The opening line to Charles Dickens' “A Tale of Two Cities” is a fitting description of Sept. 11, 2001.

That fated Tuesday and the days immediately following it truly were, for those of us who witnessed the events unfold, altogether the worst of times and the best of times.

On the same day, we watched two jetliners burst into fireballs after striking both towers of the World Trade Center in Manhattan and dozens of heroic first responders run toward danger, putting themselves courageously in harm’s way to rescue people trapped inside.

As we go forward and move ahead into Tuesday, July 2, 2019 we're looking at another sunny day, all the better as we prepare to celebrate Independence Day. Are you ready for July 4 fireworks at Mills Park? As a Tuesday warmup, get the heart pumping during Muscle Powered's three fitness outings. Plus there's art showings, hands-on science activities in Silver City, an evening archery shoot, a viewing of the 1953 film "From Here to Eternity" at the Brewery Arts Center hosted by the Carson City Classic Cinema Club and more. Robert C. Gray, 97, of Orinda, California passed away peacefully at home April 3, 2019. Robert was born in Oakland, California to Harry E. Gray and Kathleen S. Carter on August 13, 1921.

Robert was kind, energetic and lived a full life. He was an advanced stamp collector and in 1935 he attended the first Boy Scout National Jamboree at Washington D.C.

Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor, as well as the pursuit of immortality, will be featured during a pair of upcoming presentations at Western Nevada College’s Jack C. Davis Observatory in Carson City.

Over his more than 60-year career as a custom bow maker, or bowyer, Tim Meigs, 89, made more than 9,000 custom bows for archers around the world.

He ended his career at the top of his field, but he got off to an inauspicious start.

The United States Army and World War II veteran celebrated her 100th birthday Saturday at home with her son, Greg, and a special home-made chocolate cake commemorating the occasion.

Anyone who thinks the 2007 to 2014 economic downturn was a big deal, the 1929 to 1941 Great Recession was an economic tsunami. Most male high school graduates who had celebrated their 18th birthday enlisted in one of the branches of our armed forces. Why? Because there would be one less mouth to feed.

Frigid arctic air brought shivers to the crowd encircling the U.S.S. Nevada memorial Wednesday morning behind the Capitol during the state's remembrance of the Pearl Harbor attacks that occurred 75 years ago.

The morning of Dec. 7, 1941 started out for many Americans about the same as any other Sunday.

Households rose at dawn to feed the stock, catch the morning paper riding by, prepare a hearty breakfast and get ready for church services. By the end of the day, though, the nation and the world would be changed forever.

75 years ago, the USS Nevada was one of the battleships trapped when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. She was the only battleship to get underway during the attack, and according to Naval historian Kermit (Kit) H. Bonner the ship was "the only bright spot in an otherwise dismal and depressing morning" for the United States. Today we remember those lost in that attack, and remember the history behind the battleship that is our battle born namesake. A special exhibit of USS Nevada artifacts, and a lecture on her history are free for all at the State Museum at 1 p.m.

Please join on us to honor our Veterans and commemorate the 75th Anniversary of Pearl Harbor at two special events this Wednesday. There will be a special ceremony at 10:51 a.m. conducted by the USS Nevada Memorial, Lt. Gov. Mark Hutchison and Carson City Mayor Robert Crowell to honor and acknowledge the contributions of the USS Nevada and her crew, raise the American flag, and solemnly read off the names of the 76 crewman who perished during Pearl Harbor. The ceremony will be held at the Capitol Grounds in Carson City, at the USS Nevada Memorial.

At 8:51 AM on December 7th, 1941, The USS Nevada got underway to face a Japanese onslaught at Pearl Harbor. Later dubbed by President Roosevelt as "a day that will live in infamy," the USS Nevada was the only American battleship to get underway during the assault. Still, she was beached during the attack after sustaining six bomb strikes and a direct hit from a torpedo.

Today is the last day to catch a ride on a World War II-era B-25 at Carson City Airport, beginning at 9 a.m. The historic B-25 “Mitchell” named “Executive Sweet” will be parked in front of the airport’s terminal building and rides are available.

The USNS Carson City, the US Navy’s newest Expeditionary Fast Transport Vehicle christened in January, completed acceptance trials in the Gulf of Mexico this week. The Carson City will be formally turned over the US Navy on June 24, 2016.

The recent traitorous attempt by President Obama to rewrite the history of America's war against Japanese imperialism, ignores the lessons of history. Obama displays the perspective of a typical truth impaired, ignorant, partially educated, affirmative action, indoctrinated college student lacking basic knowledge of philosophy, economics and history.

It came to life in 1916, survived the attacks at Pearl Harbor and produced the first recipient of the Medal of Honor for World War II. Honoring the 100th anniversary of the commissioning of the battleship USS Nevada, the Nevada State Museum, Carson City, presents a lecture by Reno Judge Chuck Weller from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 24.

Her final resting place may lie somewhere at the bottom of the South Pacific Ocean, but the U.S.S. Nevada BB-36 will always have a memorial home here in Nevada's capital.

Two years ago, her memory was honored at the State Capitol with a plaque that commemorated the centennial of her initial launching.

Today, The Nevada was honored again on the State Capitol grounds with a second plaque commemorating the 100th anniversary of her completion and U.S. Navy commissioning.

The U.S. Navy christened its newest fast-transport ship, the USNS Carson City EPF-7 at a ceremony Saturday in Mobile, Alabama. Susan Asbury Crowell, wife of Carson City Mayor Robert Crowell, and sponsor of the ship, officially introduced it with a bottle of champagne during the ceremony, which also featured Nevada Congressman Mark Amodei.

The adage says it takes a village to raise a child, but this week northern Nevada proved that it takes more than a city to care for its citizens.

World War II veteran Frank Minervini is celebrating his 103rd birthday with much needed dental work provided by Randy Wright, DDS at Advanced Dentistry by Design in Carson City after a series of communications that began with a single email to Assemblyman P.K. O’Neill, who represents District 40 including Carson City and parts of Washoe County.

As fathers, we teach our children to assume most folks are good and to begin relationships by extending respect, friendship and generosity unless they have clear reasons to do otherwise. As relationships progress, they should respond to others in ways reflecting the accumulated mix of good and bad a person has demonstrated.

About 70 Naval Jr. ROTC students and others had the honor and privileges of listening to a World War II veteran speak at Carson High School on Thursday. Charles Sehe, now 92, was a teenaged sailor on the USS Nevada when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor during World War II.

With the help of a group of local residents, U.S. Navy veteran Charles Sehe was flown out Wednesday morning to be honored for his service, while aboard the USS Nevada battleship during the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Sehe is one of the few veterans still alive today from WWII who served on the USS Nevada. And today the 92-year-old rang the actual bell that was on the battleship he served.

Carson City residents gathered Friday in Mills Park with law officers and firefighters to remember the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

The service was held surrounding a I-beam memorial that was given to Carson City in 2010 by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Among the flowers placed on the beam was as an American flag presented to the Carson City Fire Department by Michael Manfredo. The flag was given to the Carson City man by a son of one of the 343 fighters killed at the World Trade Center that day.

The Capital City Arts Initiative announces its exhibition, The Driest State: Nevada Watersheds, by artist Nolan Preece at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery now through May 28, 2015. The Courthouse is located at 885 E Musser Street, Carson City. The exhibition is free and the public is cordially invited. The gallery is open to the public Monday – Friday, 8am – 5pm.

Cowboy boots are not required if you want to get in on the country line dance lessons at Carson Lanes. If you’re a musician, the Carson City Symphony is looking for violinists and French horn players to join them at their rehearsals.
