The high school track season may have ended early this year, but that won’t stop Carson High School’s top senior long distance runner from continuing his running career. On Monday, Zach Sever signed a letter of intent to run cross country and track for Bryan College in Dayton, Tenn.


How many students ever apply to participate in a contest, let alone actually do it and win 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or even 5th place? For that matter, how many adults say they are going to write a book one day, paint like Michelangelo, or seek discomfort, my own personal new year’s resolution, by learning something new, performing selfless endeavors, or fulfilling an item on their bucket list?

Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada is pleased to announce this year’s Triumphant: Celebrating Women in Leadership Dinner honorees. Six women, each representing one of the six Girl Scout focus areas, will be recognized at the 17th annual awards dinner on Thursday, Nov. 21, 2019, at the Atlantis Casino Resort Spa in Reno.

The Carson City School District is pleased to announce, of any high school, Carson High School retains the most National Merit and Presidential Scholars committing to the University of Nevada, Reno. Fourteen CHS seniors pledged to continue their education with the university during the Nevada Scholars Signing Day, held in the CHS library Wednesday, May 22.

Ahead of next week’s Miss USA Competition, happening on Thursday in Reno, each competing representative from across the country gathered in Carson City on Thursday at the Nevada State Legislature and Nevada State Capitol building to meet with representatives of the Nevada government.

According to Ivet Contreras of IC Media Strategy, the fact that Nevada’s State Senate has a female-led majority, the first in the U.S., was a part of the decision to tour the government grounds today.

I am a mother of five who immigrated to this country 33 years ago because of the opportunity of a better life. The American Dream. My life here with my family has been a dream, and I want my kids to know all the opportunities America offers. CARSON CITY — Dual degrees in mechanical engineering and journalism weren’t enough to satisfy Jill Maragos’ need to stand out, so she chooses to stand up. A female comedian in a largely male-dominated field, Maragos serves up her unique “outrage over minutia” style in a special “Ladies Night of Comedy – Where Women Get the Last Laugh” event at the Carson Comedy Club, located inside the Carson Nugget Casino Hotel, 507 N. Carson High School senior Cesia Enriquez is working to complete her Senior Project graduation requirement with the Carson City Sheriff’s Office 2018 CHS Seniors Academy, specifically designed for those seniors interested in making law enforcement their future career.

A momentous congratulations goes out to the students who voluntarily and competitively placed in the 2017 Carson City School Board Sponsored American Citizen Essay Contest with first place at the high school level going to CHS 9th grade Honors English student Marissa Messmann, second place to CHS 12th grade College Readiness Senior English student Jessica Preston, and third place going to 9th grade Honors English student Matteas Klatt.

The Carson City Sunset Rotary Club was proud to present the first half of a $3,500 scholarship to Maddi Saarem, a Mechanical Engineering student at UNR.

Want to be a lawyer for a day? At CHS, with Mock Trial, it is possible. Mock Trial is Law and Order set in a simulated trial environment in a real courthouse with a real judge. The Carson High School Mock Trial team will meet professional attorneys and students around the state to compete Feb. 17 in Reno.

It is time for a great workout at Carson High School to both support its students and potentially win a race, not to mention avoid a heart attack.

The seventh annual Safe and Sober 2017 5K Run/Walk at the CHS track facility, presented by Carson High Safe Grad Booster, is set for Feb. 11.

The formation of a simple coffee stain has been the subject of complex study for decades, though it turns out that there remain some stones still to be turned. Researchers at the University of Nevada, Reno have modeled how a colloidal droplet evaporates and found a previously overlooked mechanism that more accurately determines the dynamics of particle deposition in evaporating sessile droplets, which has ramifications in many fields of today’s technological world.

When Charles Blim considers new artists to exhibit in his gallery at 114 W. Telegraph Street in downtown Carson City, he looks at more than just their artwork.

The seniors of Carson High School will deliver their Senior Project speeches on April 18. Each student must deliver an 8-12 minute speech in front of 4-5 Carson City Community members, and this is no easy task as, statistically, many fear public speaking more than death.

Miles Construction has hired mechanical engineer Jeff Rowan to add to their team of project managers. With more than 28 years of experience in the processing and construction industries, Rowan will be leading Miles’ more complex industrial projects.

Rowan holds a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa. He holds an ISO 9000 certification, considered the highest standard for quality management in the industry.

Just a reminder that proficiency testing is this week at CHS. Students taking the proficiency tests will begin their school day at the regular time of 7:45 a.m., while those not taking the proficiencies will start their school day at 10:30 a.m. The following tests will be given on the assigned days — March 2: Math; March 3: Reading; March 4: Writing; and March 5: Science. Getting to the finals of the Walt Disney Imaginations Design Competition was a pinnacle for three University of Nevada, Reno engineering students, who spent a week in a fun and intensive competition with five other finalist universities.

A student team from the University of Nevada, Reno has been selected as one of the top six finalists by Walt Disney Imagineering, the design and development arm of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, in its 24th Imaginations competition. Imaginations is a design competition created and sponsored by Walt Disney Imagineering with the purpose of seeking out and nurturing the next generation of diverse Imagineers.

Chanwoo Park, assistant professor of mechanical engineering, joins a growing group of researchers at the University of Nevada, Reno who have received prestigious and highly competitive National Science Foundation CAREER awards.

The Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Program award is given to junior faculty at the beginning of their academic careers who exemplify the role of teacher-scholars, placing focus on high-quality research and education activities.
