The Slide Fire that started Sunday afternoon from a crashed recreational aircraft where one person died, is 15 percent contained as of early Monday evening, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

UPDATE 12:47PM: According to KTVN Channel 2, authorities say one person is confirmed dead after a small recreational aircraft crash that sparked the 80-acre Slide Fire. The FAA and NTSB are investigating.

For a lazy afternoon in the shade, you’ll find live music on the porch of the Genoa Bar. The Tahoe Orchestra brings their annual 9/11 Memorial Concert to St. Gall’s Church in Gardnerville. Virginia City is trapped in a time loop during Civil War Days. Don’t forget to get your grub on at the annual Rib Cook-off in Sparks. Read on for more events for both Sunday and Monday.

The Carson High School senior class of 2019 arose early, not an easy task for a high school student, to celebrate the rising of the sun on this their final year of high school. A tradition that began decades ago at CHS has seniors jumping out of bed still wearing their pajamas, grabbing their blankets, and heading off to the CHS football field to arrive by 6 a.m.

It’s nice that the beginning of the school year is almost immediately rewarded with a three-day weekend. You’ll find annual events like Civil War Days in Virginia City and the Best in the West Rib Cook-off in Sparks, in addition to smaller happenings like the monthly Downtown Carson City Wine Walk and a roller derby double-header. If you haven’t made plans to head for the hills, take a look at your options and have a fun and safe Labor Day weekend.

SATURDAY:

On Sunday, Aug. 26, a team of residents from Summit Estates Senior Living and Memory Care will take their place at the starting line for a special 1-mile event created especially for the seniors, ages 66-90, by The Dolan Running Series, produced by Reno 5000.

According to the calendar, summer is coming to a close but South Lake Tahoe is refusing to acknowledge it. Tahoe South will host a magnitude of events extending the season from Labor Day into October with entertainment, culinary festivals, music, outdoor recreation, competitions and a lakefront laser show.

On Aug. 26, 2018, a team of residents from Summit Estates Senior Living and Memory Care, Reno, will take their place at the starting line for the RENO 5000 JR 1 Mile 2018 Country Run. Wearing matching team T-shirts and comfortable walking shoes, a few will have their walkers or canes in hand, but that’s okay, said Amanda Jenkins, administrator at Summit Estates. “Life is a journey and our residents embrace new experiences and challenges regardless of their age or physical abilities. They are physically and mentally ready to conquer this year’s race.”

Thank goodness for Thursday. The weekend is just hours away, but there is no reason to wait for the fun to start. Take a stroll with Muscle Powered: today’s hike will wind through the far east side of Carson, from Silver Saddle Ranch to Mexican Dam. Artsy Fartsy Art Galley hosts an artist meet and greet for Catherine King; enjoy a glass of wine while discovering her newest work. Head down the rabbit hole, and you may wind up on McFadden Plaza. The Carson City Classic Cinema Club brings the recent live-action version of Alice in Wonderland to the big screen on the downtown stage.

Hello fellow anglers. If you think you can go up to the higher lakes to get away from the heat, think again. It is hot even way up at the 8,000 foot level.

Free parking at Harveys and Harrah’s Lake Tahoe ends on Monday, July 30. Rates will be more expensive during summertime and ski season and during special events, such as an outdoor concert or the weeklong celebrity golf tournament.

There is more hot and smoky in store for the day, including a very real threat of thunderstorms. You may want to stick to indoor activities when the air quality is low like this. The Capital City Community Band has a free concert and ice cream social scheduled for this afternoon at the First United Methodist Church. All are welcome, and it’s hard to argue with ice cream on a day like this. If you are looking to start your own business, but still some legal guidance, you’ll find the ‘Lunch-n-Learn’ workshop at the Adams Hub extremely helpful.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE — Summer is here and that means it’s time to get out and enjoy your public lands. The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit and Heavenly Mountain Resort offers folks to Hike with a Ranger this summer.

“You find the heart of an organization on the front lines,” new Carson Valley Medical Center Chief Executive Officer Jeff Prater said during his first day of work June 4. “That’s where the defining work is being done. That’s where our focus needs to be.”

There is quite a bit to look forward to today, not to mention this coming weekend. The Rockabilly Riot roars into town and sets up shop at Mills Park for a whole weekend of vintage rat-rods and rock-n-roll. You’ll find the Extreme Motor Officers Challenge in the park, too, so expect it to be noisy. The Pony Express rides again, as it does every year, and retraces its historic route. Keep an eye out this evening for the rider heading east. Enjoy some blues, funk and rock courtesy of the Mylo McCormick Project at Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park as part of their annual summer music series.

Before we get to the report, I would like to stress the importance of fire danger as conditions are such a tinder box that a spark could set off a fire at any time, such as what happened this week in Carson City.

On January 30, 2018 Betty Block (Rowe) a long-term resident of Carson City left us at the age of 87. Born in Bronxville, NY on September 18, 1930, Betty was raised in Scarsdale, NY, spending all of her childhood summers in Orient Point, NY. Betty attended Scarsdale High and graduated from Dana Hall preparatory school. She attained a B.A. Degree in Mathematics at Vassar College. It was there that she was better known by her classmates as “Betty Boop.”

Hello fellow anglers, there's a lot going on in June as I will be fishing with around 2,000 kids over the next couple of weekends. This weekend I will be at the Lampe Park Kids Fishing Derby in Gardnerville and the Sawmill Pond Kids Fishing Derby in South Lake Tahoe.

At the start of the 14th Annual Reno-Tahoe Odyssey Relay Run Adventure on Friday in Wingfield Park, Jonah Vandever will join runners scheduled for the 7:30 a.m. start time. Only the 20-year-old double amputee won’t be running, he’ll be hand-cycling.

The 20th Anniversary Senior Celebration will be held today in the Carson Nugget; free for all to attend, you’ll have the chance to visit a variety of booths with information and resources. After yesterday’s freakish hailstorm, we may as well be ready for anything. More thunderstorms might be on the way this afternoon, but I can’t promise they follow any kind of schedule. The first of the season Third Thursday Wine Walk in downtown Gardnerville is this afternoon, and you may want to bring an umbrella as you sip and stroll.

Thanks to a grant from Hilton Corporation, the Carson City Chamber Board of Directors is offering Carson City residents enrolled in one of the local high schools or currently employed within the hospitality and tourism industry the opportunity to apply for three $1,165 scholarships to attend the new Truckee Meadows Community College Hospitality and Tourism Management program.

An American Indian tribe with deep roots in the Lake Tahoe basin is seeking to reclaim land that’s part of a Nevada resort area. The Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California wants to ask Congress for nearly 375 acres of federal land in Incline Village.

STATELINE — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is continuing its strong commitment to Lake Tahoe, approving a new agreement with the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency that provides $1 million in federal funding to help control, prevent, and monitor harmful aquatic invasive species in the lake.
