CARSON CITY AND DOUGLAS COUNTIES- The Salvation Army is collecting Christmas Toys for disadvantaged children. As this year’s campaign finishes up the Army is running short on gifts for middle school and high school boys and girls.

All week long, the United States Navy Blue Angels flight team has been in the Carson Valley practicing and preparing for this weekend's Aviation Roundup at the Minden-Tahoe Airport, where they were the headlining act.

UPDATE: If you watched the skies over Carson Valley late Monday morning, there's a good chance you may have caught a glimpse of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels.

With the 2018 Aviation Roundup days away, the U.S. Navy Blue Angels landed at the Minden-Tahoe Airport this Monday, Oct. 8. In addition, Fat Albert, the C130 transport plane for the Blue Angels, arrives.

The best seats at the Aviation Roundup, held at the Minden-Tahoe Airport Oct. 13-14, 2018, are on-site.

MINDEN — Grocery shoppers can now add the U.S. Navy Blue Angels and the Red Bull Air Force team to their basket while checking out at their neighborhood Raley’s. Tickets are available now through Oct. 14 at the Raley’s Supermarket in Gardnerville.

HopeFest 8, a fundraiser benefitting cancer patients of Northern Nevada, returned for its eighth year Friday night at the Carson Tahoe Cancer center, but before the fundraiser had even began employees of Carson Tahoe raised $30,000 in the few months leading up to the benefit.

This fourth column on the Controller’s Annual Report (CAR) analyzes state taxes. Nevada collected $5.523 billion in taxes in fiscal year 2017, which was 41 percent of total state revenues. As discussed in our previous column, program revenues made up 56 percent, with miscellaneous items at three percent.

The largest tax sources were sales and use taxes ($1.285 billion or 23 percent of general revenues of $5.895 billion), gaming taxes ($897 million or 16 percent) and unemployment assessments ($825 million, or ten percent). All other taxes totaled $2.516 billion, or 43 percent).

CARSON CITY — TravelNevada, also known as Nevada Division of Tourism, and the Nevada Department of Education are offering the Discover Your Nevada essay contest for eighth-graders. The contest, now in its second year, has a prize of a Nevada field trip.

Lodging properties in Carson City saw a nearly 27 percent increase in revenue in 2017 — the highest in the city’s history — according to numbers released Monday by the Carson City Culture and Tourism Authority.

Northern Nevada’s first big event of the season takes place on St. Patrick’s Day this year. The 27th annual Rocky Mountain Oyster Fry returns to historic Virginia City, Nev. on Saturday, March 17 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Each year, more than 7,000 people fill the streets to have some tasty testes prepared by over a dozen cooks all competing to claim the winning title and bragging rights.

CARSON CITY, Nev. – A Nevada Department of Education Committee will select two Nevada high school seniors to participate in the National Youth Science Camp that will include hands-on research projects presented by scientists from across the nation, overnight camping trips into the Monongahela National Forest and a visit to Washington D.C.

The Salvation Army will host a job fair this Friday, Nov. 10 beginning at 9 a.m. at its Carson City offices located at 661 Colorado St.
