Science has always been a passion of mine, partly because I flunked science in high school and have never understood why. But I stumbled upon a gemstone of science the other day that would make the most lettered academic in the world smile.

Last Saturday I was part of the Rotary Club's Shopping Spree. This annual event pairs a Rotarian with a needy child in hopes of purchasing gifts for the child and members of his/her family.

The young man that I accompanied was a rather precocious and talkative eight-year old who was a bit jaded when it came to acknowledging the magic of Christmas. However, during the shopping part of the activity, my new young friend became very animated and hopeful as he talked about selecting gifts for his family and for himself.

CARSON CITY — With fall in the air and winter nipping at her heels, curling up with a good book is a great way to spend a few hours – or days – and learn about Nevada in the process.

“The Maltese Falcon” and “The Big Sleep” are two of the many noir novels and films explored in The Golden Age of Mysteries, a one-evening community education class at Truckee Meadows Community College on Jan. 29.

The class will examine works by crime and suspense novelists of the 1930s and 1940s and the films that were adapted from their books. Clips from some of the movies of the period will be shown.

On August 27, 1968, Richard Chartrand was going about his morning as usual in his Skyland Drive home in South Lake Tahoe, just north of Zephyr Cove, when things went horribly wrong, and a mystery began that is still unsolved today.

Hello Carson City, today is Monday, Oct. 22, 2018. As another weekend ends, a short work week begins with Friday officially Nevada Day, a state holiday and a weekend of festivities ahead including Saturday's famed Nevada Day parade.

Tahoe author Todd Borg will be the featured guest Wednesday in Carson City at the Nevada State Library’s Brown Bag Book series. Borg is the author of 16 books in the Tahoe Mystery series, featuring Owen McKenna, a former homicide inspector from the San Francisco Police Department.

Jennifer Quashnick, author of the Mountaingirl Mysteries series, speaks at the Browsers Corner Book Store in Carson City on Wednesday evening. Quashnick, the author of three novels set in the Lake Tahoe Basin, is one of the featured authors in the Friends of the Carson City Library’s ongoing author series.

Jennifer Quashnick is the local Tahoe author of the Mountaingirl Mysteries series, in which Rachel Winters, a Lake Tahoe resident frequently accompanied by her dog Bella, finds herself embroiled in murder, mystery, and romance in the Tahoe Basin and beyond. The series begins with the Sierra Nevada Trail of Murder, where Rachel and Bella discover a murder victim along a local hiking trail. The series continues with Sierra Nevada River of Lies and Sierra Nevada Dangerous Developments.

I hate to be a tease, but I just have to say something about this upcoming weekend. Friday night brings us the Fox Brewpub's first summer concert featuring Shane Dwight in McFadden Plaza, the Broncs and Bulls Smackdown at Fuji Park, or the kick off to Street Vibrations Spring Rally at Battle Born Harley. Saturday welcomes the first Third and Curry Farmers Market of the year, the monthly Wine Walk, and Dayton’s annual Oodles of Noodles Festival and Pasta Cook-off.

RENO — In addition to navigating pristine wild rivers and dirt roads, big-fish wrangler Zeb Hogan of Nat Geo WILD’s “Monster Fish” show also had to navigate a maze of dangerous military zones in order to tell the story of his travel and research in the remote and wild Salween River that runs through China, Thailand and Myanmar.

We have arrived at my favorite week of the year. I am a great lover of all things Nevada Day, and it’s practically moments away. Luckily, we have plenty to keep us busy until Saturday. Two new art exhibits have appeared over the weekend: the annual Nevada Day Show at the Nevada Artists Association gallery, and ‘Inspirations’ at the Community Development Building, across from City Hall on Proctor.

Todd Borg will share with his audience his journey to becoming one of the most acclaimed mystery writers of our time. Borg now has fourteen Tahoe mysteries featuring ex-San Francisco homicide inspector Owen McKenna.

The sixth annual Lake Tahoe Home and Garden Show will be held April 28-29, 2017 in the South Tahoe Middle School multipurpose room.

Space is being increased to allow more vendors from the region to participate in the only event of its type on the South Shore. A free children's planting area is also being added to the two day show that runs from 4:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m on Friday, and 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m on Saturday.

Ellie Gibson, 90, recently read “Firefly Lane,” by Kristin Hannah. “I did three days straight, both day and night,” she said. “I didn’t make the bed, I didn’t do anything. I just read that book. It was so good, I cried halfway through it.”

Hold onto your broomstick, this weekend is bound to sweep you up in Halloween fun. First you’ll need a pumpkin. The Harvest Train Festival and Pumpkin Patch at the Nevada State Railroad Museum is a good place to start. Take the costumed kids to a Trunk or Treat at Advantage Auto Works off Old Hot Springs Road courtesy of the members of Carson Cruise Meet and Greet. Team up with Mark Twain for a ghostly tour of our haunted downtown or you can choose a shorter tour that’s perfect for families. Keep reading, this is just the tip of the candy corn.

Get those costumes ready, the Halloween parties start tonight. Ed’s Doghouse’s party kicks off at 6 p.m. and is celebrating proprietor and namesake’s birthday as well. Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar has DJ Mobeatz and DJ Cillo keeping you on the dance floor. Scaryoke at Whiskey Tavern combines karaoke, beer pong, and drink specials for a super crazy fun time. Author of children’s adventure books, Mary Randall will speak on her book “A Walk Through the Woods” in a free presentation at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday, August 8, at 10:00 am.

In her book Mary Randall asks the reader to believe in magic and have a zest for adventure as they trek along with Bobby and his pals through the Magic Kingdom of the woods. The reader will encounter talking animals, twists, turns, and secrets along with Indian spirits and ghosts of the Civil War. Randall hopes that readers will enjoy this amazing journey of surprises, mysteries and fun.

Fleischmann Planetarium at the University of Nevada, Reno hosts several breathtaking immersive theater experiences this sping, playing March 30-June 14, 2015. One of the great mysteries of sports is the amateur baseball draft. With the largest pool of players under consideration for draft selection than any other major sport and ball players being scouted from a variety different levels, there is plenty of uncertainty to go around.

Even with a 40-round format, many outstanding players go unselected by a Major League Baseball team. However, a draft hasn’t gone by without at least one Western Nevada College player being selected since the Carson City baseball program formed in 2006.

The Department of Anthropology announces the publication of a new book, “An Archaeology of Desperation: Exploring the Donner Party’s Alder Creek Camp.” The book is a collaboration between anthropology scholars from the University of Nevada, Reno and other academics.

The Star Party at the Jack C. Davis Observatory at Western Nevada College in Carson City will be held on Saturday and will feature a lecture entitled "Infinity and Beyond" by Mike Thomas. Doors open at 6 p.m., with the lecture to begin at 7:30 p.m.
