CARSON CITY — For the fourth consecutive year, Western Nevada College will graduate its largest class in history. The class of 2013 is 505 students strong, with 530 degrees and certificates being issued.

Four students will receive Bachelor of Technology degrees in construction management, and three students will graduate with bachelor’s degrees as part of WNC’s teacher preparation partnership with Nevada State College. The graduates span 60 years, from the youngest at age 17 and the eldest at 77.

UPDATE 11:32AM: Carson City Sheriff's Office deputies, the Nevada Department of Wildlife and Animal Control are looking for a coyote that killed a small dog Friday morning at Mills Park.

Tracking the coyote began at around 10 a.m. after the coyote went after the dog, chased geese and was seen roaming the area around the playground, according to Carson City Sheriff's Office dispatchers. The dog was initially reported as being injured in the attack that happened near the park's train station but subsequently died, according to a report between Carson City patrol officers and dispatchers.

Sometimes it takes a while to get the big picture, to see things coming into focus. Now, I am not much for conspiracy theories, but if anything looks like it is being driven by design, this is one. The theories driving it were formulated many lifetimes ago. The people whose sick minds spawned them are long dead. For the life of me I do not understand how any egomaniac could possibly get his jollies from a trend he might have started but maybe not even his great-grandson might see coming to fruition. Rakes, shovels, wheel barrels, wood chips and wrenches were united with nearly 170 volunteers Saturday in Carson City, pitching in their time to put up new playground equipment at Bordewich Bray Elementary School.

Through the support of the Let Them be Kids organization that awarded the school equipment, along with faculty, staff, students and parents, the playground equipment is designed with all students, especially those with autism.

Through the efforts of hundreds of volunteers, and with the strong support and leadership provided by Let Them Be Kids, Bordewich Bray E.S. in Carson City will build a brand new playground for its Kindergarten area.

With Nov. 16 as its opening day, the countdown is on at Heavenly Mountain Resort. From intense competitions and events to the return of the halfpipe, excitement is stirring at Lake Tahoe’s largest winter playground.

After more than a year in the making, the official opening of Bonanza Park in South Lake Tahoe on Saturday brought community members and families together in celebration of a cooperative public and private agreement made possible by city leaders and Edgewood Companies.

The Lake Tahoe region will celebrates Independence Day holiday with multiple fireworks displays from virtually all points, with the first show set to kick off July 3.

“North Lake Tahoe is unique in that we have a series of fireworks events held throughout the region,” said Chief Marketing Officer Andy Chapman of the North Lake Tahoe Chamber/CVB/Resort Association. “Visitors to the area can take their pick in terms of when and where or enjoy more than one show during their stay.”

Carl Kuhl, a state Parole and Probation employee of six years, has created a plan that he claims will eliminate Nevada's budget deficit within two years.

In a news release issued on Tuesday, Kuhl said his plan not only will reduce the budget deficit but also help repair Nevada's economy at the same time. It is a pretty big claim, he admits, coming from an Accounting Assistant I, an entry level position.

Playgrounds are a pure joy to watch. Children experiment and dream with unbridled optimism. One elementary school in Carson City, by itself, houses over 600 future teachers, healers and leaders. It is a parent’s best dream to envision a bright, healthy, productive future for our children. Sometimes fear overtakes us, as we live with the daily reminders of our world’s very-real threats to those futures. Many of those fears are born of the very-real adult perspectives we have on environmental risks - like crime, drug use and violence.

A 23-year-old Carson City man faces a felony child abuse and a gross domestic battery charge after admitting to abusing a 20-month-old toddler.
David Phillip Gawdun, who lives in the 1700 block of Russell Way, is being held on $43,132 bond in the Carson City Jail after he was arrested on Saturday. In an interview, he has admitted to slapping the girl and other instances of child abuse on the toddler and the girl's 3-year-old brother.

Through syncopated rhythm, men young and old brought their down shovels and hoes onto the weeds, effectively cutting them off from existence. On the other side of the school grounds, women and children were picking up trash, repairing the track circle and supplying everyone with an unconditional amount of pizza and water.

This event was an Eagle Scout Project headed by David McMasters on June 22 to improve Fritsch Elementary School’s track and playground for generations to come.

A Carson City woman and a South Lake Tahoe man were arrested Thursday and face charges including indecent exposure, disorderly conduct and obstruction, after witnesses reported inappropriate behavior at Mills Park near the playground.
Lisa Maria Ferguson, 41, faces charges of gross misdemeanor indecent exposure and misdemeanor disorderly conduct. She is being held on $2,737 bail. Abel Perez Jr., 28, of South Lake Tahoe, faces disorderly conduct and obstruction charges. Both are misdemeanors. His bail was set at $744.

CARSON CITY – Senate Majority Leader Steven Horsford said he is confident a qualified candidate will be found to serve as secretary to the Senate for the 2011 session and that the upper house will continue to be run in a way that serves both the 21 senators and the people of Nevada.
