Labor Day commemorates the men and women whose sweat made this such a great country and has been a national holiday since 1894. Celebrate this unofficial end-of-summer with a trip to the lake, a backyard bar-be-que, the parade in Virginia City, or one of the many fun events going on around town. Head over to St. Peter’s Episcopal Church for their annual Inter-faith Potluck Picnic and don’t forget to bring some silverware and something yummy to share.

MONDAY: Labor Day

The great thing about Labor Day weekend is that it just keeps going. The Best in the West Rib Cook-off offers up family fun, live music, and plenty of bar-be-qued delights all the way through Monday. For those with younger kids, consider a day at Mills Park. This is the last weekend for summertime train rides through the cottonwoods. Join Muscle Powered at Silver Saddle Ranch by the Carson River for a bike or hike this morning. Bring water and a camera, you never know what wildlife will make an appearance.

Summer is holding on for dear life, and sending a miniature heat wave our way for this long weekend. For those of you not in Black Rock City, the Carson City region offers plenty of recreation and entertainment. Downtown will be hopping with the Farmers Market, monthly Wine Walk, and this season’s last outdoor concert at the Brewery Arts Center – and that’s just Saturday! Silver City is inviting the public to a free event in the park on Saturday, August 19th. It's a potluck picnic from 5pm-9 pm with live music and some very special programming as well. Organizers say everyone is welcome.

The summer sun offers so many wonderful options: an early morning bike ride, a trip to Virginia City on the historic V and T railroad, or maybe a picnic and some live music in a park. All these and more are available today. Beat the heat with a trip to the movie theater – The Sandlot will take you back in time. The Chili Cook-off and Craft Fair continues at Glen Eagles. More beautiful weather is on its way. If I seem a little excited about a little bit of sunshine, its because I am, especially after this very long, gray, wet winter. Today we celebrate the Arts in Nevada at the Legislature and salute the painters, potters, makers, sculptors, singers, dancers, actors, writers, poets, and musicians that capture all that is Nevada in their work.

A Lakeview community project headed up by a Carson City woman is among five in Northern Nevada to receive funding awards from State Farm in support of activities aimed at reducing potential loss of life, property and natural resources to wildfire in their communities.

Spring break week is winding to a close, and it’s ending on a soggy note. More of the wet stuff is on its way, but don’t let that stand in the way of a good time. Laugh it up with magician and comedian Brad Bonar Jr. at Carson Comedy in the Nugget. Break a leg to the Proscenium Players. Their spring production, ‘Bus Stop,’ opens tonight in the Brewery Arts Center Black Box Theater. The whole family is welcome at the DHS Boosters Bingo Night at Dayton High tonight; help them raise funds for this year’s Safe and Sober Grad Night.

FRIDAY:

Irish eyes are smiling on us: it’s going to be a gorgeous day. You won’t have to look far for some green beer, whiskey, or corned beef – there will be St. Patrick’s Day parties all over. Live music is on the menu, as well. Choose from Men of Worth at the Brewery Arts Center, an all ages punk show at Sassafras, or Stereo Galaxy in the McFadden Plaza, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The brave ones will be at the St. Baldrick Fundraiser at Red’s Old 395 where you’ll see some heads shaved for a good cause. Where ever you end up, just make sure you have a plan to get home safely.

Area you ready for some football? North, south, east, west, or downtown: there’s a good time to be found: drink specials and football squares everywhere. If you couldn’t care less about the Patriot-Falcons match-up, then consider BINGO for CASI or bowling and some Valentine cookie decorating. Music is good for the soul and the Capital City Community Band is just what the doctor ordered. Grab the kids and head to the First Presbyterian Church for a free concert. Get in a bike ride before the wet weather returns: Muscle Powered leaves from Fremont Elementary School at 9 a.m. and also sponsors weekly hikes throughout town. If you’re interested in joining them, their potluck membership meeting this afternoon at the Brewery Arts Center is the perfect time to fill out a membership card.
