Get a jump on spring cleaning and lend a hand to the Big Brothers, Big Sisters program. You’ll find their clothing drive at Red’s Old 395 from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. Show off your skills at Retro Replay if you fancy yourself a Smash Bros.

And here comes more rain. Take a stand against the wet weather and go enjoy Carson City. Karaoke can be found at SlotWorld Casino on Highway 50 East. Live music is always on the menu at Living the Good Life. Kick up your heels and learn some new moves at Carson Lanes – Country Dance lessons are every Tuesday and Wednesday. Another day off for the schoolkids and state workers and, you guessed it, it’s going to be rainy. If you need to get out for a little fun tonight, head to the Carson Cigar Company for their weekly Game Night. Dancing the night away with the High Sierra Swing Dance Club is always a good Monday option.

As the three-day Presidents' Day weekend begins, Carson City has much to offer. Carson Comedy does a double-dose tonight with Rick D’Elia at the Carson Nugget and Craig ‘The Lovemaster’ Shoemaker at the Brewery Arts Center. World Dance Open Floor at Comma Coffee is like an open mic for dancers. Travel the world with the annual International Film Weekend at the Community Center; it's free and also features local Independent films. Karaoke, live music, dancing and more round out tonight's options.

FRIDAY:

Windy, rainy days are excellent for watching movies. Luckily, the International Film Weekend kicks off today with Chinese film, ‘Wolf Totem,’ in the Community Center Theater. Show up at 3 p.m. if you want to be wowed by some independent films from students at the UNR Reynolds School of Journalism.

Holy moly, water everywhere. It’s not a bad idea to stay close to Carson City tonight. There's live music with Brother Dan at Living the Good Life, comedienne Kat Simmons at the Carson Nugget, or the documentary on Bill Cunningham at the Nevada State Museum that may be enough to tempt you out. Please be careful, drive safely, and keep an umbrella handy. Keep your fingers crossed this storm passes quickly – a full moon and lunar eclipse at sunset are visible to those without cloudy skies.

I just keep telling myself that the spring flowers will be amazing this year, but honestly, I’m growing weary of all this rain. Several of our hiking and bike trails have been affected, the sports fields are a muddy mess, and we are still in danger of more flooding.

The week is moving along and we are getting closer to Valentine’s Day. Don’t forget to make reservations for dinner with your sweetheart. If your loved one is an art lover, take a look inside the new Wild Horse Gallery at the Carson Mall: their grand opening is this evening. It’s going to be a great Tuesday, Carson City. Parks and Recreation sponsors their weekly ‘Easy Walk’ along Kings Canyon Trail. Although, if the rain continues to fall, the walk will take place at our new Multi-Purpose Athletic Center. Capital City Art Initiative celebrates the artists of Western Nevada College this evening, and then welcomes Phyllis Shafer for an illustrated discussion of her work. The Carson City Classic Cinema Club shows off a young Elizabeth Taylor tonight in the 1954 romantic drama ‘The Last Time I Saw Paris.’

Trick-or-treating in the Nevada state capital will occur on Halloween night — Monday, October 31 — this year, according to the Carson City Manager’s Office.

Three years of change and rebranding efforts by the Carson City Visitors Bureau (CCVB) are turning the Nevada state capital into a tourist destination, said CCVB Executive Director Joel Dunn, and no longer a point on the road map to pass through.

Three days of thrill-seeking, mountain biking adventure and plenty of capital city hospitality and entertainment will kick off the inaugural Carson City Off-Road Epic Ride series beginning Friday and lasting through the weekend.

Sophie Sheppard, artist and daughter of the noted Nevada artist and educator Craig Sheppard will join exhibit curator Jim McCormick to discuss the elder Sheppard's impact on the arts in Nevada at a free public reception and discussion from 5 to 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 3 in Carson City. The discussion of “A Brushwork Roundup: Western Paintings and Drawings by Craig Sheppard” begins at 6 p.m.

CARSON CITY, Nev. – The United Veterans Legislative Council presented Assemblyman PK O’Neill with a certificate of appreciation in recognition of O’Neill’s service to Nevada veterans in the 78th legislative session.

A portion of the extraordinary art collection of Wally Cuchine, former director of the Eureka Opera House, is featured in "Wally's World" at the Nevada Arts Council’s OXS Gallery through Sept. 18. The public is invited to join the council from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14 for an exhibit reception and collector's talk. Cuchine's discussion of his art collection begins at 6:15 p.m. The exhibit and reception are free.

The capital city community has extended an outpouring of support for a Carson City Sheriff's Office deputy who was shot and killed early Saturday morning responding to a domestic violence call at an east Carson City home.

With officers, administrators and volunteer in police service personnel streaming out of the sheriff's administrative office during a series of briefings Saturday morning and afternoon, they've been met randomly by Carson City and surrounding area community members, bringing flowers, cards, bracelets, statuettes, along with words of respect, sorrow and to offer condolences.

UPDATE: Tonight at 8 p.m. there will be a candle light vigil at the Peace Officer Memorial site in Carson City at Nevada State Legislature. Please come out and show your support for the Carson City Sheriff's Office Deputy who gave his life, for his family....both blood and in blue, and the entire community of Carson City as we all mourn the loss of a true hero.

A Carson City Sheriff's deputy was killed in a shooting early Saturday morning during an exchange of gunfire on Montez Drive on the northeast side of Carson City. The suspect also died, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong.

The following is a statement by Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong:
At 2:18 a.m., Carson City Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the report of a domestic battery involving physical injury at the 4100 block of Montez Drive in East Carson City. As officers arrived at the scene, they reported physical injury to the female. Within minutes, the male suspect came out of the house and opened fire on the officers, killing one. Additional units arrived in the area and secured the residence, evacuating three children (ages 8-13) and one adult. The suspect was located dead at the scene.

The Carson City Sheriff’s has relinquished the investigation of this incident to the Reno Police Department.

Officer and family information is not being released at this time.

A Carson City Sheriff's deputy was critically injured during an exchange of gunfire on Mondtez Drive on the northeast side of Carson City Saturday morning at around 3 a.m.

The area has been cordoned off and the Carson City Sheriff crime lab unit, Nevada Highway Patrol and Douglas County Sheriff deputies are on the scene. More details to follow.

"I live in east Carson and was up at about 2:30AM this AM (Sat 8-15-15) and heard 10-15 shoots fired followed by multiple sirens over the next 45 minutes and also a helicopter flying north along what looked like the freeway & east on hwy 50."

The Comstock History Center Museum in Virginia City will feature a new exhibit beginning Thursday, A Brushwork Roundup: Western Paintings and Drawings by Craig Sheppard. A native of southwestern Oklahoma and former bronco rider in Madison Square Garden, Sheppard was a prime mover in northern Nevada’s cultural community in the years following World War II.

A bright spot on the second floor brings life and color to the Nevada Legislative Building in celebration of Youth Art Month. Created by children of all ages during the Arts for All Nevada workshops earlier this year, the works show how, students, some with special needs, express creativity and talents with multi-media on paper.
