CARSON CITY – The Republican Assembly Caucus has launched a media suite to keep Nevadans engaged and informed about lawmaker activities as the general election campaign season gets under way.

CARSON CITY – The Republican Assembly Caucus has elected Assemblyman Pete Goicoechea as its new minority leader, replacing the retiring Assemblywoman Heidi Gansert.
Goicoechea, R-Eureka, was the unanimous choice of the 14-member caucus.
Gansert, R-Reno, is not running for re-election to the Assembly.

CARSON CITY – A two-member panel of the state Ethics Commission has decided there is insufficient cause to move forward with a complaint that state Treasurer Kate Marshall used her office to benefit her re-election bid.

Sharron Angle, following her come-from-behind Republican Primary win Tuesday, has bounced to an 11-point lead over Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid in Nevada’s closely-watched U.S. Senate race, according to national pollster Rasmussen Reports.

CARSON CITY – In the fight for control of the Republican Party in the state Senate in the Tuesday primary it was an even split, with conservative candidates taking two of four contested seats and two others going to more moderate candidates backed by Senate Minority Leader Bill Raggio.

With less than two hours to go before Carson City polls close, Clerk/Recorder Alan Glover reports a busy primary day with a voter turnout, when all is said and done, that may be around 45 percent.
"It's going real well. The turnout is much better than we expected," Glover said, adding that early voting and absentee returns should represent about 30 percent of the cast ballots.
The breakdown in turnout seems to be largely Republican, with a 60-40 split, however the race for Carson City sheriff may be bringing out a lot of non-partisans and Democrats, he said.

A Nevada Republican U.S. Senate hopeful is withdrawing from the race a week before the primary election.
Gary Bernstein threw his support Tuesday to John Chachas, a former Wall Street banker who grew up in Ely and returned to Nevada to run for the seat held by Democratic Majority Leader Harry Reid. Bernstein was a long shot in the race that drew 12 GOP candidates.

CARSON CITY – Both Democrat and Republican lawmakers agree the 2011 legislative session will likely see a debate about the future of Nevada’s public employee pension program, but differences remain over whether radical change is needed to protect the state from a multi-billion long-term unfunded liability.

With early voting under way for the Nevada primaries, Republican U.S. Senate candidate Chad Christensen yesterday maintained that he will come out on top, despite polls showing him trailing well behind candidates Sue Lowden, Sharron Angle, and Danny Tarkanian..

CARSON CITY – Over the past several legislative sessions the state Senate Republican caucus has shown a willingness to work across the aisle with Democrats, with some GOP lawmakers voting more than once for tax increases as a way to balance the budget.

RENO — The Nevada Republican Party elected Mark Amodei its new chairman last night during a special Central Committee meeting at the Sienna Hotel and Casino.  Amodei, a former state senator, defeated Clark County Republican Party Political Director David Isbell by a vote of 218 to 54.
After the election, Amodei said he would focus on moving forward and defeating the Democrats in the upcoming elections. To do this, he says, he will focus on communication and collaboration within the party.

RENO – One Democrat running for lieutenant governor criticized the GOP incumbent for being invisible in the job, and all three Democrat candidates appearing at a debate Wednesday evening took jabs at each other as the June 8 primary election day draws near.

CARSON CITY – Gov. Jim Gibbons announced yesterday he is pursuing an initiative petition to subject labor negotiations between unions and local government entities to the open meeting law to give taxpayers access to the discussions.
Some Republican lawmakers welcomed the idea, saying the Democrat-controlled Legislature has been unwilling to consider such a proposal.

CARSON CITY — Nevada Assembly Speaker Barbara Buckley spoke today about a number of issues concerning both Nevada and the nation, including immigration reform and Nevada’s projected budget shortfall.

CARSON CITY — According to data released by the Nevada Secretary of State yesterday, the number of total registered Democrats only rose by 58 in April, fewer than the number of new registered members of Nevada’s largest third party, the Independent American Party, which has 374 more registered voters. This is also well under the 710 new nonpartisan voters and 1,268 new Republican voters.

Former U.S. senator, Vietnam war hero, advocate for disabled veterans and author Max Cleland will speak to Democrats in Carson City on Wednesday, officials announced Sunday.

The Carson City Democratic Central Committee invited the former Georgia senator to speak about ongoing policy issues for the November midterm election. He will address the public at 7 p.m. in the AFSCME building at the southwest corner of Robinson and Roop streets in Carson City.

CARSON CITY – Nevada GOP state treasurer candidate Steve Martin and Democrat incumbent Treasurer Kate Marshall engaged in a war of words this week over her management of the office for which she is seeking a second term.

CARSON CITY — Nevadans who intend to vote early in the primary and general elections this year will likely find themselves in the dark on the question of who has contributed to the campaigns of the candidates.
Despite efforts in past legislative sessions to improve the transparency of campaign contributions received by candidates, lawmakers have failed to make meaningful reforms to the reporting process.

CARSON CITY – When the Legislature adjourned its special session to balance the budget on March 1, lawmakers went home believing they had ensured the financial viability of the Millennium Scholarship program through 2014.
But the program, hit by declining tobacco settlement revenues and the diversion of financial support to help fill a more than $800 million budget shortfall, remains in jeopardy.

CARSON CITY – A spokesman for Nevada State Treasurer Kate Marshall is rejecting any suggestion that her participation in radio ads to promote a children’s contest involving a college savings program is aimed at helping her re-election campaign.

But a campaign consultant for her GOP opponent called Marshall a hypocrite for engaging in the same practice she criticized her predecessor for doing, and for “pushing the envelope” by running ads after the close of filing for office.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid spoke to Carson City Democrats today at their county convention at Eagle Valley Middle School.

Nevada's senior senator spent time talking and taking pictures with the attendees before exhorting the partisan crowd to help him in his tough reelection campaign this year.

Reid made a short speech before heading out to speak at other county conventions going on across the state today.

Candidates for Carson City Board of Supervisors, School Board, Assessor and Sheriff were also on hand to speak to the crowd.

RENO – The three Republican candidates vying to become the next governor of Nevada engaged in a spirited discussion Friday on issues ranging from taxes and public education to the future of Yucca Mountain.

In an automated one-question survey of likely Republican voters conducted for the Nevada News Bureau on April 22 by PMI, Inc., U.S. Senate candidate Sue Lowden earned 41 percent of the vote compared to 24 percent for Danny Tarkanian, 17 percent for Sharron Angle and 18 percent who prefer someone else.
