And that they did.  The meeting began at 6:30 PM with an overview of the project from Public Works, followed by public commentary, and didn’t wrap up with the final vote until 10:30 PM.

Carson City School District Implementing Empower Plan

A parent walks alongside her child. She grips his hand tightly. She is excited, to be sure, but she will shed some tears today as she leaves her child for his first day of kindergarten. Thirteen years later, she will watch that same child walk across a stage, accept a diploma and end his journey through the K-12 educational system. For many Americans, these two engrained images serve as the cultural bookends of our educational continuum. The emotions parents often feel; excitement and fear, hope and anxiety, are similar in both experiences.

Movie Review: 'Hunger Games' lives up to hype

The blockbuster film "The Hunger Games," now at the Fandango Galaxy cineplex in Carson City, is an entertaining sci-fi film that has broken box-office records nationwide.

Carson City's Planned Parenthood serves the community, helps the impoverished

Planned Parenthood evokes strong reactions in most people. The name has been in the media a lot lately; from the many attempts to rescind their funding at a federal level to the recent fiasco with the Susan G. Komen Foundation, nearly everyone has the name at the tip of their tongue these days. With that in mind, it's not too surprising that 100 to 150 people crowded into the new Carson City Planned Parenthood clinic to check out the new digs at their open house Monday night.

Movie Review: 'Haywire' features Reno kickboxer Gina Carano

The movie "Haywire,"currently screening at the Fandango Galaxy cineplex in Carson City, is a spy thriller with a twist. The top spy is a woman, Mallory Kane, played by Gina Carano, in her first major starring role.

Those who know the Northern Nevada area might recognize the name Carano from the casinos the family owns and operates. Gina's father Glenn Carano was a backup quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys, and no doubt passed on some toughness to his daughter.

Mallory opens the movie with a expletive that is repeated at the close. Can't say director Steven Soderbergh isn't neat.

Movie Review: 'Twilight Saga, Breaking Dawn Part 1' slow but exactly what the fans want

The latest take on the popular teen-aimed "Twilight" sci-fi-fantasy-horror film series is in town and it's playing at the Fandango Galaxy cineplex.

It's called 'Twilight Saga, Breaking Dawn Part 1," and it brings back most of the cast of the earlier movies, although this is P-13 stuff with a lot of eroticism as well as all those fanged wolves. A teen film it is not, but you can bet a lot of teens are going to see it.

Foreclosure crisis hurts us all

I have a friend here in Carson City who will soon be losing her home. She's not the first, and probably not the last.

She bought her house back near the height of the boom. It's a fairly small, modest home, but fits her needs almost perfectly. At the time, her income from her sales job easily covered her mortgage and expenses. Times were good.

Movie Review: 'In Time' a sci-fi Occupy Wall Street tale with Justin Timberlake chief demonstrater

Strange how fiction (or movies) sometime match up accidentally with the real world. An example of this is "In Time," a film currently playing at the Fandango Galaxy multiplex in Carson City.
