Native American art

November is National Native American Heritage Month. In recognition of that, the Foundation for Carson City Parks & Recreation is hosting an open house and exhibit of selected examples of two- and three-dimensional Native American art at the historic Wungnema House in Mills Park, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, November 17, 2017.

Artists from the second installment of the Great Basin Native Artists show will hold a reception 5-7 p.m. Friday at the Stewart Indian School, and their work will remain on display throughout the weekend during the annual Father’s Day Powwow.

The Foundation for Carson City Parks and Recreation will host an open house and exhibit of selected works of Native American art at the historic Wungnema House located in Mills Park, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, May 28.

May is a month to celebrate historic preservation and archaeology in Nevada.

Nevada agencies and organizations have worked to spread awareness of archaeological and historic preservation efforts throughout the state, encouraging both residents and visitors to explore and learn about Nevada’s significant archaeological and historical treasures.

Although inspired by his Paiute and Arapaho heritage, Topah Spoonhunter’s artwork is intended for a broader audience.

“The ideas passed down through tribal culture, I think a lot of people might dismiss as primitive,” he said. “But in my experience there’s a lot of knowledge that’s useful today. The spirit of my work can apply to anybody.”

The Foundation for Carson City Parks & Recreation is holding an Open House at the Wungnema House in Mills Park on Sunday, Feb. 19, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. honoring Native American heritage.

Art lovers will have two receptions to attend in Carson City on Friday evening. Gil Martin, who makes his own paint from natural earth pigments that he digs up from various sources in the western United States, will feature his work in the “From the Ground Up” exhibit presented by the Capital City Arts Initiative Friday through May 24 at the Courthouse Gallery.

Melissa Melero-Moose draws on her roots growing up as a Paiute on the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony for her work as a mixed-medium painter. But her work is not a relic of days past.

Red Thunder has gained the reputation of being one of North America's finest First Nation's Dance Companies. Red Thunder will perform in Carson City at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall on Saturday, March 2 at 2pm.

Lillian Pitt is a talented Native American artist featured in the south museum changing gallery show Rock Art Perspectives provided by a grant from the Bureau of Land Management.
