The Carson City Chamber continues to search for new items for their artisan store to launch in time for holiday gift giving. This year, the Chamber partnered with Silver State Industries to introduce the first in several series of collector’s puzzles featuring iconic Carson City scenes.

CARSON CITY — From the historic United States Branch Mint to the V&T Railroad to the fact it remains one of the most sparsely populated state capitals, Carson City has a colorful and unique history.

It's parade day in Carson City, which means a host of Nevada Day activities throughout the state capital all day long.

Of course, the 80th annual Nevada Day Parade is the centerpiece of the Silver State's 154th birthday celebration.

Eight days before the presidential election of 1864, Nevada became the 36th state in the union. Hello Carson City and welcome to Friday, Nevada Day, Oct. 26, 2018. Today is the observed state holiday, where businesses are open but state and local government offices and schools are closed. Meanwhile, the capital city itself is getting warmed up for a three-day weekend and famed parade that celebrates statehood.

Nevada's celebration of statehood provides for a bevy of activities that showcase the Silver State's best. From contests to exhibits, food and beverages of all kinds, Native dancing, hot air balloons, concerts, a carnival celebration at Mills Park and the famed Nevada Day parade, there is something for everyone throughout the long weekend.

The Nevada State Museum and the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City are offering free admission both Friday and Saturday in recognition of Nevada Day.

While many people enjoy three days off through Labor Day this weekend, the locomotives and their volunteer crews at the Nevada State Railroad Museum (NSRM) are going full-steam ahead.

It’s nice that the beginning of the school year is almost immediately rewarded with a three-day weekend. You’ll find annual events like Civil War Days in Virginia City and the Best in the West Rib Cook-off in Sparks, in addition to smaller happenings like the monthly Downtown Carson City Wine Walk and a roller derby double-header. We are running out of summer weekends. I know that’s hard to believe right now, but hoodies and everything pumpkin is just beyond the horizon. Grab summer with both hands and go enjoy this beautiful city. The Brewery Arts Center brings Dennis Johnson and the Mississippi Ramblers to the stage for tonight’s free concert. Check out the Railroad Museum for your fill of music and antique motor cars. Car lovers have two shows to choose from today: spectators will be able to enjoy both, but you’ll have to pick one if you want to enter your ride. Keep reading for more summertime fun.

I’m not even going to speculate on the air quality, but please use your best judgement when choosing your activities and there may be some cancellations that I am not aware of. Downtown has a full day of options, but the back roads may be a little more difficult to navigate due to construction projects. The great music that awaits will be worth the hassle. Next Friday night, August 17, beginning at 6 p.m., the cool Carson City Community Center will be swinging as the hot USAF Band of the Golden West Commanders Jazz Ensemble performs tunes from some of the greatest swing bands of all times.

Due to heavy smoke settling on the area, the RoseBud's Dance Band's performance for Monday, Aug. 6, as part of the Carson City Jazz and Beyond Music and Art Festival has been moved to inside the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall, 511 W. King St. The concert was originally planned for Comma Courtyard, but the performers want to present the event in a comfortable and healthy atmosphere.

The Nevada State Railroad Museum is hosting a Motor Car Weekend, with train rides, classic car displays, and free concerts all weekend long.

Friday opens the 15th annual Jazz and Beyond Music and Art Festival in Carson City that features 17 days of music, art and film at multiple venues in Carson City, August 3-19.

During the 2018 Carson City Fair, Carson Now held a coloring contest which produced 53 excellent entries, voted on by 433 voters. The entries were on display through the weekend in the exhibition hall of Fuji Park.

It’s almost August and that means the sounds of jazz, jazz and more jazz at the various venues around Carson City, thanks to the coordination by the Mile High Jazz Band.

Yeah, it’s hot out there, but it’s the area happenings that are sizzling. The Carson City Fair at Fuji Park offers a plethora of entertainment for all ages including tractor pulls, a carnival, and farm animals. Under the shade of the Mills Park cottonwoods, you’ll have all day to peruse the varied vehicles in the annual Run Whatcha Brung Car Show. The sun will come out tomorrow, but it’s the stars that are coming out tonight for the free Levitt Amp Concert at the Brewery Arts Center.

With the end of the heat wave nowhere in sight, people are beginning to get a little stir crazy stuck inside lying in front of the air-conditioning all day. Luckily, Carson City and the surrounding areas offer many options to keep cool while we wait for high temperatures to come down some.

I have long found it impossible to decide which Carson City event is my favorite: forever waffling between Nevada Day and the Taste of Downtown. Seeing as the annual parade is still months away, I’m going to side with ‘The Taste’ purely for its timeliness. With over forty local eateries participating, multiple raffles at downtown shops, and seven bands rocking every corner of the event, it’s practically impossible to have a bad time. This might be the biggest happening in town, but it’s by no means the only good time: read on for all this weekend’s options.

This week's edition of It's Your City features all things Taste of Downtown, the 25th annual culinary extravaganza happens this Saturday in Carson City.

Summer fun is heating up! Let the kids burn off some energy at the Kids Triathlon at Mills Park. Get your grub on at the annual Nevada Honor Flight Chili Cook-off at Glen Eagles, and make sure to check out the craft vendors. If you’re feeling competitive, head down to the Carson Mall for their watermelon and hot dog eating contests.
