Submitted by Brett Fisher on Fri, 10/28/2016 - 3:44pmAmidst March snow flakes, officials from Carson City and Q&D Construction dug their shovels into a dirt mound at the intersection of Third and Carson streets nearly eight months ago to break ground on the Downtown Corridor Improvement Project.
Glistening from rain earlier Friday morning, the finished product was unveiled in front of hundreds at a formal ribbon cutting ceremony held in front of the Nevada State Capitol, featuring many of the people who helped to break ground earlier this year.

Well congratulations to the CCCVB. They certainly filled a bunch of hotel rooms this weekend. They also almost completely shut downtown. That’s right, they shut it down. I have been a redevelopment advocate of downtown for almost thirty years and was instrumental in starting up downtown events back in the eighties and nineties. But when we held them we made sure people could come downtown as part of the event.

The candidates participated in a structured debate moderated by Nevada Appeal Editor Adam Trumble.
As a group, they were asked questions on specific topics and each given two minutes to provide a response.

Applications being accepted for Carson City redevelopment facade improvement grants

The grant can be used to make improvements to the exterior of existing commercial buildings, including signs. The grant requires the property owner to pay at least half the cost of the improvements. A total of $200,000 has been allocated to the program.

Our downtown streets are being narrowed and a bike lane added so current and future bicyclists may feel safer as they pedal through our downtown to connect to our many bicycle trails.

The Mayor’s State of the City Address is scheduled for January 20th and should have been held at the Community Center in the evening (after work hours) and “free to the public” — charging citizens’ admission is simply wrong. Also, is the City's State of the State Address televised and available to the citizens to watch on the City’s access channel? Additionally, his fellow Board members should be given a copy of this community address in advance.

The annual event co-sponsored by the Carson City Chamber of Commerce and the Redevelopment Committee brought young and old downtown to watch the Capitol light up.
A Christmas Fair in Telegraph Square featured entertainment by the Carson Middle School Band, the Carson High Chamber Choir, and the Youth Theater Carson City Showstoppers. Craft booths for the kids, vendors, and a roaming Grinch were all a part of the action. Santa’s appearance was the icing on the cake.

Fred Nietz, businessman and Carson City community events organizer, dies

He was 71.

As part of the 26th Annual Silver & Snowflakes Festival of Lights to be held Friday, Dec. 4, children of all ages enrolled in any of Carson City’s schools — whether public or private — are encouraged to submit original drawings to win cash prizes and to be featured on the cover of the Silver & Snowflakes special edition published by the Nevada Appeal. Winning art will be on display at the library until after the new year.
