Nick Flynn, whose first memoir sparked the major motion picture, “Being Flynn,” international reviews and much press attention, will visit Sierra Nevada College on Sept. 5-6 to kick off the 2014-15 Writers in the Woods literary speaker series and to introduce the college’s Common Read book for the year.

At Sierra Nevada College's new Poetry Center grand opening event March 28-29, 2014, the college will be hosting Poet Laureate of California Juan Felipe Herrera and award-winning poet Jane Hirshfield for public readings and workshops. Reception at 5:30pm in Prim Library on the campus, readings at 6:45pm. Jane Hirshfield and Patricia Smith will hold workshops on Saturday morning. Open Mic on Saturday night.

English professor releases new book of poems, “Of Dirt and Tar”

Readers will discover “deftly-crafted narrative moments that unreel like snippets of cinema” in the poems of June Sylvester Saraceno's new book, entitled “Of Dirt and Tar.”

The second, full-length collection of poetry by Saraceno, the English department chair at Sierra Nevada College, will be released March 1 by Cherry Grove Collections, with accolades on its jacket by some of the nation's top poets.

Sierra Nevada College professors and editors evaluated over 500 submissions to choose the top winners for the 2012 High School Writing Contest, a national competition that produced exceptional stories, poems and creative nonfiction from high school juniors and seniors.
“The level of talent was extraordinary, making it tough for the judges,” said June Saraceno, English Department chair at Sierra Nevada College, a four-year private college in Incline Village, Nev.
