Sierra Le Bone, a boutique for dogs and cats as well as their owners, will celebrate their grand opening Friday and Saturday at their new location at 880 South Stewart Street, across from the fire station.

The business moved in October from their previous location in the Raley's Center, and co-owner Jan McMinn said they are very happy in their new place. Even though their old store was just a few yards off busy South Carson Street, they had trouble converting that traffic to customers as other businesses in the same building began closing their doors.

The winter holidays are a time for celebration with family and friends, and that means more cooking, entertaining, home decorating and an increased risk of home fires due to increased usage of cooking and heating equipment. Most home fires and injuries occur in the kitchen as reported by the U.S. Fire Administration. Authorities are still on the lookout for a mountain lion that chased after a jogger yesterday on Kings Canyon Road. Residents are warned to keep an eye out for the big cat, and to keep close tabs on children and pets. KOLO8 has this video report:

Update: The Nevada Appeal has a story quoting Chris Healy from Nevada Department of Wildlife that they have been looking but have not seen the big cat since the jogger reported it on Monday.

Carson City has issued a warning about a mountain lion that was seen today in the area of King Street and Ormsby Boulevard, near Carson Middle School.

"Please use caution and keep children and pets under close supervision at all times," the warning reads.

A jogger on Kings Canyon Road reported that a mountain lion was chasing after him, coming down the hill towards him. He reported crossing the street with vehicle traffic and the cat didn't follow.

If the lion is spotted, the city is asking you to call 911.

Here are some tips about what to do if you see a mountain lion. The key thing is don't run away.

Two trends could make Halloween a treat for Nevada retailers this year.

The National Retail Federation (“NRF”) estimates 68.6 percent of Americans 18 years and older will celebrate Halloween this year, the most in the NRF’s survey history.  Additionally, those celebrating are expected to spend approximately $72.31 on decorations, costumes, candy and other holiday items, up $6.03 from the $66.28 reported last year.
Assuming national trends aren’t playing tricks on Nevada, 1.4 million residents 18 years and older will spend money on the spooky holiday this year. If each Nevadan celebrating the holiday spends the expected average of $72.31, total spending in the state will reach $99 million.
The current year estimate represents an increase of 17.3 percent compared to last year when an estimated 63.8 percent of the population celebrated the holiday, spending $66.28 on average.

First time I went to Burning Man on the Black Rock playa, I slept in my SUV. Not bad but second and third it was in my tent, a very gritty and uncomfortable week. The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit invites residents and visitors to attend the Kokanee Salmon Festival, which celebrates the annual fall migration of Kokanee salmon at the Taylor Creek Visitor Center. The event takes place the weekend of October 1 and 2, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. each day. The Visitor Center is located three miles north of South Lake Tahoe on Highway 89.

A bat in Carson City has tested positive for rabies, according to Carson City Health and Human Services. There is NO known human exposure to the bat. Rabies is a deadly viral disease that affects the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord). People get rabies from the bite of an animal with rabies. You can also be exposed to rabies if infected saliva or tissue containing rabies gets into a fresh wound (one that has bled within 24 hours) or the eyes, nose or mouth.

CARSON CITY — An evacuation and sheltering exercise for the residents of the Old Clear Creek Road subdivision will be from noon to 4 p.m. on May 2, Carson City Fire Department officials announced today.

The evacuation drill in the southwest part of Carson City is being carried out in conjunction with Nevada’s 5th Annual Wildfire Awareness Week. A California man wanted on a felony fugitive warrant was arrested Saturday by Carson City deputies after he allegedly head-butted a hotel manager when he was informed that pets weren't allowed in rooms.

The victim told sheriff deputies that he approached the suspect after seeing a dog in the room. The suspect began to yell at the victim and got within a few inches of his face, and then, struck him in the face with his forehead, according to the arrest report.
