A returning favorite event is the Kite Flying Weekend on Saturday, May 13 and Sunday, May 14 from 10am until 3pm both days. Cameron and Reina Kauffman of Coolkiter.com will bring their assortment of big and beautiful kites, kites for high wind and kites for no wind.

Something in the Wind, a free kite flying event, will take place at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday and Sunday, May 15-16. The 20th Annual Snowshoe Thompson Ski & Snowshoe Celebration returns once again to the Sierra on Saturday, March 7 at 9:00 am, at the Lake Tahoe Golf Course in South Lake Tahoe.

Snow or no snow, event activities begin with a guided tour starting at 9:30 am with Norwegian native and longboard ski expert Nina MacLeod, who will also give a longboard ski demonstration if sufficient snow is present. Attendees should bring their own snowshoes and cross country skis.

August continues with a Chautauqua presentation of Mary McNair Mathews and a presentation by author Brooke Santina at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park.

Thick smoke from the Ferguson Fire near Yosemite National Park returned Friday to western Nevada and is affecting air quality in Carson City, Carson Valley, Lyon County and the Lake Tahoe Basin, according to the National Weather Service.

UPDATE 2:58PM: Carson City's air quality worsened Wednesday afternoon to "Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups" with an Air Quality Index measure now at 115.
Sensitive groups include people with lung disease such as asthma, older adults, children and teenagers, and people who are active outdoors. People who fall in this group should reduce prolonged or heavy outdoor exertion.

Linda Javitch Furbee was born on December 2, 1947 in Los Angeles, California to her parents, Pauline and Harry Javitch. She is survived by her husband, Stephen Nicholas, and about a million friends, and colleagues, including the many people she helped on their journeys in her various roles in the community. She died of issues related to metastatic breast cancer on June 21, at 3:07 a.m. the exact minute the Summer Solstice began.

The 18th Annual Snowshoe Thompson Ski & Snowshoe Celebration returns to the Sierras on Saturday, February 24 at 9:00 am, at the Lake Tahoe Golf Course in South Lake Tahoe.

Event activities begin with a guided, interactive historical reenactment tour over the snow, starting at 9:00 am with “Snowshoe Thompson” portrayed by Chautauquan Steve Hale. Attendees may bring their own snowshoes and cross country skis, or rent snowshoes from the Lake Tahoe Golf Course at a special price of $15.

The annual Carson River cleanup event is scheduled for this Saturday, Sept. 17, from 8 am until noon. Volunteers should check in at the Silver Saddle Ranch by 8 a.m. and bring a hat, sunblock, gloves, long sleeve pants and shirts.
