Heading into the weeknd, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City area. Lions Club kicks off its annual “White Cane Days” Saturday and Sunday in Carson City to increase awareness of the white cane traffic safety laws, and collect used eyeglasses for distribution to those in need. Local business Wizard of Pawz grooming salon hosts a socially-distanced grand opening on Saturday afternoon, followed by a pool tournament at Bulldog Billiards at 6 p.m. Combined with live music and karaoke, the state capitol will be packed with excitement! The Carson City Library will be hosting a new virtual program called "Girls Who Code," on October 10 beginning at 11 a.m.

Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties meets on the second Thursday of each month. The Coalition’s next public meeting is Thursday, August 13 via Zoom at 9 a.m.

Sena Loyd, candidate for the Nevada State Assembly, District 40, will be the featured speaker at Monday's virtual Democratic luncheon. She became the official Democratic nominee in June's three-way primary, in which she received 47 percent of the vote.

Christine Lenox, Ed.D., has been appointed as director of Student Support Services for the Carson City School District. She will begin her role with the district after it is announced at the next school board meeting Jan. 14, 2020.

CARSON CITY — Forty-five Carson High School seniors have earned the nationally recognized National Career Readiness Certificate. The assessment is designed to measure students’ career readiness as they prepare to enter the workforce by assessing their abilities in three core areas: applied mathematics, locating information and reading for information.

This month, the two hour meeting includes a special one-hour presentation on “Domestic Violence and Coordinated Community Response.”

While our newest season officially arrived March 20th, it seems just now I am starting to believe winter is finally losing its grip and giving way to the kinder, gentler, days of spring. With each day, I see a little more of the renewal of life we have come to associate with this time of year.

I just returned from Orange, Virginia from a conference held at Montpelier, former US President James Madison's estate. I was chosen among applicants to attend this conference because I think our community needs to know the cool educational opportunities in which teachers are embarking. The conference covered “Gender, Sexual Identity, and the Constitution.”

Zig Ziglar said, “I believe success is achieved by ordinary people with extraordinary determination.”

Several Pioneer High School students have demonstrated just how far determination can take you by working hard to graduate early. These Carson City students are all unique individuals, but they share some similar traits that help them succeed. Being ambitious and goal-oriented helps students to persevere.

Soroptimist International of Pinenut Valleys is a new Soroptimist club which will be forming to include the Carson Valley and Smith Valley areas. DAYTON, Nev. — Healthy Communities Coalition’s garden center, floral and gift shop, Community Roots & Shoots, hosts its annual Holiday Open House with music, festive appetizers and lots of community spirit on Thursday, Nov. 29 from 4 to 7 p.m.

National Honor Society President Eleanor Sturm made her opening remarks at the annual NHS induction ceremony Sept. 17 in the CHS Big Gym. Guest Speaker, Greater Nevada Credit Union Vice President Jenny Casselman then addressed the new NHS members and discussed what it means to be a part of such a fantastic organization and the responsibilities of being an NHS member.

On International Overdose Awareness Day, Assistant to the Secretary for Rural Development Anne Hazlett announced Friday that USDA has formalized an innovative agreement in which a nonprofit organization will purchase homes from the Department and convert them to transitional housing for people recovering from opioid misuse.
