CARSON CITY — Federal and state law requires that the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation redetermine eligibility on a quarterly basis for regular unemployment, pandemic unemployment assistance, pandemic emergency unemployment compensation and state extended benefits.

Despite COVID-19 keeping many from Tahoe beaches this season, somehow it didn’t seem to stop the trash from accumulating, but it also didn’t stop Keep Tahoe Blue volunteers from holding their annual beach cleanup.

According to the League to Save Lake Tahoe’s Communications Manager Chris Joseph, the beach clean up kept things smaller this year to make sure social distancing practices were upheld for the safety of volunteers.

Carson City Health and Human Services is reporting six new positive cases and no additional recoveries of COVID-19 in the Quad-County region on Sunday, July 5, 2020. This brings the total number of cases to 385, with 260 recoveries and seven deaths, 118 cases remain active.

Heading into the July 4 holiday weekend, there’s a number of activities around the Carson City region to celebrate. New safety guidelines for the state of Nevada have been enforced, so please make sure to bring a mask and practice social distancing.

The July 4 holiday weekend at Lake Tahoe will look and feel different this year with basin firework shows canceled and social distancing safety practices required on beaches, campgrounds and along hiking trails. Even with the COVID-19 pandemic, the U.S. Forest Service says it is hopeful the holiday period will be a great opportunity for people to get outside to celebrate Independence Day and all the wonders of Lake Tahoe.

Roger Morrison Laird passed away on August 6, 2019, in the comfort of his home in Carson City, NV surrounded by close family.

Roger was married to his high school sweetheart, Jean (Russell) Laird. They shared 56 years of marriage.

The University of Nevada has announced that students who were set to be put up in the Argenta Dormitory at the Reno campus will now be relocated to a tower at Circus Circus following the July 5 explosion that destroyed a good amount of the building and left a handful of students with minor injuries.

In addition, the resident dining facility on the first floor of Argenta, in which all dormitory students with paid meal plans eat during the year for most meals, was also damaged and will remain closed for the next academic year.

Since last week, when the State Fire Marshal announced preliminary findings regarding the cause of the explosion that damaged Argenta and Nye Halls on July 5, the University has made significant progress in several areas regarding the students affected, making arrangements for the upcoming Fall 2019 semester and planning for the longer-term. The Carson City Board of Supervisors and Redevelopment Authority will be holding their next meeting on July 18, beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Sierra Room of the Community Center, located at 851 E. William Street.

Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam is praising the extraordinary efforts of several Good Samaritans and Sheriff’s Office deputies who worked together to help save the life of a near drowning victim at Thunderbird Beach in Lake Tahoe last Friday.

“A life was on the line and people stepped up,” Sheriff Balaam said.

An early Wednesday morning fire at a Brown Street apartment complex that destroyed four vehicles has been determined to be arson, said Carson City Fire Chief Sean Slamon.

The Carson City Sheriff's Office Investigation Division is asking for the public's help in identifying a man captured in video stealing a package from the door step of a Carson City residence.

The man with slicked back hair worn "man bun" style is responsible for the July 5, 2019 theft of a kayak paddle from a Rocky Bluff Drive residence.

More than 300 volunteers stepped up to clean up Lake Tahoe beaches the day after the July 4 celebration, collecting more than 1,875 pounds of litter that would have otherwise harmed the lake's fragile ecosystem.

Starting on July 3, 2019 at 3:00 pm until the morning of July 5, 2019, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office wants to report that a total of 33 arrests were made during the 4th of July holiday.

Heading into the Independence Day holiday weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region to keep the next three days jam-packed with excitement.

The Fourth of July will be colored with parades, barbecues, carnivals, concerts and plenty of fireworks around Carson City, Carson Valley, Lake Tahoe and Virginia City.

The Nevada State Museum in Carson City will be open with regular hours on the Fourth of July and has a busy month planned with a host of events revolving around the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. The Nevada Railroad Museum is also open July 4 offering a parade of trains, rides and more.

Happy Sunday Carson City! There are plenty of activities and events around the Carson City region to help transition back into the work week. The third and final day of Carson City Off-Road cruises to downtown Carson City with Pro Men and Women Backcountry races starting at 7:30 a.m. Muscle Powered will hold its weekly Sunday bicycle ride at Fremont Elementary School from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
