RENO – Two Nevada State Bank branches will host food drives to benefit the Food Bank of Northern Nevada’s “Feed NV and the Sierra” campaign, kicking off and supporting Hunger Action Month.

RENO - Based on processed applications as of May 13, 2020, Nevada State Bank has announced approval for 4,255 U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans totaling $592,005,500.

More than 68% of the loans were made to businesses with fewer than 10 employees and approximately 82% of the loans approved were for amounts less than $150,000 (57% for amounts less than $50,000). The funding will help preserve payrolls for 65,607 Nevada jobs, based on applicant data.

CARSON CITY — The fundraising arm of Western Nevada College — WNC Foundation — held its fourth annual Reach for the Stars Gala on Aug. 10, raising more than $75,000 to benefit students seeking higher education.

With some help from the Ghost of Mark Twain, Carson City Chamber of Commerce celebrated its accomplishments for the year at their annual meeting Thursday evening at The Martin Hotel Restaurant.

New leaders from all walks of life will be honored for the time they spent over the past 9 months learning about Carson City during the 2019 Leadership Institute Class Graduation, the 30th graduation to date.

Seventeen current and future leaders assembled at the Chamber on Thursday to begin their leadership journey.

Over the next 8 months, the class will be hosted by the Sheriff, Parks & Recreation, Public Works, Carson High School, Western Nevada College and more as they take the behind the scenes tours of Carson City.

Reach for the Stars Gala attendees enjoyed an unforgettable Saturday night under the stars at Jack C. Davis Observatory at Western Nevada College in Carson City. The third annual gala raised money for student scholarships, academic programs and the observatory.

On June 21, the Carson City Leadership Institute Class of 2018 graduated at the Chamber’s Annual Meeting.

The Private Bank by Nevada State Bank released the fifth of its High Net Worth briefings today. The research prepared by local market research firm Applied Analysis estimated that recent changes in federal tax policy could cost Nevada’s high net-worth households as much as $1.8 billion annually. Changes analyzed included those sourced to higher marginal and capital gains tax rates, modifications to the alternative minimum tax, the reintroduction of deduction limitations for wealthy families (Pease limitation), new Medicare taxes and a permanent modification to the estate and gift tax.

The report suggests that Nevada’s higher income households were overly exposed to real estate investment risk prior to the recession and have rapidly shifted assets into low-yield bonds, transaction accounts and certificates of deposit.

LAS VEGAS – Nevadans with a net worth of more than $1 million make up only 0.2 percent of the state’s population but account for more than 27 percent of its reported charitable contributions, according to a report from The Private Bank by Nevada State Bank.

The third in the bank’s series of monthly reports prepared in conjunction with local market research firm Applied Analysis focused on charitable giving by Nevadans with a household net worth of at least $1 million.

UPDATE 7:17PM: Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong said the two suspects captured after this morning's Wells Fargo bank robbery may be tied to a Nevada State Bank robbery in Reno. The two men, Kenneth Wayne Young, 44, and Michael Lee Smith, 36, are leaving Carson City Jail and will be booked and arraigned in federal court.
The following is a statement from the Carson City Sheriff's Office regarding the robberies:

Rachel Barrett, 30, was sentenced up to 15 years in prison for her attempt to rob the Nevada State Bank on South Carson Street in October. Armed with a BB pistol, she handed the teller a note and made off with $643 in cash. She was found a short time later at her apartment a few blocks away. District Judge Todd Russell sentenced her to 26-120 months for the robbery, plus a consecutive 24-60 months for a crime against a senior citizen, since the teller was 72 years old. She also received a concurrent 16-72 months sentence for burglary.

Jorge Dominguez-Gomez was sentenced to two consecutive life terms in prison for molesting two 11-year-old girls. Dominguez-Gomez, 37, confessed to the crimes, and will not be eligible for parole for at least 20 years.

According to Carson City Fire Chief Stacey Giomi, the cause of last Friday's Larel Fire will go down as undetermined. Giomi said their investigation didn't turn up evidence off what started the 318 acre fire east of Deer Run Road. The blaze initially threatened about 20 homes before wind gusts up to 60 mph pushed the flame away, into the dry brush in Brunswick Canyon.
