Leisure Hour Club Celebrates Member’s 99th birthday

The October meeting of the Leisure Hour Club included the presence of Julia Bulette, renowned ‘Queen of Tarts,’ who was brutally murdered in 1867. Ms. Bulette is one of several Northern Nevada individuals portrayed by Club member Kim Harris. Pictured are the costumed Ms. Harris along with Carson City resident Betty Berger, who celebrated her 99th birthday a few days before the meeting.

Life of Julia Bulette featured at Leisure Hour Club dinner meeting

Members of the Carson City Leisure Hour Club will learn of the loves and losses of Julia Bulette, renowned resident of Virginia City, at their dinner meeting on Wednesday, October 18.

Bulette’s murder began a manhunt that last over a year and resulted in the arrest, trial, and the April 24, 1869 execution of John Millian.

In what was the largest gathering of people in Nevada up to that time, 3,000 to 4,000 people were present at the hanging.

Carson City Leisure Hour Club recognizes Muscle Powered with donation

On Wednesday, Sept. 20, the Carson City Leisure Hour Club recognized Muscle Powered, an organization committed to enhancing the Carson City environs and the quality of life for its citizens. Accepting the $500 donation was Randy Gaa, Secretary of Muscle Powered.

Leisure Hour Club Glimpses the History of the Children's Home

On Wednesday, Sept. 20, author Bonnie Boice Nishikawa will share her ‘life experiences’ related to growing up in the Nevada State Children’s Home. Located in Carson City, the facility provided a ‘home’ to hundreds of children, including Ms. Nishikawa and her brother and sister, between 1870 and 1992.

Author William 'Bill' Hill Visits Leisure Hour Club

On Wednesday, April 19, the excitement of storytelling will be evident when local author William ‘Bill' Hill shares his craft and stories with members of the Carson City Leisure Hour Club.

William Hill is a naturalized northern Nevadan, a native of Indianapolis, Indiana and a product of many places and stories. Bill has lived in numerous locales, including Prairie Village, KS, Bristol, TN, Dallas and Denton, TX, and in south and north Lake Tahoe, NV. Currently he creates from the foothills of the eastern Sierra.

The Leisure Hour Club announces that due to extenuating circumstances, John and Ben Rupert, the Club's scheduled speakers for their Wednesday, January 18th meeting will NOT be available.

Replacing these speakers is Kim Copel Harris, who will speak on The History of Pony Express. Ms. Harris is a member of the Leisure Hour Club and currently serves as secretary of the National Pony Express Association, Nevada Division.
