Celebrate Veterans with the Carson City Council, US Navy League

The Carson City Council of the Navy League of the United States will honor Veterans, past and present, at our November Meeting. We will also pay tribute to our MIA’s and POW’s and celebrate both the Navy and Marine Corps birthdays.

The Speaker is a secret, but will explain the Navy and /or Marine Corps from a current enlisted perspective. What many of older Veteran’s knew as High Tech is antiquated in today’s military. Come and hear what has happened and to celebrate Veterans past and present!

On this day, November 11, 2015, we pay tribute to all those who wear and have worn the uniform in the service of their country. On this day we also pay tribute to the families and friends of our veterans who provide both needed and grateful support to our service members.

A Memorial Day Message from Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell

We often think of Memorial Day as a holiday that generally marks the beginning of summer and the wonderful activities that come with this season. It is a time when we join together for the family barbecue or simply enjoying the day - the peaceful and crisp mornings, the clear skies, the view of our mountains and the still snow covered peaks to our south, or indeed the smell of sagebrush and pine after a gentle rain.

The Social hour begins at 5:30 p.m. and dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m. Our speaker will be Commander Eugene Woodruff, Executive Officer of NAS Fallon. Commander Woodruff will be speaking about new developments in the Chinese Navy and Territorial actions taken by the Chinese in the past year.

This is a change of venue and day of the week. The social hour is at 5:30 PM followed by a buffet dinner at 6:30 PM. We will also be celebrating the Marine Corp’s 239th Birthday. Our speaker will be Colonel Scott D. Leonard, USMC, Commanding Officer, Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center.

Ceremony at capitol Friday to honor 100th anniversary of USS Nevada launch

On Friday, July 11, the Nevada State Museum, the Reno Navy League and the Nevada Sesquicentennial Commission will re-dedicate a plaque at the USS Nevada Memorial on the Capitol Grounds in Carson City. A reception honoring the battleship USS Nevada and her fallen crew will follow in Old Assembly Chambers.

Carson High student honored with rare Naval Junior Reserve Officers merit award

A Carson High School senior and cadet with the Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Crops received a rare merit award Wednesday in Carson City after he applied a life saving technique he learned as a cadet three years ago.

Halsey Saddle Returns to Nevada

A Western saddle handcrafted by Reno residents in 1945 was sent as a special gift to Admiral William Halsey to mark the surrender of Japanese forces in World War II. The Halsey Saddle arrives Thursday from the U.S. Naval Academy Museum in Annapolis, MD, on a three-year loan. Gov. Brian Sandoval is scheduled to take delivery. The saddle that gained international attention during the war will be housed at the Nevada State Museum in Carson City in honor of the state’s 150th birthday coming up in 2014 and will tour the state.

Veterans Donate to Carson City Library

Representatives from the Vietnam Veterans of America, Carson City Sea Cadets and U.S. Navy League gathered at the Carson City Library Friday to donate a Bluejackets Manual and a 1942-1943 USS Nevada Cruise Book. Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell and Library Director Sara Jones were on hand for the event.
