Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval signed 12 bills into law on Thursday including a statewide broadband modernization effort, an act requiring bodycams on most law enforcement officers, and a bill to make it easier to transition to State service from internship and student programs. The governor also vetoed 7 measures.

With a record mountain snowpack changing to a robust, above normal, significant fire potential, wildland firefighting agencies are gearing up for another fire season and the University of Nevada, Reno is ramping up its AlertTahoe HD/4K fire camera system, which overlooks and helps protect dozens of western mountain ranges and hundreds of square miles of Nevada’s Great Basin.

Memorial Day weekend is the traditional kickoff to boating season in Northern Nevada, and game wardens at the Nevada Department of Wildlife are urging boaters to take extra precautions before going on the water.

The Nevada Assembly on Monday recognized Lynn Hettrick, Nevada Department of Agriculture Plant Industry administrator and former Assembly member, as a new addition to its Wall of Distinction.

(Reno, Nev.) – Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval’s former deputy chief of staff, Ann Wilkinson, has been named the new National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges’ (NCJFCJ) director of human resources.

Most recently, Wilkinson served Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval’s administration as an agency executive and as a senior advisor. In her role as deputy chief of staff, Wilkinson’s work focused on healthcare policy and serving as the Governor’s liaison on health and human service initiatives.

Sean Slamon was sworn in Friday as Carson City's new fire chief at the Carson City Fire Department Station 51 administration building on Stewart Street.

John Corbitt, a Pioneer High School teacher, and his math students applied for a grant with Samsung during the first semester of this school year. The school was recently notified that their application was one of the five school finalists in the State of Nevada.

Three magnitude 5.5 to 5.7 earthquakes struck about 18 miles southwest of Hawthorne, Nevada just after midnight Wednesday December 28, 2016, the Nevada Seismological Laboratory at the University of Nevada, Reno reported. Reports so far indicate minimal damage due to the remote nature of the earthquake sequence.

Lyon County, Nevada – Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties recently welcomed ten AmeriCorps members who will serve communities throughout the Lyon County region during the 2016-2017 fiscal year. More than 500 Carson High School seniors packed the bleachers on the big gym’s south end Thursday afternoon to welcome the Nevada Secretary of State’s Office to campus for the coolest civics lesson ever.

UPDATE 7PM: Investigators and vessel inspectors from Coast Guard Sector San Francisco are on the scene of Tuesday's fire on board the 119-foot passenger Lake Tahoe paddle wheel boat, the Tahoe Queen.

"Most of the damage is limited to the boat's pilot house and second deck," Lt. Jake Aulner of the U.S. Coast Guard told South Tahoe Now. "This can be attributed to the great response by the Tahoe Douglas Fire Department."
Aulner and the team from USCG Yerba Buena Island will be at the scene until the cause of the morning blaze is determined.

Carson Tahoe Health held an open house Thursday for its brand-new Breast Center attached to Sierra Surgery Hospital at 1400 Medical Parkway in Carson City.

The Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition has launched a multimedia education campaign to promote safe bicycling for Tahoe visitors and residents.

“We hope these safety tips help ensure people enjoy riding their bicycles at Lake Tahoe,” said Curtis Fong, vice president of the Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition. “This is the greatest and most beautiful place in the world to ride a bike, and we want to help make sure that bicyclists are aware of safe riding practices when bicycling on roadways or bike paths around Lake Tahoe.”

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval has declared July "BEAR Logic Month.” "BEAR” stands for Bear Education, Aversion and Research, and BEAR Logic Month is an opportunity to help educate the public about living in bear country.

The Nevada State Railroad Museum and its restoration team were honored with Carson City’s 2016 Historic Preservation Award presented at the board of supervisors meeting Thursday. The award recognizes decades of accumulated public service in the preservation, restoration and celebration of Nevada’s railroad heritage, centered on the recent completion of the Glenbrook steam locomotive project.

The Nevada Seismological Laboratory at the University of Nevada, Reno reported a magnitude 3.9 earthquake located near the communities of Gerlach and Empire, about 75 miles north of Reno. The earthquake occurred at 7:20 a.m. on Saturday, May 14, 2016. The magnitude 3.9 is the largest of just over 300 earthquakes that have been located in the area since April 20.

Recently, we’ve been reflecting on our experiences over the past year of public service together and the lessons we’ve learned.

Many of those lessons are unique to the particular functions of the Controller’s Office and include managing the departments of the office. But we also made more topical observations about our experience and how it has helped to shape and refine our views.

East Fork Fire Protection District, serving as Douglas County Emergency Management, provided orientation to 98 individuals from around the county during flood response guide workshops held earlier this month.

CARSON CITY — First responders, fire, law enforcement, and emergency medical services will be first on the scene in an emergency. When additional support is needed to manage an incident state resources are called in to assist. One of the resources ordered by a local jurisdiction may be the National Guard.

More than 17,500 earthquakes were recorded in 2015 by the University of Nevada, Reno’s Nevada Seismological Laboratory. That includes the 231 recent quakes in south Reno and the magnitude 4.8 in Caliente that shook Las Vegas in January 2015.

An earthquake swarm continues to rattle the Reno area today with more than 30 events recorded since Tuesday night, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The largest quake was a 4.4 magnitude recorded at 10:46 p.m. It was felt as far south as Carson City and east into the Dayton area. No serious damage was reported.
The most recent quake had a 1.9 magnitude at 9:26 a.m. Wednesday morning.

In its first entry into the Nevada Press Association‘s annual awards competition the Gold Hill-based Nevada Travel Network was awarded first place in two of the three categories it entered.

The blue ribbon for ‘Best Writing Online’ was awarded to the monthly NevadaGram and First Place in the ‘Best Feature Story Online’ category went to David Toll for “A visit to the Belmont Mill and Hamilton."

All 2,300 Carson High School students will each receive a laptop during the week of Oct. 5-9 to be used at school and at home to enhance their learning opportunities. Beginning Monday at 7:45 a.m. and going throughout the day, all students will go to the library to receive their laptop. This process will be repeated again Tuesday through Thursday.

SACRAMENTO — The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has completed reviewing petitions to list nine species in California and Nevada under the Endangered Species Act and a petition to delist one species.

Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. Typically held during the last week of September, it highlights the value of free and open access to information.

Carson City Library will host a “Virtual Read-Out” during Banned Books Week, bringing together our community in shared support of the freedom to seek and express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular.

Carson City residents gathered Friday in Mills Park with law officers and firefighters to remember the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

The service was held surrounding a I-beam memorial that was given to Carson City in 2010 by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Among the flowers placed on the beam was as an American flag presented to the Carson City Fire Department by Michael Manfredo. The flag was given to the Carson City man by a son of one of the 343 fighters killed at the World Trade Center that day.
