ThiNK PiNK to turn capitol pink for breast cancer awareness

Carson Tahoe Regional Healthcare is working with Carson City to turn the region pink for breast cancer awareness. This is the 9th year of ThiNK PiNK. We will be lighting up the capital grounds with pink lights to bring awareness to breast cancer.

We want answers regarding our unemployment.

Do you need answers regarding your unemployment benefits or the lack there of? A committee has been formed to work on getting these answers. The people of this state need and deserve answers regarding their unemployment. We have weekly that will begin Wednesday at the Carson City Library beginning at 6:30 p.m.. Community Pledges Support for Military Families and Veterans During Community Covenant Ceremony

The sacrifices of military families and veterans — past, present and future — are recognized and valued in Lyon County.



That message was delivered in many ways during a “Military Community Covenant” signing ceremony last week during Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey’s September meeting.

Community leaders from throughout Lyon County were on hand to sign a “community covenant” that promises Lyon County communities and State and local groups will work together to increase support to the area’s military families and veterans.

Carson City cleanup on Saturday with National Public Lands Day

Conservation-minded residents, students, family and friends are encouraged to join the annual cleanup along the banks of the Carson River, Brunswick Canyon and Prison Hill Recreation Area on Saturday as part of the 17th National Public Lands Day.

Carson City Car Show and Shine to benefit McKenna Mitchell

The community is invited to a benefit Car Show and Shine for McKenna Mitchell, a local 14-year old girl with bone cancer.
The car show is on Friday, Sept. 17 at Kragen-O'Reilly's, 1715 N. Carson Street, in Carson City from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The cost is $10 per car, truck, motorcycle, etc. Employees will be giving awards to some of the best vehicles that show. Latino culture on display at Carson City parade and festival

Formerly known as Salsa Y Salsas, the second Latino Cultural Fest began this morning with a parade down Carson Street and Highway 50 and continued on to Gold Dust West in Carson City. Click here to see more photos. Dozens of horses and cars were featured in the parade, as well as a traveling mariachi band, local politicians and lots of waving.

Oil Change for a Cause

The Oil Change for a Cause is a fundraiser designed to benefit the ESL In-Home Program of Northern Nevada. The ESL In-Home Program is a local community service organization that provides free English lessons at no charge to adults in the community whose native language is not English. It recruits and trains volunteers to teach people English and provides the instructional books and training. The program currently has 115 adults on a waiting list. The funds raised will be used to purchase the books needed to start these adults who are eager to learn to speak, read, and write English.

Nugget Project tidbits

There is an interesting discussion going on over at the Nevada Appeal site concerning the Nugget Project.

The story begins two week ago when Guy Farmer wrote a rather harsh column that slammed the Nugget Project. In response, last week there was a guest column by Michael Douglass criticizing Farmer's take on the subject.

Join the Pooch Plunge for Carson City dog park expansion

Parks 4 Paws, a nonprofit community group to develop designated dogs parks in Carson City, in conjunction with Carson City Parks and Recreation Department and the community pool will sponsor the second annual Pooch Plunge on Saturday, Sept. 18. Last year’s event was very entertaining to watch. It was debatable who had more fun – the dogs or their owners.
The event will held at the Carson Aquatic Facility Outdoor Pool, 841 N Roop St Carson City.

Get the shot: Carson City offers free flu vaccinations on Oct. 16

Saturday, Oct. 16 has been designated Carson City Community Flu Vaccination Day, with vaccines offered to the community at no cost.

It is the seventh year for the program, and by all measures it keeps on growing and has been tremendously successful, health officials said at a press conference this morning.

Last year, there were 8,000 seasonal flu shots given and 21,000 H1N1 shots administered, health officials said.
