Here is this week’s Carson City area road report for the week of May 9-15, 2016: Work continues on the Downtown Corridor improvement project on Carson Street. Motorists can expect the following impacts this week:

A lot of people are asking themselves and the society in which we live this question hours after a fatal mass killing at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon.

I’m a native Oregonian, born and raised just an hour or two north of Roseburg. My parents called this mill city, situated between the North and South branches of the Umpqua River, home for a few years a decade back. I know the area fairly well. One of my favorite places to visit was Wildlife Safari just a few miles down the road in Winston.

Some additional but seldom considered facts about the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings in Newtown Connecticut are important if we wish to protect the children rather than demagogue the issue. The following two links can provide insight into the problem while ignoring the campaign slogans and political posturing. We need to start acting like men instead and assume the responsibility that all men have to protect innocent life. Children die when grown men act like children, instead of men.

Thirteen months ago, Adam Lanza entered Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut and killed twenty students and six members of the school’s staff. Earlier, Lanza shot and killed his mother before driving to the school on his deadly mission. His death at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head ended the brutal killing spree. In the days following the horrific event, calls for sane gun control from a variety of sectors of our society were heard across the country.

Nevada Sen. Harry Reid said Wednesday on the floor of the U.S. Senate that he supports an assault weapons ban, limits on high-capacity ammunition clips and polices to improve access to mental health services. He spoke of mass shootings that have happened across the country and close to home in Carson City.

"As the case of the Carson City, Nevada IHOP tragedy reveals, the deficiencies in this nation’s mental health treatment system are another important part of the discussion about how to prevent gun violence," Reid said on the Senate floor. "We have simply not done a good job of providing funding for and access to mental health services. We have also done a poor job of removing the stigma that keeps many Americas from seeking the treatment they need."

A mass shooting took place less than two years ago in Carson City’s IHOP restaurant, just down the road from the Nevada Legislature.
Since that day in September 2011, more senseless mass shootings have occurred in the United States — the one in Newtown, Conn., sparking a nationwide debate over gun control.

The Carson City Symphony Association presents the Carson Chamber Singers in a pair of concerts dedicated to victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in December. The first concert will be on Friday, March 8, at 7:00 p.m., at the First United Methodist Church, 212 N. Division Street, Carson City. The second will be on Sunday, March 10, at 5:00 p.m., at Trinity Episcopal Church, 200 Island Avenue, Reno. General admission is $10, free for youth age 16 and under.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is a gun man, always has been.
And although the Nevada native has welcomed the call by President Barack Obama to respond to the Newtown, Conn., massacre with action, Reid has yet to endorse — or even utter the phrase — “gun control.”

The horrific details of Friday's shooting in Newtown, Connecticut are hitting close to home including those in Carson City, who gathered Saturday for prayer outside the Nevada State Capitol.

The shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut has claimed the lives of 26 people, 20 of them children. This is a tragedy that has gained national attention and has wrenched the hearts of Carson City residents. Saturday night, December 15, as the sun sets at 6:00 p.m., members of the Carson City business community will be hosting a candlelight vigil on the sidewalk of the Nevada State Capitol building, located at 101 North Carson Street.

Certainly there are things in this world that are bigger than sports. Unfortunately, today in Newtown, Connecticut a shooting at an elementary school has happened. It is unthinkable and unimaginable. My thoughts and prayers go out to all of those affected by this horrific tragedy.

In today’s world we ask ourselves over and over again why, and more often than not, we never seem to find the answers.

I hope that we all come together at this time for the victims of this tragedy. Please hug and hold close your loved ones every chance you get. Today is a day of mourning and grieving.
