Letter to the Editor: Schmidt vs. Kieckhefer in SD16 — an easy choice

Fortunately for us, both men have a long record. Gary Schmidt has been an outspoken conservative on every issue for several decades. Like me, Gary Schmidt is a Goldwater / Reagan / Trump Republican. On the other hand, the NPRI rated incumbent state senator Ben Kieckhefer as the most liberal Republican over four sessions of the legislature.

An invitation for public comment

This is in reference to the development called The Vintage At Kings Canyon, which was announced to the public at the Fritsch School on April 7, and which has been much discussed in the Appeal and CarsonNow.

The details of the plan, as announced, can be found on the website

A report on the April 25 meeting on The Vintage At Kings Canyon

The project called The Vintage At Kings Canyon was presented by the managers in an open meeting at the Fritsch School on April 7th to a crowd estimated at 250-400 people.

On April 25 it was again the topic of another public meeting at the school. This time the meeting was called by the neighbors, and drew over 200 highly interested people, along with the mayor, two candidates for mayor, a supervisor, a candidate for supervisor, a reporter, a retired reporter, and other retired reporter also a candidate for supervisor.

K-12 education standards through the looking glass

In a previous CarsonNow comment, Carson GOP Chair Maurice White called for Dr. Steve Canavero of the Nevada Department of Education to "be immediately dismissed for his public disrespectful conduct."

Now Peter Hennessey is calling James Milgram and Sandra Stotsky "widely known and respected experts on eduction standards."

It's time for a real Common Core symposium

Peter Hennessey, Ann Bedarski, Sandra Stotsky, James Milgram and the other anti-Common Core activists in attendance at PK O'Neill's symposium Tuesday night were there to stage a demonstration against the K-12 standards, which, it should be remembered, were adopted unanimously by the state board of education four years ago and enthusiastically signed off on by the Governor Gibbons.

Reply to Peter (good grief...!) Hennessey

I can't help but agree with Peter Hennessey when he says he sees a "deep, irreconcilable mental and psychological divide between the two Parties (sic)." That is manifestly the case.

In 2010 I volunteered for Rory Reid's campaign and made the mistake of mentioning that I had been a registered Republican for 34 years. Predictably I was given a list of supposedly "persuadable" Republicans to canvas, which I dutifully did.

Reply to Peter Hennessey

Peter Hennessey seems to have trouble with the word Democratic. Sadly he's not alone in that. It's an affliction that's been going around on the extreme right since the days of Joseph McCarthy. Please note that I'm talking about the extreme right, not the Republican party of the past, which once had a perfectly sane and civic-minded mainstream. I was a registered Republican myself for 34 years, but never had any trouble understanding that Democrat is a noun and Democratic is an adjective. I only have a bachelor's degree, but have no trouble distinguishing between nouns and adjectives.

Investigate the Bundy Ranch Incident

The following is 200 words, precisely at the limit for a letter to the editor of a newspaper. PLEASE FEEL FREE TO USE IT.

Dear Governor,
US Senators and Congressmen,
State Senators and Assemblymen,

Please launch a full investigation of the Bundy Ranch incident last week.

Open Letter To Gov. Sandoval RE: Common Core

Dear Governor,

There is no reason why YOU should feel any attachment to Common Core (CCSS). It was an "Every Child Left Behind" and a "Race To The Bottom" application, initiated by the former school chief and revised by the former Governor, which committed Nevada to adopt CCSS. The Legislature followed with bills in 2011 and 2013, none of which specified CCSS. It was the bureaucracy that chose to do that. The NRS, and bills such as AB288, only call for new standards and tests, without ever mentioning or unambiguously prescribing CCSS or SBAC.

Do something in 2014; rekindle the spirit of 1776

The descendants of Jefferson's Democratic Republicans are the conservatives and the TEA Party. The descendants of Hamilton's Federalists are the big-government "progressive" establishment Republicans. Today's Democrats are descendants of Karl Marx.

You can curse the darkness, or light a candle.

You can curse the darkness, or light a candle.

You can complain about politics and politicians, or you can participate in defining the
issues and getting them enacted; selecting your candidates and getting them elected.
The key word is PARTICIPATE.

The Carson City Republican Central Committee gives you several opportunities to
participate in whatever way you like. Just remember that nothing gets done unless
people get down to doing it.

Stop cursing the darkness. Light a candle. In these strange times it is not an

A petition with respect to Common Core

This is a plea to the readers of this great news site to educate themselves about the Common Core "State" Standards being implemented in our schools, and to join with the growing numbers of parents and concerned citizens who seek to reverse course and do something better before it's too late for our children and grandchildren.

Letter: CC #1: Real life experience with a new library

My mother taught me that only a foolish man insists on learning from his own mistakes at his own expense; a wise man learns from the mistakes of others. In that spirit, I am grateful to friends who sent me this link:

Supporters. "naysayers" and fence-sitters alike, please PLEASE read this article. I am not going to insult you by paraphrasing it here. Just let it be enlightening and fair warning before you vote.

Thank you!

CC #1 -- The Same Old Point Of View

A previous letter (by Janice Ayers) has presented no new arguments FOR the KDC project, and failed to address the arguments made by people such as I and others who are against it. Instead, she engages in a childish ad hominem attack. That is exactly what I got in response to my first letter on this topic.

Letter: CC #1 — we got it on the ballot; now it's time to defeat it

From the Carson City sample ballot for the general election on November 6:

Question CC1.

"Shall Carson City, Nevada, be authorized to impose an additional sales tax of up to ¼ of 1 percent pursuant to NRS Chapter 377A to finance the design, construction, and maintenance of a library and public plaza park in the downtown on lands donated by the Hop and Mae Adams Foundation?"

Where to begin....
