Sierra Lutheran is inviting area veterans to attend a special Veterans Day assembly at the school on Wednesday, November 7, from 9:30 - 10:00 a.m., as part of its annual “Remembering And Honoring Our Heroes.”

The focus of the commemorative ceremony will be to educate students and interested community members on the history of Veterans Day, while also taking time to salute veterans in attendance.

Following are all of the entries for the 2018 Nevada Day Parade, to take place on Saturday, Oct. 27 starting at 10 a.m. The parade starts at North Carson and William streets, and ends at South Carson and Stewart streets. There are 215 entries in this year's parade.

CARSON CITY — Winging it has serious implications for Conner Love and those around him, but after the last 24 months, he wouldn’t have it any other way.

Good morning Carson City. Today is Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2018. For those keeping score, there are 77 days until Christmas. Among today's featured events are a morning organized walk and evening hike, an estate planning seminar, the second League of Women Voters Election Forum, a fundraiser for a Carson City woman diagnosed with cancer, art exhibits and live jazz.

Sierra Lutheran will host the inaugural "Christ IS Christmas" Craft Fair the weekend of Nov. 3-4. The fair will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday in the Norm Brauer Gymnasium.

He is one of those most likely to succeed types who still somehow manages to take things even a little further. And everyone who knows him just nods in unison.

Sierra Lutheran High School will host its annual 7th & 8th Grade Visitation Day on Tuesday, Oct. 9, from 9 a.m. to noon. The event, which is free to all 7th and 8th graders across the five county area, is carefully designed to give students a multi-dimensional look into what has made Sierra Lutheran one of the top high schools in the region.

Leadership Douglas County (LDC) is a long-standing educational program provided by the Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce.

It’s going to be a breezy weekend, so you may want to rethink spending the day at the lake. Luckily, plenty of options are available just about anywhere you are. Carson City has a car show and Brewfest hitting the downtown corridor, and to the south, Minden and Gardnerville are having their party of the year: Carson Valley Days. It’s World Doll Day at the Nevada State Museum with special displays, activities, and a special performance by the local Young Chautauquans.

School let out and summer wasted no time getting to the fun stuff. This weekend will bring the Revival Car Show and the annual Capital City Brewfest downtown, in addition to a wine walk at the Carson Mall and the Fair/Rendezvous at Mills Park. Today, you can enjoy some live music at Living the Good Life or Bella Vita Bistro, get your karaoke fix at Whiskey Tavern, or head to the Carson Mall for their monthly cruise night.

Carson City area high school students were visited Thursday by the national cable and satellite television network C-SPAN and its state-of-the-art motor coach bus.

National cable and satellite television network C-SPAN is returning to the Nevada state capital this Wednesday and Thursday, April 11-12 to engage the community through interactive demonstrations of its public service resources, a C-SPAN press release said.

The weekend has arrived, and it will be an exceptionally long one for the schoolkids of Carson City: spring break begins Monday. There’s a rumor of snowfall for this weekend, but it’s not expected to be too heavy in the valley. Don’t quote me on that, though, I’ve been wrong before. Break a leg to the Douglas students performing in ‘Game of Tiaras’ this weekend; the show sounds hilarious, but be warned, it’s not for kids. For a family friendly outing, check out Story Time with Suzie at the Nevada Railroad Museum, or photos with the Easter Bunny at PetSmart.

SATURDAY:

All families of grade school students are invited to this annual event on Saturday, Feb. 3. Families will be admitted to all basketball games for FREE. There will be half-time games for the kids, and young basketball players are encouraged to attend the locker room “pre-game talks” with Varsity coaches.

Snack bar and free photo opps will be available. Varsity games are at 4 & 5:30pm, versus Mineral County (Hawthorne). Don't miss this fun event and a chance to get to know Sierra Lutheran High School a little bit better!

This annual event is hosted by the SLHS Cheerleaders at Sierra Lutheran. Students will learn cheers, jumps, and a band dance, then perform at the half-time of the Sierra Lutheran JV boys game for the whole family to come watch! (at no additional cost!). Cost is $30 per student, $25 for each additional sibling. 100% of the proceeds will be donated to local resident Aunicka Pierce, an 11-year-old recently diagnosed with bone cancer. Sierra Lutheran High School, along with Carson High School and Douglas High School’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes, were fortunate this past week to receive a visit from Flora Savai, a young lady who grew up in the Mathare slums of Nairobi, Kenya.

As Sierra Lutheran’s winter sports season begins, they are looking back and celebrating the last Fall NIAA sport to finish its season - Academic Olympics. 



Over Thanksgiving break, AO teams from around the region travelled to Eureka for the State Championship. Sierra Lutheran’s team members are the Regional Champions, winning the Western Division by a margin of 10 points. Quite a feat, considering how strong the Western Division is - Whittell, the team ranked 3rd regionally, was the State Champion.

December has arrived, and all things holidays are on the way. The annual Silver and Snowflakes Tree Lighting Celebration tonight will shut down traffic on Carson City for a little while. Sleigh rides, caroling, the Empty Bowls Soup Fest, and a performance by the Youth Theater Carson City Showstoppers are just some of the planned festivities. Stay downtown for comedy at the Carson Nugget, Improv at the Brewery Arts Center, or a live DJ at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar and at Battle Born Social. Keep reading, though, that’s just the tip of the Friday happenings iceberg.

FRIDAY:

Tis the season for visits with Santa, holiday twinkle lights, and craft fairs and festivals. In order to make your December planning a little easier, take a look at what is coming up in the Carson City, Carson Valley, Dayton, and Virginia City area. Go deck the halls, get some jingle bells, and wassail away.

The Silver and Snowflakes Festival of Lights annual tree lighting celebration outside the Nevada State Capitol Building in Carson City is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 1. Activities are planned throughout downtown from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. and listed below.

Although Veterans Day was observed yesterday, there are several things today that honor our former members of the military. Battle Born Harley Davidson is throwing an appreciation party complete with food trucks. Virginia City’s annual Veterans Day Parade begins at 11 a.m. and the City of Reno will commence their parade after a short ceremony beginning at 11:11 a.m. You’ll find an abundance of craft fairs in Carson City, Carson Valley, and Dayton. On Veterans Day, we take time to honor those men and women that have served in our armed forces. The holiday is observed today, meaning schools and public offices will be closed. Several locations have something special for Veterans this weekend, go HERE for a list of freebies, specials and discounts good today or tomorrow.

The day may start out cold and wet, but nothing can rain on a three-day weekend. Tomorrow we observe Veterans Day, and say thank you to those who have fought for freedom and liberty. It definitely feels like soup weather, so it’s only appropriate that the Carson Chamber of Commerce is hosting one of their ‘Soup’s On’ Lectures.

Sierra Lutheran High School's Fall Play, Foibles & Folly by Michelle R. Davis, is a 90-minute quirky comedy for all ages. When teenager Amanda McGowan moves with her scientist father and uncle to the run-down Distinctive Manor and meets its “distinctive” inhabitants, she learns about taking the time to get to know people and standing up for the people she cares about.

At the beginning of this month, Michael Nelson of Sierra Lutheran High School was awarded “Teacher of the Month” by the Rotary Club of Carson City.

The Sierra Lutheran Cross Country Team traveled to Folsom, California for the Bella Vista Bronco Invitational on Saturday, Oc. 14. The weather was clear and cool with a touch of humidity. The course of 3.1 miles winds across a grass field, semi-hard packed dirt trails and gravel roads through Willow Hills Cross Country Course at the Willow Hills Reservoir.

Sierra Lutheran High School Principal, Dr. Tami Seddon announced Thursday that senior Aleyna Gilson has been named a Commended Student in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Since the 2014-2015 school year, all high school juniors in the State of Nevada are required to take the ACT. This requirement comes as the Nevada Department of Education tries to identify the level of college readiness that public high schools are providing.
