The public town forum Monday evening at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall brought together political candidates to take questions from the audience and discuss their platforms.

The League of Women Voters of Northern Nevada, partnered with Sierra Nevada Forums, American Association of University Women Capital Branch, PFLAG Carson Region, Partnership Carson City, and the Carson City Arts and Culture Coalition are hosting the series, the last of which will be held tonight, Tuesday, October 16.

A much fitting and all-new museum experience inside Battle Born Hall at the State Capitol in Carson City called “Trailblazing Nevada” was unveiled Wednesday at a public reception headed by Gov. Brian Sandoval.

Carson City Republican Women's Club will meet on Tuesday, Oct. 16 to hear Elliot Malin, Deputy Political Director of Dean Heller's U.S. Senate campaign, and Matt Rosborg, Regional Field Director for Adam Laxalt for Governor campaign. Their representatives will provide an update on the campaigns along with time for questions and answers.

CARSON CITY — In a continued commitment to preserve and protect Nevada’s water resources, the Nevada Department of Transportation was approved for termination of its consent decree in the United States Nevada District Court.

As we head into our first full week of fall, sunny skies and a cool evening are on tap for this Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2018. Among today's events are a morning walk and evening hike hosted by Muscle Powered, a chamber luncheon that focuses on Nevada Ballot Question 3 and the showing of the film "Westward the Women" by the Carson City Classic Cinema Club.

In the upcoming midterm election Nevada voters will be faced a question of tax exemption. If adopted, Question 2 would create a state and local sales tax exemption for feminine hygiene products.

Tina Davis-Hersey, Democratic candidate for State Senate District 16, will be the featured speaker at Monday's Democratic luncheon. Ms. Davis-Hersey, a Carson City resident, will speak to the many issues that distinguish her candidacy from that of her Republican opponent, incumbent State Senator Ben Kieckhefer of Reno.

The League of Women Voters will host a number of election forums during the month of October at the Brewery Arts Performance Hall in Carson City.

The League of Women Voters of Northern Nevada in partnership with Sierra Nevada Forums, AAUW, and PFLAG is holding a candidates forum on October 16 beginning at 5:30 pm at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall in Carson City.

Candidates for Congressional District 2, State Senate District 16, and Assembly District 40 will participate. The candidates for Senate District 17 and Assembly District 39 have also been invited. I had already written out this morning's column ahead of time when I learned of U.S. Sen. John McCain's passing.

His death has changed the course of my day, because now I am writing to remember the man who earned the media moniker of "Maverick," and the reputation of someone who usually went his own way.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Department of Education on Wednesday announced the signing of an emergency regulation, providing guidance to schools on how to meet new background check requirements for volunteers until a permanent regulation is adopted later this year by the Legislative Commission. Gov. Brian Sandoval signed the emergency regulation.

I’m not even going to speculate on the air quality, but please use your best judgement when choosing your activities and there may be some cancellations that I am not aware of. Downtown has a full day of options, but the back roads may be a little more difficult to navigate due to construction projects. The great music that awaits will be worth the hassle. Read on and you’ll find indoors and outdoors activities that will help alleviate the cabin fever.

It is finally Friday. As August melts away, it brings us closer to the new school year. Carson High returning students are invited to the Senator Kick-off this morning to get their fill of back-to-school updates. Families will love the Movie in the Park; bring a blanket or chairs and come prepared to enjoy ‘Coco.’ Three days of high-flying fun begins today at Heritage Park in Gardnerville as the Splash Dogs competition gets underway. You will always find live music around town on Fridays, but during the Jazz and Beyond Festival, it seems like music is everywhere.

Looks like another great day to stay indoors. The Carson City Library has several activities planned today, and one of them might be what you’re looking for. Story time this morning is for the little ones. Just about everyone is welcome to participate in their weekly Lego Club build. Families will enjoy movie night; just make sure to register online if you’re planning on seeing Peter Rabbit with them this evening. The Jazz and Beyond Music Festival is in full swing, so you’ll find plenty of music around.

Funding for upgrades and new cameras for the 26-camera AlertTahoe network, which tracked more than 100 fires for firefighters in 2017, was announced Tuesday by the University of Nevada, Reno’s Nevada Seismological Lab Director Graham Kent in a presentation at the annual Lake Tahoe Summit.

Paul Dominique Laxalt, a former Nevada Governor, United States Senator, Lieutenant Governor and District Attorney, and one of former President Ronald Reagan’s closest friends in politics, died at a healthcare facility in Northern Virginia on Monday. He was 96.

CARSON CITY — Wednesday marked the opening day to apply for the Nevada Promise Scholarship. High school students graduating from a Nevada high school in spring 2019, who plan to attend Western Nevada College in fall 2019, must apply for the scholarship no later than October 31, 2018, to be eligible.

A wildlife bill supported by the Nevada Department of Wildlife is now before both houses of Congress. The Recovering America’s Wildlife Act recommends crucial funding for conservation of those fish and wildlife species in greatest need across the country.

With a thoughtful and succinct speech Monday, President Donald Trump nominated Judge Brett Kavanaugh to succeed retiring Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy. With the most experience of the people Trump considered and a stellar textualist and originalist record, he was considered by many as the front runner for the nomination.

Judge the person, not the label. And Friday July 6, is the perfect opportunity. Democratic Congresswoman Jacky Rosen, candidate for US Senate and Senator Aaron Ford, Democratic candidate for Nevada Attorney General will be in Carson City on July 6, to visit with Carson City voters.

Pennsylvania and Rhode Island Senates and Houses of Representatives will open their June 19 and 20 sessions respectively in Harrisburg and Providence with Hindu mantras, containing verses from world’s oldest existing scripture.

Reno based Hindu statesman Rajan Zed will deliver the invocations from ancient Sanskrit scriptures before the Senates and Houses of these states. After Sanskrit delivery, he then will read the English interpretation of the prayer. Sanskrit is considered a sacred language in Hinduism and root language of Indo-European languages.

After months of campaigning and millions of dollars expended on ads and voter outreach, Nevada’s primary election is finally here. Not only will the results of today’s election set in place the top contests on the November ballot, including one of the most closely watched U.S. Senate battles in the country and an open gubernatorial seat, but many important races will be effectively decided based on Tuesday’s results.
