Different life journeys brought nine Nevadans together to celebrate a shared accomplishment; earning an internationally recognized manufacturing certification. Emily Howarth’s advanced manufacturing and mechatronics students were honored on Wednesday at Western Nevada College. In as little as two semesters, the nine students earned the Siemens Certified Mechatronic Systems certification.


Want to be a lawyer for a day? At CHS, with Mock Trial, it is possible. Mock Trial is Law and Order set in a simulated trial environment in a real courthouse with a real judge. The Carson High School Mock Trial team will meet professional attorneys and students around the state to compete Feb. 17 in Reno.

It is time for a great workout at Carson High School to both support its students and potentially win a race, not to mention avoid a heart attack.

The seventh annual Safe and Sober 2017 5K Run/Walk at the CHS track facility, presented by Carson High Safe Grad Booster, is set for Feb. 11.

The Frezzo family of Washoe Valley honored their son and brother Mike, who passed away from esophageal cancer in 2014, by presenting a naming gift to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Nevada to establish the Mike Frezzo Tech Center for Club members ages 5 to 12.

Katie Leao, chief professional officer for the Club, said the Club’s tech lab had not been updated for over 8 years. The gift includes new furniture and 30 new Chromebook laptops, similar to those used by the Carson City School District.

An ambitious effort to explore solutions for safe, clean and efficient transportation and to establish a “Living Lab” in the northern Nevada communities of Reno, Sparks and Carson City is under way.

Saturday couldn’t have been a better day to be a kid. From Legos to locomotives, from cookies to crafts, and ice skates to canines, area children had plenty of fun activities to choose from in Carson City.

Oh baby, it’s cold outside. Jack Frost seems to be working overtime this weekend, bringing temperatures that will barely rise above freezing. I suggest some hot cocoa. Join Santa at Adele’s for pictures, cookies, and something warm to drink, just remember to bring an unwrapped toy to donate.

What’s next? We already have Megatron, R2-D2, Optimus Prime and Rosie. On back-to-back days at Western Nevada College, students immersed in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math education showed what they could do when their minds were stimulated through technology and robotics.

John Doiron, Carson High School’s Career and Technical Education’s new manufacturing instructor, stood in front of the Carson City Area Manufacturers Forum in early June to outline his plan for the manufacturing program and to ask for their support in sharing their knowledge to develop curriculum, being guest speakers in class and inviting students in to their facilities for field trips, internships and other work-based learning experiences.

Do you have skills, a hobby, special abilities? Are you looking for an audience to share them with? Look no further. Carson City’s University of Nevada Cooperative Extension is looking for adults to share their knowledge with 4-H youth ages 9 – 19.

Congratulations to the 18 Arrowhead 4-H Livestock members who participated in the 2016 Nevada Junior Livestock Show last month at the Reno Livestock Events Center. Club members raised and participated in classes in beef, goat, sheep, swine, dairy, quiz bowl and herdsmanship.

All members were required to take classes and be current in their Quality Assurance tests prior to showing in their species. Several members in the club raised and showed 2 species for the 2016 show year. See the list of ribbon and place winners below:

Aviation and aerospace displays, historic aircraft, formation fliers, hot air balloon rides, a pancake breakfast and more will be featured this Saturday at the Carson City Airport Open House.

With well over 6,000 visitors attending last year, this year’s event is expected will be bigger with a bevy of activities including interactive displays, flybys, plane and helicopter demonstrations, drone demonstrations, food and beverages, a bounce house and many family activities.

Four autonomous unmanned aircraft flew simultaneously on pre-determined flight paths at the Reno-Stead Airport using software developed at the University of Nevada, Reno, in collaboration with the NASA Ames Research Center, in a milestone event that included 24 unmanned aircraft at six sites across the country on April 19.

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension’s 4-H presents Capital City Farm Days this Thursday and Friday at Fuji Park in Carson City,

Thirty presenters, including representatives from the Nevada Department of Agriculture, the Bureau of Land Management, the Nevada State Museum, and other local and state agriculture and natural resources organizations, will teach preschool and elementary-age youth about Nevada agriculture, where food and fiber come from, and environmental issues related to agriculture.

The final event of the Senior Project happens April 18 and Carson High School reserves the entire school day to these momentous, rigorous, relevant, and result driven speeches. The excitement at CHS is intense as these seniors dress for the occasion, dawning everything from professional business attire to scrubs depending on the nature of their projects. Though college and career are just around the corner, a feeling of anticipation, excitement, and soon-to-be graduation flows through the air at CHS.

The seniors of Carson High School will deliver their Senior Project speeches on April 18. Each student must deliver an 8-12 minute speech in front of 4-5 Carson City Community members, and this is no easy task as, statistically, many fear public speaking more than death.

The first-ever symposium on the uses of aerial robotics systems and autonomous vehicles for emergency first responders is being hosted by the University of Nevada, Reno April 6-8.

Anthony Aguilar and Jack Wilson, both 13-year-old eighth-graders at Eagle Valley Middle School gave a demonstration on how to work a robotic arm at the annual Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math Night.

“You can move it up or down or also turn the rotation of the claw,” explained Anthony. He showed how to pick up different items with it.

Carson High School students will soon register for next year’s classes and will now have a new choice in the schedule as CHS’s Career and Technical Education program begins offering a new manufacturing technologies course of study in the 2016-2017 school year.

Western Nevada College has received a $142,000 STEM Workforce Challenge Grant to enhance its welding certificate and degree programs. The programs help meet the needs of the region’s advanced manufacturers. 

The grant will allow purchase of a robotic welder and associated curriculum. WNC will use college resources to upgrade its facilities to accommodate the new program. 

A hand-worn robotic device is being developed that will help millions of blind and visually impaired people navigate past movable obstacles or assist in their ability to pre-locate, pre-sense and grasp an object.

Gil Tapia embodies today’s CNC, or computer numerical control, machine shops: Neat and well groomed, smart and ambitious. From his neatly tucked in CGI polo shirt to his perfectly trimmed hair, he represents the precision and quality his employer is known for.

This week is the official Nevada Week of Respect. The purpose of this week is to promote respect as an antidote to bullying and cyberbullying. Here is what is going on at CHS to celebrate the Week of Respect:

• The American Sign Language club is going to be signing songs at lunch on Thursday.
• The Gay-Straight Alliance is going to be putting up a respect wall - a giant poster for people to write what they respect about someone else.
• There will be a daily announcement with a tip on being an upstanding young adult.

UPDATE 6PM: Carson Street has been re-opened between Second and Robinson streets as well as side streets which were closed after a package found this afternoon near the State Capitol Building was determined to be non-explosive, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

Hello everyone and welcome back to a new year of Carson High School Senator news. While we took a break from this column this summer, we still had plenty of CHS students busy with school activities over the break. Thank you to the community for supporting students who participated in national competitions across the United States. The Senators were very well represented this summer.

Western Nevada College’s Applied Industrial Technology program, which saw a 50 percent increase in student enrollment between 2014 and 2015, will begin renovations to expand its current facility, thanks to a $25,000 grant from the NV Energy Foundation.

Airplane owners, their aircrafts, old cars and motocycles, pilots, sponsors, vendors and guests of all ages can be found at the Carson City Airport grounds today, Saturday, for the airport's annual open house.

Planes will take to the skies through 4 p.m. The event is free and guests can can participate in interactive activities and magnificent displays the open house offers.

A week before the Carson City Airport Open House, aviation enthusiasts can get a thrill of the vintage aircraft variety this weekend aboard the "Tin Goose." The airplane will soar Saturday and Sunday over the capital city, taking community members on rides both days.

With hopes of generating enthusiasm among young people and using themes of robotics, aviation and aerospace to do it, Carson City Airport's annual open house returns to the skies above the capital city on Saturday, June 20, after a year hiatus.

More than 6,000 visitors attended the event in 2013. This year’s open house, which runs from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m., is free to the public. Activities will feature interactive displays, flybys, plane and helicopter demonstrations, robotics demonstrations, food and beverages, bounce house and many more family activities.
