Recently, we explained why U.S. Appeals Court Judge Brett Kavanaugh is probably the best person President Donald Trump could have picked for the upcoming Supreme Court opening.

We noted his outstanding record as a lawyer and appellate judge and reviewed his glowing recommendations from legal scholars and colleagues. He’s a good and decent man with outstanding credentials and judicial temperament.

Chautauquan and noted local historian Michael Fischer will portray “Heinrich Friedrich Dangberg, Sr.” in a free presentation at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday, August 4, at 10 a.m.

In 2013, Nevada expanded Medicaid eligibility, a move promoted by the federal Affordable Care Act (ACA or ObamaCare) to improve health care to people allegedly then under-served by our health care systems.

In return, the federal government fully funded Nevada’s increased costs through 2016. However, the federal reimbursements slowly decline beginning this year. With the over-spending problems faced by the federal government, there is serious question whether reimbursements will continue after 2020, and if so at what level.

Our featured guest speaker will be Lee Plemel, the Director of the Carson City Development Department, who will be sharing with us an update on current Carson City projects as well as the vision Carson City government has for upcoming years. Mr. Plemel will also be participating in a Q&A after his presentation.

With its new studio and offices now secured at the historic Adams House on Minnesota Street, Carson City Community Radio KNVC 95.1 may be ready for live broadcasts from the capital city sometime in November or December of this year, station management said Monday.

The importance of diplomacy and ethics in politics will be the topic of Ralph McMullen's program at the next meeting of the Carson City Republican Women's Club. Please join us on Tuesday, October 17, 2017 at the Carson Nugget for lunch and to hear Mr. McMullen's discussion on this subject.

This week's edition of It's Your City with host Cortney Bloomer features TEDx Carson City committee member Garrett Lepire who discusses the upcoming event being held at the Brewery Arts Center. TEDx Carson City is Oct. 13 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the BAC in Carson City.

TEDxCarsonCity is an all day event where engaging speakers from a variety of disciplines share their life's work, passions, and concepts through thought-provoking and entertaining talks that run between 10 to 15 minutes in length. The event combines live talks, TED Talk videos, and opportunities to network and discover unexpected connections and ultimately build community.

The Carson City Republican Women's Club will hold its September meeting on Tuesday, the 19th at the Carson City Nugget. Social time begins at 11:00 a.m. and the meeting is called to order and lunch served at 11:30 a.m.

In our last column, we discussed the Civil Rights movement that hugely changed America in the 20th Century and greatly redeemed the failure of our Founding (allowing slavery) and the Democrat and KKK legacy of bigotry, oppression and discrimination known as Jim Crow.

We pointed out that government, plus the social, economic and political Establishment, was the enforcer of slavery and Jim Crow. And that the reforms overshot their mark, leading to pernicious reverse discrimination that now travels under the euphemism of diversity.

Did you feel that? It wasn’t just the temperature drop or the way everything looked muted outside. Something happened today. It happened without a national disaster or a major annual sporting event. It was a time of national unity. It was a time where we dropped the politics, the fear, and even the concerns of our daily lives. We stood together in the present moment.

Arizona’s United States Senator John McCain has been a difficult Republican for libertarian limited-government conservatives like us to embrace. Often, we stand opposite him on important issues of the day. He is too lacking in overarching principle for our taste. James has called on him to retire and actually sided with his Republican primary opponents in 2010 and 2016.
Yet, today we are sad.

On May the 4th, the House of Representatives passed their version of health care reform (H.R. 1628) without a single hearing or any input from the Democratic minority. The vote was 217 to 213. All 193 Democrats voted no, as did 20 Republicans:
