Topaz Lake to open to fishing on New Years Day

Topaz Lake, which is located along U.S. 395 at the Nevada-California state line, will open its 2015 fishing season, one half hour before sunrise, on Thursday, Jan. 1.

If the weather is decent, if you don't have a massive hangover, if you like to fish and if you don't have anything else planned, this could be a fun way to start the New Year. Bundle up though because daytime temperatures in the area are not expected break 30 degrees.

Drought to blame for dead fish at Washoe Lake

On the receding shoreline of Washoe Lake, Alexandra Voss snapped photos of dead fish and sent it to News 4. She says there are hundreds of eyeless fish, and notes that there is no real odor, no flies, birds, or any other predator anywhere in sight.
As mysterious as the Carp look, Chris Healy, spokesman for The Nevada Department of Wildlife, says he isn't surprised.

Local coyote hunt draws some controversy

Local hunters have organized a coyote hunt, which has raised hackles of animal protection groups. The Saturday event, called a coyote calling contest, is similar to hunts in other parts of Nevada and Western states.
Coyotes are an unprotected species in Nevada; a license or permit is not required to hunt them, according to the Nevada Department of Wildlife.

Spring Creek seeding project aims to jumpstart crucial habitat

On a cold and windy morning in November, 45 men and women took to the hills in the Bodie Hills to plant as many sagebrush seedlings as they could in a two-day span. Besides the cold, the work itself was physically demanding as each seedling had to be planted by hand. What makes this story even more interesting is the fact that many of the people on those hills volunteered to be there.

Indiana artist claims fifth victory in Nevada Duck Stamp Contest

After winning more than 60 wildlife stamp art contests, including this year’s Nevada Duck Stamp Art Contest, most people would probably start getting a little cocky. But artist Jeffrey Klinefelter isn’t like most people. No matter how many wins Klinefelter gets, he never takes anything for granted.

“I’m very surprised,” he said. “There are a lot of talented artists out there and winning one of these contests is really hard to do.”

Event Date:
November 22, 2014 - 9:00am

The Nevada Department of Wildlife will hold its annual volunteer sagebrush seed collection on Saturday, Nov. 22 starting at 9 a.m. Even though 2014 was not a big fire year, Northern Nevada has lost millions of acres of wildlife habitat to wildfires in the last few years and seed is still needed for ongoing range rehabilitation efforts.

“When demand is high for seed, the price for a pound of pure live sagebrush seed can be over $50,” said Steve Foree, NDOW habitat biologist. According to Foree, NDOW either has to buy seed or pick it themselves.

Outdoors with Don Q: Scouting for buck mule deer in the mountains

Last week, Rob Buonamici of Carson City and I spent a fun-filled day, "supposedly" scouting for buck mule deer.

That Management Area is bounded by U.S. 50 on the north side, the California state line on the south side, U.S. 395 on the east side and Lake Tahoe on the west side.
