Aug. 18 open house to address open space, parks in Carson River area
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Thu, 08/07/2014 - 2:30pmResidents interested in open space and parks along the Carson River, including Silver Saddle Ranch and the Prison Hill Recreation Area, may want to attend an Aug. 18 open house hosted through the Carson City Parks and Recreation Department.
The event will be in Bonanza Room of the Carson City Community Center, 851 East William Street from 3 to 5:45 p.m. and will include information, maps and draft recommendations from the Management Plan. Written comments are also encouraged.

Care Flight, Carson City Fire Department called to Prison Hill after man falls 30 feet
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Sat, 03/15/2014 - 11:36pmCarson City firefighters and Care Flight responded late Saturday night to the Prison Hill area southeast of Carson City after a 29-year-old man reportedly fell 30 feet.
The man was reported to have a head injury, was bleeding from a laceration, was conscious and awake but not alert.

Carson City Sheriff's Office report details initial arrest that led to recovery of 60 stolen weapons
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Tue, 02/18/2014 - 11:25amMore details have emerged following the arrest Friday of a Dayton man that led to Carson City and Lyon County authorities to recover approximately 60 stolen weapons, a stolen vehicle and narcotics. Three others were also arrested.
Keith Furr, 52, was arrested on charges of being an ex-felon in possession of a firearm, contempt of court and criminal contempt and is being held in Carson City with a bail of $23,500.
Search continues for armed burglary suspect following Monday night car chase
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Mon, 01/27/2014 - 6:22pmUPDATE TUESDAY 9AM: The search continues this morning for a man who led Carson City sheriff's deputies on a vehicle chase near the Prison Hill area. Both detectives and deputies continued the search and the investigation overnight and into this morning.
The suspect allegedly broke into two homes, stole several weapons and other property and fled. A woman walked in on the suspect as he was stealing guns from her home and gave authorities a description of the vehicle the man was seen driving.
Fire at Lake Tahoe's north shore concerns Carson City fire officials as drought persists
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Fri, 01/24/2014 - 4:49pmHours after an early morning fire at Lake Tahoe's north shore chewed about a half-acre on Forest Service land, a man in the Prison Hill area of Carson City lit some paper on fire to warm up and in doing so touched off a small blaze.
With persistent drought conditions and no clear sign of when the next rain and snowfall will be, fire officials say the potential for wildfires is worsening ever day and the public needs to be aware of the danger.
Carson City asks residents to submit names for open space

The two properties are located on Golden Eagle Lane in the southeast area of Carson City, near the southeast corner of the Prison Hill Recreation Area, according to a news release.

Fire crews battle 25-acre Tarnahan wildfire southeast of Carson City
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Wed, 07/03/2013 - 7:10pmUPDATE 4:21PM July 4: The Tarnahan Fire burning southeast of Carson City is 10 percent contained. No structures are threatened at this time. After GPS of the area was made, the fire was downsized at noon to 25 acres, according to Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center. Sierra Front had reported about 100 acres early this morning but re-adjusted the figure based on an overhead GPS reading.

BLM announces adoption of Carson City wild horses; advocates want herd at sanctuary
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Tue, 03/12/2013 - 1:09pmThe Bureau of Land Management will hold an adoption on March 23 for several wild horses recently removed from the outskirts of Carson City. Currently eight wild horses including a mare and foal pair will be available. Meanwhile, advocates for the wild horses say they want the family at a California sanctuary instead of being put up for adoption.
Carson River Cleanup on Saturday

As part of the 19th annual National Public Lands Day, the Carson River Cleanup, hosted by the Kiwanis Club of Carson City and the Bureau of Land Management, will focus on areas around Brunswick Canyon and Prison Hill Recreation area.
To get in on the cleanup, meet at the BLM-Carson City District Office's west parking lot, located at 5665 Morgan Mill Road at Deer Run Road, three blocks south of U.S. Highway 50 on the east side of Carson City along the Carson River, at 8 a.m.
Carson River Cleanup Day

Hikes are where you find them, sometimes at the top of a ski lift
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Fri, 08/26/2011 - 11:07amMost experienced Carson City hikers would probably never consider starting a trip from the beginning of the Heavenly Mountain Resort's Gondola lift in South Lake Tahoe. It's not the most challenging trek around Carson City — you can always do Prison Hill from the river side or the city side and have a good view of Carson City and Slide Mountain. Or dead Man's Creek at Washoe Lake.
