As free-market economists, we often reflect on the amazing achievements of the past 300 years, and doing so, grow sanguine about what people can accomplish when free to create, innovate, produce and exchange with each other mostly free of government interference.

As fathers, we teach our children to assume most folks are good and to begin relationships by extending respect, friendship and generosity unless they have clear reasons to do otherwise. As relationships progress, they should respond to others in ways reflecting the accumulated mix of good and bad a person has demonstrated.

A lot of people are asking themselves and the society in which we live this question hours after a fatal mass killing at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon.

I’m a native Oregonian, born and raised just an hour or two north of Roseburg. My parents called this mill city, situated between the North and South branches of the Umpqua River, home for a few years a decade back. I know the area fairly well. One of my favorite places to visit was Wildlife Safari just a few miles down the road in Winston.

A 23-year-old Carson City man was arrested Wednesday on a felony drug charge after he was treated for a heroin overdose and then, later, escaped hospital care and led law officers on a foot chase along North Carson Street, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Dealers, collectors, admirers and amateurs will find fun at the 2015 Carson City Mint Coin Show and Fair. Professionals will buy, sell and trade money and offer expertise in a lecture series during the two-day event Aug. 21-22.

When the framers of the U.S. Constitution created the Bill of Rights, their purpose was to put in writing the limits of government. They were less concerned with what individuals should be allowed to do and more concerned with what the government should or should not be allowed to do.

These rights that we claim as ours aren’t really rights at all, but rather guarantees of what the government is not allowed to do to us.

What is freedom, and what does it mean?

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines freedom as “the absence of necessity, coercion, or constraint in choice or action…the power or condition of acting without compulsion.”

What this means to the average American living in freedom every day is being able to choose what you say or do without government restraint or compulsion to say or do something else.

The summer of 1776 must not have been much different from other summers gone and yet to come: Hot, muggy and miserable for those who had to work out in it. And in 1776 that included most people.

Like any other summer, that particular one 239 years ago was alive with fragrances in full bloom; the sounds of children playing in fields of wild flowers, and splashing about in creeks and ponds where it was cool; young animals frolicking in the fields; men and women toiling in their gardens and on their farms; and the happy songs of birds, crickets and frogs relishing in the summer solstice.

FreedomFest, a 3½-day celebration of liberty and freedom in Las Vegas next month, won’t be free for hardly anyone — and especially bloggers trying to pass themselves off as the working press to avoid paying $500 for a ticket....

Memorial day honors all America's fallen hero's that sacrificed their lives to secure our liberty and freedom. We also honor and remember those that have recently fallen while battling the evil of tyranny. We honor and remember those that fight on the battlefields today, those that protect all of us from certain death and destruction. There are a few who do not remember nor understand what has happened and what is happening even now. Remind them.

Republican presidential hopefuls in Iowa and elsewhere have recently begun sounding a call to arms to Christian conservatives, describing what they say is an urgent threat to religious liberty....

Speaking before a standing-room-only crowd at the Desert Vista Community Center, the Kentucky senator laid out a vision for the country focused on individual freedoms and liberty that has won him a fervent base of support among libertarians while also ......

The California Energy Commission has given the OK to award a $200,000 grant for the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency to create a plug-in Electric Vehicle Readiness Plan for the Lake Tahoe and Truckee region.

The plan will assess potential public and private charging locations. The grant comes as the Tesla Gigafactory takes shape in Nevada with operations to start sometime in 2017.

The Nevada Highway Patrol has identified the passenger who died in a New Year's Day crash on Mt. Rose Highway east of Incline Village in which the driver fled and was later found hiding.

UPDATE: The Nevada Highway Patrol reports the driver of the Isuzu Rodeo involved in a fatal New Year's night vehicle crash has been located. Manuel Mejia Verdusco, 49, of Incline Village, was the driver that had been reported missing in the head-on crash that killed one person on Mt. Rose Highway, according the Nevada Highway Patrol.
Verdusco has multiple injuries to the face, wrist, and ankle and has been taken to the hospital for treatment.

After cooperating with an interview with law enforcement officers Mr. Guzman-Barrios provided important proof that cleared him of any involvement in the crash. NHP is confident that Mr. Guzman-Barrios was not inside the vehicle when it caused the accident on Mt. Rose. The NHP investigators are now looking into other evidence to help locate the driver of the Isuzu Rodeo.

The trouncing Democrats took in November’s elections has opened fissures between their liberal wing, represented by New York Senator Charles Schumer, and their progressive wing, led by President Barack Obama.

Standing uneasily with a foot in each camp is Hillary Clinton. The tiff concerns Obamacare, and 20 years ago, she authored its forerunner, Hillarycare. Having lost both houses of Congress, the party of government (and Hillary) in 2016 may also lose the Presidency if it lacks a compelling message.

Dear President Obama:

After countless failures and broken promises, you've finally started to ask for some answers rather than dictating socialist prescriptions that can never work. You have led your fellow national socialist Democrats to spend money like ghetto addicts with a stolen credit card. Your cabal of socialists will have more than doubled our national debt by the time you leave office and increased long term liabilities beyond a hundred trillion dollars. You have maxed out the national FED credit card.

Thursday night’s 7th Annual Blue Ribbon Awards was the largest yet with over 300 guests in attendance as individuals and businesses were recognized for their exemplary services, products and programs in the South Shore community. Produced by the Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce, also known as TahoeChamber, this prestigious awards program solicited nominations for six categories and eight total awards.

Over 175 nominations were received and 95 of those nominated joined their peers at the Nov. 13 awards ceremony at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe.

In a Nevada Appeal op-ed, Controller-elect Ron Knecht laid out the premise for his ultra-conservative world view as follows:

"For 125 years, we’ve seen the rise of the dysfunctional politics of Progressivism. As it
has accelerated in the last five decades, we’ve had slowing economic growth and reductions in individual liberty, prosperity, opportunity and hope."

Rich Dunn's reply, with a title addressed personally to me, illustrates the deep, irreconcilable mental and psychological divide between the two Parties, and the pavlovian response so typical of Democrats -- attack the messenger, not the message. What makes it especially funny is that the best argument for the Democrats to vote for their candidate in AD40 was that he had been a good... Republican...? It's a free country and you can call yourself whatever you want, just as the people are free to see you for who you are.

And so the people have spoken yesterday.

The Emancipation Proclamation, the historical document freeing slaves in eleven Confederate states in 1863, will be available for limited viewing at the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno, Thursday, Oct. 30 through Sunday, Nov. 2, 2014.

The inaugural Nevada Governor’s Conference on Agriculture will be Nov. 13 at the Atlantis Casino Resort and Spa in Reno, the Nevada Department of Agriculture announced Wednesday.

The U.S. Forest Service, Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, and California Public Utilities Commission have released a final environmental document for the electrical line upgrade project proposed by California Pacific Electric Company, now known as Liberty Utilities, in the North Lake Tahoe area.

It started out as one of those lazy days in Carson City, where it’s not too hot, but it’s not too cold!

It’s just right!

But, when the mercury begins to creep into the triple digits, I am glad I take advantage of the cooler temperatures early in the summer season, because I hate to cook on my patio when it is 100 degrees in the shade!

This is the reason I go straight to my favorite BBQ restaurant for my semi-annual feasting of pork ribs, with corn bread, cole slaw and beans, coupled with my favorite adult libation.

At one time, I use to be proud to call myself a conservative and a Republican. I considered myself to be a “classical conservative”, one who believes in limited government, free markets, individual liberty, a strong national defense, and firmly believed that the role of government should be to provide people the freedom necessary to pursue their own goals, and the placement of the individual in our society above that of the collective wisdom of the government.

The brilliance of classical conservatism is, and still remains, in its simplicity.
