May day has come and gone, but just barely. This is my favorite time of year in Carson City: blooming flowers, warmer days, and the return of summertime activities. The Historic Carson Scavenger Hunt begins today, so head downtown and look for the unique features that make the buildings one of a kind. Mondays are perfect for getting out and starting the week off with some swing dancing with our local club, the High Sierra Swing Dancers. Firkin and Fox is a great place for food and drink, but tonight you can go and sing some songs with karaoke leaders J and M Productions.

Prescribed fire operations continue on Lake Tahoe’s East, South shores

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Weather permitting, the U.S. Forest Service, the Nevada Division of State Lands and the Nevada Division of Forestry may conduct prescribed fire operations next week beginning Monday, May 2, 2016. 

On the East Shore, operations may take place in the Rocky Point area near Tunnel Creek Road, Montreal Canyon near Spooner Summit and south of Glenbrook near Camp Galilee.

In celebration of Historic Preservation Month, the Carson City Historic Resources Commission will hold its 7th annual Historic Preservation Scavenger Hunt beginning Monday and running through May 31.

Since the early 1980s, May has been a month for celebrating historic preservation and archaeology in Nevada. This year, the theme acknowledges the 50th anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act, which helps to stabilize neighborhoods and downtowns, contributes to public education, attracts investment, creates jobs, generates tax revenues, supports small business and affordable housing, and powers Nevada’s heritage tourism industry.

Carson City coed league softball fires up Friday night with 32 teams for the spring season

The season’s first adult coed softball league play launched Friday night at Centennial Park in Carson City, with signups up considerably over the past couple of years.

According to Carson City Parks and Recreation Recreation Sports Program Supervisor Scott Chapman, 32 coed teams are on tap to play this year, up from 30 last year and 28 the previous year.

Applications being accepted for Carson City redevelopment facade improvement grants

The Carson City Redevelopment Authority is offering grants of up to $25,000 to improve the exterior façades of commercial buildings within the Redevelopment District. The grant can be used to make improvements to the exterior of existing commercial buildings, including signs. The grant requires the property owner to pay at least half the cost of the improvements. A total of $200,000 has been allocated to the program.
