Railroad museum in Carson City accepts full-sized replica of V&T’s first locomotive

CARSON CITY — The old saying that legends never die might also be said about old locomotives. Many of those iron horses, long lost to time or the scrap heap, live on through historic photographs, artwork and the hearts and minds and skillful hands of railroad buffs.

State museums in Nevada offer free admission for active-duty military families

CARSON CITY — Nevada’s state museums are once again taking part in the national Blue Star Museums program, providing free admission to active-duty military personnel and their families.

The National Endowment for the Arts and Blue Star Families program, now in its 10th year, launched the 2019 program on Saturday, May 18 – Armed Forces Day – and it will stay in effect through the Labor Day Weekend.

The Nevada State Railroad Museum, Carson City will reopen Saturday, March 4, with free weekend admission for all.
The museum has been closed since Jan. 8 due to significant damage from floodwaters that inundated the property, damaging the tracks, fire roads and a number of buildings.

National Train Day is celebrated Saturday, May 7, in honor of the driving of the Golden Spike at Promontory, Utah that marked completion of the Transcontinental Railroad in 1869. Operating from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., both days, the McKeen offers passengers an authentic glimpse of its rich and important past.

The four children of Jack and Margie Gibson have honored their parents’ decades-long service to the Nevada State Railroad Museum, Carson City, with a $40,000 donation that enabled the museum’s latest exhibition.

All Aboard: McKeen Car featured at Nevada Railroad Museum Friday and Saturday

All Aboard for a Nevada Day treat at the Nevada Railroad Museum in Carson City. The historic McKeen motor car will operate both Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. While the Nevada Day parade ends at the museum’s doorstep at the corner of Fairview Drive and U.S. 395, access to the museum will be open all day. Rides are $8 for adults, and $4 for ages 4-11 and museum members, free for those age 3 and younger.

Glenbrook restoration wins international award

Restoration of the historic 1875 steam locomotive “The Glenbrook” has been recognized with an international award from the Association of Tourist Railroads and Railway Museums.
The narrow gauge engine at the Nevada State Museum, Carson City debuted in May following 30 years of painstaking care to bring it back to authentic and historic condition, thanks to a generous grant from the E.L. Wiegand Foundation.

Restored to its breathtaking beauty, steam locomotive Glenbrook is unveiled

Train buffs and dignitaries gathered at the Nevada Rail Road Museum under rainy skies, Saturday for the unveiling of the Glenbrook, a historic locomotive that once hauled lumber from Lake Tahoe sawmills to Spooner Summit.

“Nowhere else can you see an event like this,” said Peter Barton, Administrator of the Division of Museums and History. “We’ve done research before we started restoring, we spent months with historians and researchers. The locomotive has been painstakingly restored, no where else can you find a locomotive that has had so much time spent working on it.”

By 1943, it was saved from scrap and donated by the Bliss Family to the Nevada State Museum, where it pleased countless youngsters who crawled all over it outside the museum’s doors on Carson Street for four decades. Restored by the Nevada State Railroad Museum, it is under steam again.

A railroad mystery, Nevada history, a dog and a ghost are the central figures in a new book by author Jan Pierson, set to visit the Nevada State Railroad Museum, Carson City, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 9 and 10. The author will sign copies of her book “Ghost Girl in Car No. 9,” the fifth in her series “The Ghostowners,” in the museum store.

National Train Day at the Nevada Railroad Museum set for May 10

To commemorate National Train Day the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City will operate and offer rides on May 10 aboard Virginia & Truckee Railway's McKeen motor car No. 22.

The car entered service for the V&T on May 9, 1910, and was retired in 1945. No. 22 is the only restored and operable McKeen motor car in the world. In 2012, the Secretary of the Interior granted the No. 22 National Historic Landmark status, which recognizes the McKeen motor car's significance to United States history.
