, Flamingos, and many more!

The shows are Friday and Saturday, 9 p.m.

As we stand at the beginning of a new year, consider getting involved with a local non-profit: FISH, Advocates to End Domestic Violence, and the Nevada Humane Society are just a few of the great organizations in our valley.

Playing in the snow probably isn’t an option for this weekend, but Singing in the Rain sure is. The kids of Youth Theater Carson City present a junior adaptation of the musical favorite this weekend and next. The Experimental Aircraft Association hosts ‘Young Eagle’ flights every few months at the Carson Airport to give kids 8 – 17 a plane ride to remember. Help out the Dayton Food Bank during their ‘Stuff-a-Cop-Car’ food drive at the Smith’s in Dayton; unexpired non-perishables of all kinds are appreciated. It’s finally here, the last weekend of 2017. It’s fairly quiet around town, until Sunday night, that is. Today, Muscle Powered is leading a five-mile half-day hike along Prison Hill. Take advantage of the unseasonably warm weather, and join them. The Carson Nugget is hosting three nights of comedy this weekend: catch Myles Weber on the stage tonight. Head’s up. Galaxy Theater usually plays a movie from the past on Sundays and Wednesdays. This week, we get treated to the Christmas Classic, Die Hard. You won’t want to miss that.

And the top finisher in the eighth annual Reno Gazette-Journal roundup of local songs is “Drunk Off Your Love” — an unsentimental and undeniably catchy, funky soul song from long-time local favorites the Sextones that has a distinctly vintage feel right down to the classic analog tape on which it was recorded.

The spirit of Christmas comes to life as the 17-piece Reno Jazz Orchestra and the Pat Esters Gospel Choir blends Christmas favorites, jazz, and soul - with a few surprises mixed in – for three performances of feel good, ‘get ready for the holidays’ music and song. The Reno Youth Jazz Orchestra will perform as well.

For the sixth year, Carson City residents lined up Friday night to feast on delicious, savory soup served in handmade clay pottery created by local artisans as part of the Empty Bowls Project to raise money for local families and individuals who often go without daily hot, nutritious cooked meals.

With Thanksgiving just days away, the holiday season is just around the corner. The annual Holiday Craft Fair at Carson High features a plethora of handmade and locally crafted gifts for the loved ones on your shopping list. The wet weather has passed, at least for a few days. If you didn’t want to brave the downpour to drop-off a frozen turkey Thursday, then you are in luck. Another frozen turkey drive runs all day at the Max Casino in Carson City or the Sanchez Meat Co. in Minden. The Carson High Craft Show, a long-time locals’ favorite, begins this evening at 5 p.m.

As a recent beneficiary of Nevada Housing Division’s Home is Possible grant assistance to firmly plant resident first-time homebuyers into Nevada soil, I found myself needing to take a fresh look at my old furniture in new rooms. To aid me in that endeavor, I looked up the new kid in town: Heather Leonard at Brown Bear Designs and Associates located at 1492 US-395, Suite 103, in Gardnerville. Delicious fall scents and soft music welcomed me through the door.

Although Veterans Day was observed yesterday, there are several things today that honor our former members of the military. Battle Born Harley Davidson is throwing an appreciation party complete with food trucks. Virginia City’s annual Veterans Day Parade begins at 11 a.m. and the City of Reno will commence their parade after a short ceremony beginning at 11:11 a.m. You’ll find an abundance of craft fairs in Carson City, Carson Valley, and Dayton. Today, Tuesday we recognize the second year passing of Carson City Sheriff’s Office Deputy Carl Howell. On Saturday, an all-day music lineup featuring nationally recognized artists is expected to draw thousands to Battle Born Harley-Davidson, the site of the inaugural Carl Howell Memorial Music Festival.

The valley is alive with the sound of music: the Jazz and Beyond Music Festival, to be specific. Just about everywhere you go, you’ll be treated to something to soothe the soul or get the toes tapping. Get the kids up early for the Young Eagle Flights at the Carson City Airport – they’re free, but you need to be on time for registration. The Brewery Arts Center continues its unforgettable season of free concerts under the stars in Carson City this Saturday with a lineup of rock, R&B soul and reggae music. This week's performance at the Minnesota Street Stage features reggae all-star headliner Marla Brown and local artists Moz’ Motley Blues.

Summer weekends make me wish I had a clone. With all the hustle and bustle in town, there is just no way to do and see it all. Start the day at the Silver Dollar Car Classic and you can get your fill of shiny chrome and breakfast, too; the Kiwanis will be serving up pancakes until 10:30 a.m. The Downtown Carson City Wine Walk has been infiltrated by the Jazz and Beyond Music Festival. Several of the stops will be hosting musicians, in addition to vino.
