Western Nevada College re-establishing nursing program in Fallon

A strong desire at Western Nevada College to restore nursing classes at the Fallon campus is coming to fruition, thanks to a partnership between Churchill County, the U.S. Department of Labor, and the college.

The partnership with Churchill County provides WNC with the use of a 2,500-square-foot laboratory space located one mile from the Fallon campus.

WNC will be able to provide nursing coursework to students from the Fallon region.

Carson City victim services administrator Frankee Haynes certified as national advocate

Carson City Victim Services Administrator Frankee Haynes has received top certification as a national advocate for victims of violent crimes, Carson City District Attorney Jason Woodbury announced Thursday.

The National Organization for Victim Assistance highest recognition was awarded to Haynes, noting her extensive training in multiple advocacy categories, including domestic violence, homicide, sexual assault, and child abuse.

South Lake Tahoe police release sketches in sex assault investigation

On July 25, a woman visiting South Lake Tahoe reported a robbery and attempted sexual assault in a laundry room at Lakeland Village on Lake Tahoe Boulevard.

Over the past year, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department has received at least three such reports and believe they may be related due to similarities in the subject's description and method of operation, said Lt. Brian Williams.

Carson City’s tastiest event coming up Saturday, July 23

There’s a reason that “Taste of Downtown” holds true to its name. Dozens of Carson City restaurants will participate in this evening event, giving residents and visitors alike the chance to sample food, dig into unique dishes and get a feel for the vibe of the local cuisine.

Whether it’s burgers, nachos, tamales, or Thai food, participants are likely to find it in downtown Carson City on July 23, the date that “Taste” is scheduled in honor of its 23rd year. Restaurants like “The Thick Slice Pizza,” “Red’s Old 395 Grill,” and “Yang’s Kitchen” are taking part.

The World Gets Safer Every Day

We were again reminded this week that ignorance can breed misunderstanding and occasionally violence.

We were deeply saddened by the senseless murder of five police officers in Dallas. The young shooter, an African-American, claimed outrage over several earlier shootings of black men by police officers elsewhere. He had no known connections to these men, nor to the police officers he shot.

His motive was based on a logical fallacy to which too many people fall prey.

More than 15 people gathered Saturday morning in the Bully's parking lot off West College Parkway, braving overcast skies and a crisp spring chill to participate in the Sexual Assault Awareness Walk hosted by the Associated Students of Western Nevada.

WNC to host Carson City community walk Saturday to spotlight sexual assault

Western Nevada College student leaders are serious about preventing sexual assault in our society. To bring awareness to the problem, they will lead a free public Sexual Assault Awareness Walk on Saturday, April 30, 10 am.

The 2.3 mile round-trip walk will begin in the parking lot just south of the Bully’s Restaurant at 3530 N. Carson St, at the intersection of U.S. Hwy 395 and West College Parkway in Carson City.

Vet Center provides curbside service for Carson City veterans

Military veterans who have difficulty traveling outside of Carson City for Veterans Administration (VA) services have the benefit of some of those resources coming to them.

Perfecto Manuta, a Readjustment Counseling Technician with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, coordinates the Mobile Vet Center, an outreach on wheels for the Reno Vet Center.

Western Nevada College nursing student named 2016 Regents Scholar Award recipient

Pursuing an education in nursing has taken Diana Meza Cabrera on a lengthy road of challenges, experiences and rewards.

Since graduating from high school in 2006, Meza Cabrera consistently found ways to help others. As an outreach educator for the Live Violence Free program in South Lake Tahoe, Calif., she has assisted domestic violence, child abuse and sexual abuse victims. She also been a student assistant at the Humboldt State University Health Center, and has participated in blood and toothbrush drives while attending WNC.

Carson City Sheriff: Pursuit ends with crash on North Roop Street, suspect in custody

UPDATE 4:35PM: The following is from Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong regarding the vehicle pursuit and crash that happened Tuesday afternoon on North Roop Street:

At approximately 12:45 p.m., the Carson City Sheriff’s Office attempted to serve a warrant on Jose Alberto Garcia-Perez, 24, for Luring a Child to Engage in Sexual Conduct (Felony), Open and Gross Lewdness with a Child (Gross Misdemeanor), and Statutory Sexual Seduction (Felony). The warrant carried with it a bail of $40,000.

Advocates to End Domestic Violence launches micro-fundraiser to purchase changing station

Thursday marks the start of our drive to purchase a diaper changing station for our shelter office. We need your help to raise $350 before the end of this week.
