We also see the Facebook’s and Alibaba’s of the world that seem to defy the laws of traditional business growth to become the mega-companies that rival 100 year old economic stalwarts like AT&T and GM.

Small Business Development Center at UNR celebrates 30 years as a resource for startups

Small businesses in Nevada were a big deal in 2014. The Nevada Small Business Development Center, a statewide resource for business assistance and headquartered in the University of Nevada, Reno’s College of Business, helped open 136 new small businesses in the state last year.

“It’s easy to forget the impact small businesses can have, especially with the growing focus on many big-named businesses in the state,” Sam Males, director of the Nevada SBDC, said. “These smaller businesses created 470 jobs and $18 million in new financing, clearly making a marked impact.”

Letter: Vote for moving Carson City forward to prosperity

Editor:
This Board of Supervisors’ campaign is one of the nastiest that I can recall in our town history. I cannot speak enough for supporting the existing board and the hope that they bring to our City for growth and inspiration to improve our economy and make Carson City a destination place.

In the 25 years that I have been involved in the downtown dynamics, this is the only Board of Supervisors that is moving forward with a vision to better our City. Twenty-five years folks, it is time for a change!

Letter: Why we must redevelop downtown

My wife and I were on the fence about whether or not to purchase the downtown building at 716 North Carson, previously known as Washington Street Station. After all, the building was more than half empty and had not attracted a new tenant in five years.

A bank had repossessed the building two years previously and had been unable to sell it even as it gradually cut the initial listing price almost in half. And to top things off, the building had extensive water damage throughout caused by a leaky roof, and the few tenants it did have were unhappy with conditions.

There has been a lot of controversy and negative press over the last few years regarding our downtown and the movement of the 20/20 group. Many of you remember Carson City having a downtown. Some of you are new to our area within the last 30 years, and some are of a generation who grew up here and only know what you have been familiar with. Opinion: Spending Other People’s Money

When most of us spend our personal funds for a good or service, we strive for maximum value because our funds are finite.

Public spending, whether at the Federal, state or local level, occurs because of borrowed money, taxes and user fees ultimately paid for by an overlapping pool of individuals and businesses.
