The 2019 pine nut harvest season kicks off on lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. Both agencies are working together to ensure the public is safely harvesting pine nuts and aware of the regulations. The length of the pine nut harvest season varies depending on crop quality and seasonal weather conditions.

When bad things happen and good people don't respond, worse things happen, and that's just the way of it. Today, while good people sit on their hands, hate crimes continue to drive the numbers of dead and wounded to formerly unimaginable heights.

A 25-year-old Carson City man was arrested on 20 felony charges including burglary, possession of stolen property, burglary with a firearm, possession of instrument with burglarious intent, and removing a firearm’s serial number.

Marco Antonio Covarrubias was arrested in the 1100 block of Ridgefield Drive early Thursday morning after deputies were responding to the area of Pinion Pine Drive on report of a burglary, and the area had recently reported several other burglaries during the past week with similar circumstances.

A 56-year-old Carson City man was arrested Sunday for suspicion of misdemeanor DUI and hit and run after allegedly crashing into a vehicle, flipping off the driver of the vehicle and then driving home, a sheriff's report states.

Heading into Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2019, events around the capital city include a TRIAD presentation for Carson City residents on the new Smart911 system, a discussion of the sheriff's office Mobile Outreach Safety Team at a meeting of the Carson City Republican Women organization, a morning walk, evening hike and a bike ride with Muscle Powered, a Fat Tuesday Business Networking event at J's Bistro in Dayton, family craft night at the library and more.

Red Wing, Minnesota is the cutest town I ever saw. You can't see it without falling in love with it. I wanted to fold it up and take it home with me. They make shoes there, comfortable, sensible shoes. I was reminded of what my mother told me, "Honey, always have a good pair of shoes and a good bed, 'cuz you're either in one or the other."

Carson City is a very special place and, as the city continues to grow and prosper, many are looking to relocate here for a myriad of reasons.

Through the years, Carson City has changed. There have been good times and there have been times that, as Thomas Paine wrote, “have tried men’s souls.” We’ve lost some historic and iconic structures but have bounced back in the good times. The biggest recent changes occurred in 2016 with the reimagining of the downtown core that continues today.

The river life is a good life. Mississippi River life is as good as it gets, and when you're pretending to be Mark Twain it gets even better, as you become the one and only unfettered monarch in America, no matter what anybody else says. And fun? As Huckleberry might like to say, "I reckon not."

Tragedy struck during the annual Lake Tahoe Marathon on August 24 when a 64-year-old El Dorado Hills man died during the swimming portion of the race near Sugar Pine Point.

Heading into Labor Day weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next four days, which include guided tours at the Nevada State Museum, movie showings at Mills and Schulz Ranch Park, a school supply car cruise and Bingo fundraiser at the Carson Mall, trash pickup at Lake Tahoe, a Rolling Stones tribute band at Carson Nugget, Virginia City’s Labor Day Parade and more!

Join Muscle Powered on the last Saturday in August for a beautiful hike to Marlette Lake. The hike begins from the Spooner Lake parking lot, travels north on North Canyon Road, and continues onto the single-track trail north to Marlette Lake.

I fell in love last November with some ducks who marched in perfect procession down a red carpet to a fountain in the lobby of the Peabody Hotel in Memphis, and jumped in. They do it every day, and have been doing it for 85 years. To see it, well, it's enough to make an ogre smile.

The Nevada Department of Agriculture Animal Disease Laboratory has confirmed eight positive rabies cases in bats in Lyon, Washoe, White Pine, Clark and Elko counties. Rabies is common in bats throughout Nevada, and bat activity tends to increase between the months of May and October.

While in a wistful mood of late, I've been listening to the music of Miss Dinah Washington, who was on her seventh husband when she died of an overdose of alcohol and weight reduction pills at age 39, so young.

Shepherd of the Sierra Lutheran Church in Carson City donated proceeds raised from community rummage sale to Carson City Search and Rescue to support the replacement of an aging search and rescue vehicle. A generous donation in the amount of $3,147.25 was presented on July 24, which will join funds already raised for the vehicle purchase.

CARSON CITY — Statewide, jobs increased by 3.3 percent, a gain of 45,500 new jobs added since June of last year and the fastest growth in the nation for the 9th consecutive month, according to the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation’s June 2019 local area economic report released Tuesday.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office Investigation Division is asking for assistance in identifying a credit card fraud suspect.

While waiting in line for a lift ticket this past winter I passed the time by whistling, "Born to Lose." I don't know why I was whistling that particular Ray Charles song, though I'm sure a psychiatrist could tell me. Be that as it may, a mother and young son were walking by when the little guy asked, "Mom, why is that man whistling?"

"Because he's happy, Honey," she answered with a smile.
