Nevada state lawyers: Law bans extra set of local rules for Uber

State lawyers say local governments can't deny a business license to ride-hailing companies if they've met all the other requirements that apply to businesses in general.

The Legislative Counsel Bureau released the legal opinion Friday. It comes as Clark County officials work to amend their business license ordinance to create a special category for companies like Uber and Lyft.

Legislative counsel to Clark County: You can't slow down Uber

The cabs have hired lobbyists (again), and some commissioners think they can slow Uber through the business licensing process.
But, Legislative Counsel Brenda Erdoes says, you can't. Check out her opinion below, requested by Uber backer Michael Roberson, that says the county can't put any special re...

Column: Deep Thoughts, Cheap Shots and Bonbons

Are you having panic attacks, doubts, concerns or uncertainty, topped off with a sense of skepticism about the narrowing of Carson Street? If so, surprise, you are in the majority.

Know this, the project will go forward. Why? Because, the 1/8 of a cent sales tax that will fund the Downtown Carson City project had been approved by the Board of Supervisors with a 4 to 1 vote.

Carson Tahoe Health, Huntsman Cancer Institute to expand options for cancer patients

Gaining access to world-class cancer care just got easier for Northern Nevadans. A new alliance is bringing state-of-the-art treatment for rare and complicated cancers, expanded avenues to clinical trials, and expert second opinions to the community’s doorstep.

Mental health is Nevada’s albatross

During this year’s legislative session, my wife and I approached our state legislators about resources for Nevada’s most underserved population: The mentally ill.
There is a health crisis in our state, one which has grown into an epidemic across the nation, but one that is especially endemic right here in the Silver State.
Having lived more than twelve years in a state that seems to cater to many human vices, this comes as no surprise to me.

Carson City short film competition screening tonight at Brewery Arts Center

Tonight, Saturday, is the third annual City Wide Short Film Competition. In its third year we have 17 teams creating a short 1 to 10 minute film in the space of one week.

The community is invited to attend the showing and watch how the participants added three ingredients to each of their films. Teams could select from 4 genres but each must use the same three ingredients, a prop, sound effect and line of dialog, ensuring the film was made for this competition and into the last week of production.

Supervisor Jim Shirk Column: Deep Thoughts, Cheap Shots and Bonbons

Doing the right thing is not determined because one consistently votes with the majority. One should always vote on the principle of what is right and fair. A vote may be a lone vote, if so, just say and repeat as needed: You can't break me. I don't have a breaking point.

From the Board of Supervisors meeting held on July 16. Agenda item No. 11. This item dealt with directing staff to examine the feasibility of Carson City joining the Nevada League of Cities (NLC). This is somewhat problematic, how could any Board member not consent and give the go-ahead to a feasibility study?

Column: Even man’s best friend needs rehab

It was 10 p.m. on a temperate winter evening in early February three years ago when my best friend suffered a grand mal seizure. I rushed her to the hospital, and waited. And waited. And waited some more.

Then the doctor came out and informed me that she felt my friend had a brain tumor causing the seizure, because my friend was not responding to the anti-epileptic medication administered to her. The doctor said the only way to be sure was a three thousand dollar CT scan or MRI.

Even man’s best friend needs rehab

It was ten o’clock at night on a temperate winter evening in early February three years ago when my best friend suffered a grand mal seizure.

Series: What Employers Need to Know about Pregnancy Discrimination

On March 25, 2015, the United States Supreme Court delivered its opinion on a case relating to treatment of pregnant workers that is of interest to businesses. In Young v. United Parcel Service, Inc., 575 U.S. ___ (2015), the Court evaluated the requirements for bringing a disparate (discrimination) treatment claim under the Pregnancy Discrimination Act.

Opinion: Time to set the colleges free

The governor, legislature, Board of Regents, and Nevada System of Higher Education deserve to be commended for working to improve education in Nevada during the 2015 legislative session.

However, for months we have looked on with concern about our state's economic future and that of our students. Simply, the recently revised funding formula, with a goal of rectifying inequities between the two universities, has created budgetary chaos for the state's four community colleges.

Nevada Humane Society board pledges $225,000 for new Carson City animal shelter

The Nevada Humane Society board of directors have agreed to raise $225,000 for a new animal shelter to be built in Carson City, officials said ahead of Thursday's meeting of the Carson City Board of Supervisors.

Supervisors will consider additional funding for the proposed new shelter project that is set to replace the current, aging facility. In a news release sent Wednesday, the Humane Society notes the funding gap regarding anticipated costs and said it will raise money to help defray some of the costs.

Graham's Word: WNC Making Huge Mistake by Letting Athletics Walk

It will be a HUGE mistake by Western Nevada College if they allow the athletic programs to walk. Period. I have kept a low profile in this just mainly to sit back and observe what is going to happen. Now, I’m coming off the sidelines to express my opinion.

The college is doing this to save money and I do sympathize with them in that regard but, they are not looking at what the college AND the city will lose if the programs are gone. The loss of money to the city and college far outweighs the money that would be saved.

Science of climate change is convoluted!

Mr. Bush, we have some folks you can to talk to about climate change

By Mark Reynolds

It makes me nervous when someone who might become president of the United States says the science on climate change is “convoluted” and that it is “arrogant” to assert that humans are the primary cause of global warming.

That’s what happened recently when Jeb Bush, the still-undeclared presidential candidate, said the following at a campaign-style event in New Hampshire:

Sign erected and destroyed in Silver City

Early in the week of May 3, persons unknown erected a sign near the junction of Main Street, Silver City (Highway 342), with the Truck Route (Highway 341) blaming Comstock Mining Inc., the Storey County Commissioners and the Nevada Department of Transportation for the closure of the highway (342) between Silver City and Gold Hill. Before dawn of the third day afterward, the sign had been obliterated and removed by a second party of persons unknown.

Friday, May 8: Things to do in Carson City

Event Date:
May 8, 2015 (All day)

Breakfast is such a great way to start out the day, and local favorite, the Cracker Box, has been serving it up for 35 years. Join Supervisor Brad Bonokowski for his monthly meeting with residents, or wait until 9am for a short presentation from the Mayor honoring the restaurant. Their lunch menu is delicious, as well, but you may want to join Supervisor Karen Abowd during her monthly walkabout of Mills Park instead. It’s a good day to connect with our local leaders! If you’ve driven down Williams St., you’ve seen the RSVP Spring Festival and Carnival. It will be there all weekend, so you’ve got a few days to indulge in cotton candy and fried twinkees.

FRIDAY:

  • Monthly Breakfast with Supervisor Brad Bonokowski at the Cracker Box (7:30am; open to Carson City residents, the coffee is on Brad)
  • CCAI Exhibit: BRIC Art 5 at the BRIC: 108 E Proctor Street (8am-12pm and 1pm-5pm)

Tax Tips and Other Stuff: Dumb Tax Laws Passed by Congress

Our Congress is broken. It's dysfunctional. It's confused. It's Illogical. I know. "It is all the other Senators and Congressmen and women's fault, not mine." WRONG! Well folks, all I can say is check their voting record, not what they say in speeches. It doesn't matter if Congress is dominated by Democrats or Republicans. Here are some examples of their stupidity.

California End of Life Option bill similar to proposed Nevada 'right to die' legislation

Nevada lawmakers will soon take up right to die legislation, just as California lawmakers are also doing, with a bill having passed through a state senate committee vote last month.

The committee on health cleared the California End of Life Option Act, March 25 on a vote of 6-2. The legislation is closely modeled on Oregon’s Death with Dignity legislation, allowing a terminally ill individual with six months or less to live the right to request and receive a prescription medication to hasten death in certain narrow circumstances.
